Jazz fest 2019- 50 year anniversary

by Elena on 5/9/19New Orleans Fair Grounds - New Orleans

I loved Diana Ross! She sang all of her hits really well, her band was professional, just as proficient and she was over the top with so many outfit changes- I loved it! There were other really good lesser known acts that were enjoyable to watch- esp the actual Jazz ensembles which gave the fest more authenticity. The variety of food was great but were small portions which made it affordable. I went on Sat when it rained in the AM which delayed gates opening. The entire grounds was quite slushy but the sun eventually came out and dried the area making it more manageavle to traverse. I'm happy I made it this year for the 50th anniversary. I do think the cost of entry is overpriced. I had fun and will come again!

    Too much bass

by H. on 5/9/19New Orleans Fair Grounds - New Orleans

seems like certain bands have way too much bass (guitar and drum) drowns out everything else. Can tell if bands bring their own sound people/board.

    Thursday exceeded expectations

by Brian M on 5/9/19New Orleans Fair Grounds - New Orleans

Anders Osborne and Samantha Fish were fantastic. Widespread Panic played a solid old school set. Get lineup throughout the day. The music, food and weather could not have been better and the crowd on Thursday was manageable.

    The underrecognized talent

by Marty on 5/9/19New Orleans Fair Grounds - New Orleans

In an attempt to stuff as many souls into any given space chosen by fest officials, seating rules and archaic barrier movement seemed to change daily, after the Stones debacle ,which out of the past many years I've attended, manifested it's conclusion I realized the 50th would be a crowed affair but it seemed much more so than usual ,was it the 50th ? Or an money grab by the promoter ? Back when you could pull you are pickup truck into the fairgrounds setup your own barbecue grill and crack open your own cooler things were a lot more relaxed but there were no headliner Acts . Now in certain respects the headliner acts are part of the biggest disappointment many of them seem ill-fitted to do the Jazz Fest and more fitted for Las Vegas others who probably demand the large Arena space are beyond their Prime and seem to phone in their entire stage performance while smaller acts like Steve Earle Anders Osborne and Samantha Fish who are definitely closers are presented on smaller stages or in the middle of the day I think the whole tenant of the Jazz Fest needs to be re-examined and possibly some of these larger acts who are undeserving of that kind of attention but demanded by their name should go back home and stay there, many were a sore dissapointment while a few seemed to get it and performed but even at that how do you justify 9 costume changes,no one who came for the music cares what they're wearing or what political views they have unless they put it to music

    Jazzfest Sunday 28th.

by Lonesome Dave. on 5/9/19New Orleans Fair Grounds - New Orleans

This was my first time at Jazzfest. Overall the experience was great. The music was brilliant. It was easy to get a drink and food. I need to offer two criticisms. There were no single page programmes itemizing the days' events. There were no single page maps of the site. We were invited to take photographs with our phones. By the time we got to grips with this, we had missed events. My wife and I are of a certain age. Using our iphones does not come naturally. Secondly we, like a lot of others took picnic chairs. We headed to the stage where Bonnie Raitt was playing only to find spaces were rare. We managed to find a space away to the side of the stage. We remained there for Bonnie's set. What I noticed was, there were a lot seats which had been placed down with no one using them. What people were doing was staking their space and then going and doing other things. Some had spread out large ground sheets using more space than they needed. Not fair. Having said that, the Blues tent, the gospel tent, the international tent were all brilliant.

    50th Anniversary Jazz Festival

by Festival Goer on 5/9/19New Orleans Fair Grounds - New Orleans

As expected - LOTS of people. Music was great! Venue was so-so. A lot of that had to do with the previous day's rain - which created a lot of muddy situations.

Space too small for number of people

by Dawn on 5/8/19New Orleans Fair Grounds - New Orleans

I barely saw any acts due to spending the whole day trying to move through the crowds.

    Quite Pleased

by Pammie on 5/8/19New Orleans Fair Grounds - New Orleans

Bathrooms near jazz tent were fantastic, clean, cool, with a nice lady to keep them that way. Jarekus Singleton gave a captivating performance in the blues tent. Would like to see screens installed in gospel tent because when people stand in front of you can't see performer and no screens to compensate. Screens worked so well in Acura for very crowded Stapleton show. Sound was so good even in open areas. Food great as usual and prices fine. Even found vendor with clothes from Morocco that I loved last year. Weather great and lines not too long. Overall a very enjoyable day.

First time to Jazzfest Great Time

by Char on 5/8/19New Orleans Fair Grounds - New Orleans

Being my first time I did not know what to expect. It was really a lot of fun and better than expected. Got to see Jimmy Buffet and others but my favorite was John Fogerty former lead singer of Credence Clearwater Revival. He was great. Lots of variety of music and culture. Advice to others bring sunscreen lawn chairs or at least a lawn blanket because very little bleacher seating and most of that is reserved no shade in most areas. Mixed crowd but most I would guess as age 40+on last day of fest. I would go again it was a good experience. Take a Lyft or Uber or street car parking was crazy and was $40 so cheaper and easier to take alternate transportation

NO Jazz & Heritage Jazz Fest

by essbee on 5/8/19New Orleans Fair Grounds - New Orleans

For folks coming from other parts of the world, this event is a wonderful introduction to New Orleans, and a wonderful way to taste its musical, culinary, and social traditions in a compact experience. For local residents this event is obscenely expensive, impossibly crowded, and logistically indifferent to the actual enjoyment of the music it champions. This historic festival has become a brilliant economic development gimmick, the importance of which must not be underrated. But for a native music lover who has access to many of these performers, it is an exercise in extravagant spending and creature discomfort. As a local, I would not participate again although I would wish for continued interest and patronage from abroad (meaning beyond Orleans Parish).
