NATALIE MERCHANT IN CONCERT:

In 2014 Natalie Merchant wowed both critics and fans with a self-titled, self-produced album -- her first record of all-new material in more than 12 years and a triumphant reminder that she remains one of the most influential voices in alternative rock. The former 10,000 Maniacs singer still possesses the same charm and magnetism on stage that made her a star in the ‘80s, enchanting audiences with her signature unadorned style and whirling dancing. Whether she’s performing new songs like “The End” backed by a full symphony orchestra or wending her way through a medley of fan favorites accompanied by only piano and acoustic guitar, Merchant’s perfectly preserved voice and unbridled passion always make for an unforgettable concert experience.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Jamestown, NY, Natalie Merchant was encouraged to study music by her mother, who also influenced the budding singer’s development by banning TV from the house. After dropping out of high school and working at a health food store, she started singing for the band Still Life, which eventually became iconic ‘80s alt rock outfit 10,000 Maniacs. Merchant released five critically acclaimed albums with the band -- including the multi platinum-selling LPs “Blind Man’s Zoo (1989) and Our Time in Eden (1992) -- before leaving the band in 1993. She made her official solo debut in 1995 with the album Tigerlily, a critical and commercial success that spawned three hit singles including “Carnival” and “Jealousy”. Merchant has continued to build on the legacy she established with the Maniacs over the course of five more acclaimed solo albums, including a self-titled work released in 2014 – her first album of entirely new material since 2001’s Motherland.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“Saw Natalie with the Jax Symphony and it was incredible! The pure, beautiful voice is still there. Didn't disappoint and saved her oldies for the end with the piano and guitar - very intimate in contrast to playing with the symphony.”

“She certainly didn't disappoint. Her voice is just as amazing live as it is in studio, which didn't surprise me at all. What a beautiful talent. And a full orchestra is always appreciated.”

“The woman rocked the stage with just a pianist and acoustic guitarist (did not need the other 9,999 Maniacs). She doesn't just perform the songs, she embodies them.”

  • Merchant was mesmerizing

    by AnnieM1 on 7/26/10The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Wonderful concept for this new album of songs tying children's poetry to music. Merchant clearly demonstrates, as she does with all her music, her emotional connection to her subject.

  • Sounded amazing

I was not a personal fan of natalie merchant before I went to this concert. I bought the tickets for mothers day but my mom was unable to go. I am actually glad that she wasnt able to go because this was one of the most solid performances ive seen. Natalies voice is so unique and the way the concert was presented was both warm and original.

  • Natalie Merchant was awesome!

    by SaintPaulGal on 7/25/10The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

More performance art than concert, Natalie Merchant's show at the O'Shaunessy Theater was incredible. It was like a poetic theatrical performance set to music, starring Natalie Merchant. Her seven-piece band transformed itself from chamber orchestra to jazz quintet to bluegrass band in order to paint the scenes for Natalie's amazing vocals and choreographed dance. So much more than a concert! If you can see this show, do!

  • Great musicians and storytelling, but no CD for me

    by CariocaGirl on 7/25/10The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 3 out of 5

Great musicians, including the singer, and the storytelling was interesting for me but not for my husband. I liked how Natalie told a little something about each poet and what inspired her to put their poems to music. But I am not running out to buy a CD for me.

  • Excellence beyond reason!

    by DeadOtter on 7/25/10The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

I was prepared for an excellent concert. But Natalie delivered far beyond my reasonably high expectations. Her new work is exquisite. She could have stopped right there and the entire audience would have been well nourished. However, she came back for encores that were filled with awesome renditions of her famous songs. She left the entire audience gleeful. A perfect evening. My wife and I hosted two friends who are fairly difficult to please. Again, Natalie impressed, performed and entertained beyond reason. Bravo!

  • Bye Bye Lullabyes. I like the catalog.

    by RyanHutch on 7/25/10The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 3 out of 5

More than half of the show Natalie did was from her latest album and it featured lullabyes from ultra discreet poets. The show was very artsy and you would have to be a big Natalie Merchant fan to appreciate it. The show was not for a large audience. I went to see her perform her catalog. I started enjoying the show after Encore #1 when she came back on stage after ending the lullabyes. She started in on some of her hits and my heart raced! So I loved half the show and sat frustrated through the other half. Overall I would certainly recommend seeing her but had I known then what I known now I may not have gone...

  • This was the Day!!!

by lpressparis on 7/25/10Music Center at Strathmore - N. BethesdaRating: 5 out of 5

I saw a preview of this show in Los Angeles. I traveled to DC to see this show and it was fantastic. As an English teacher, the poetry is charming and the photographs are breathtaking. To couple these things with Natalie Merchant's voice, ringing to the rafters of this beautiful theater space... too much of a good thing... It is the kind of thing that makes you grateful for this life... which in these tough times is quite an accomplishment. Though I was not one of the people Ms. Merchant personally thanked at the end of the performance... I felt thanked and grateful at the same time.

  • Natalie Merchant and her band is a must see!

    by MTK1519 on 7/25/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

For my first time seeing Natalie perform, and I am a life long live music person, I must say I was thrilled to be at her show. It was truely a happy moment. Her band was amazing, the mix of strings, wood winds, percussions, some brass, the video and audience participation had me captured begining to end. The venue, The Chicago Ttheatre has outstanding acoustics, a perfect location for this show. A truely enjoyable experience, and an amazing evening with my family, and yes Natalie, I was happy!

  • Great Show!!!

    by kertupnorth on 7/25/10The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Natalie Merchant represents a dying breed of musicians who rely on their talent and creativity to drive a show, rather than the megabuck giant stage setups that seem to be more about special effects than about showcasing talent. Natalie is so amazingly present with her audience. She made us feel that we actually mattered to her and not that she was merely going through the motions of another show. She performed for a solid two and a half hours. I've seen a lot of concerts and I would put her right up there with the best I've seen. If you haven't checked out her new double disc of poetry that she put to music...check it out...it's truly wonderful.

  • Natalie Merchant truly amazing

    by Coriemtbiker on 7/25/10The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Natalie Merchant thank you thank you for your generosity in singing such a wonderful double encore show. Your music & show is still going thru my mind. Thank you for coming to St Paul please come again!

  • A Concert Work of Art

    by ArsenalFan17 on 7/25/10The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

No opening act. Crowd was slow to get in, so Natalie just talked with the audience for a few minutes before she started. As from previous concerts she is very personable. Started the show with 16 selected songs from her new album, Leave Your Sleep. Before each song gave a summary of the poems writer and why she picked the poem to put to music. If you are not familiar with the new album it is totally different from any of her previous work. Poems are from juvenile literature. Her and the band do an absolute fantastic job with the works. Her voice was outstanding. After the 16 new songs were played. She came out for 2 additional sets of old favorites, around 8 songs. Again absolutely amazing, her voice is simply the best. Overall one of my favorite concerts b/c I have never seen anything like it, where others poems were put to music by an established artist. If you don't like the new works I would not recommend the concert because 3/4 of it is devoted to Leave Your Sleep. See played slightly over 2.5 hours.

  • great artistic musician

    by Gr8Fr8 on 7/24/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

What an outstanding show. The first set or show as she called it was all from her new album and helped create a authentic musical experience as she explained the poetry, parenting, and history that helped shape the music in which she shared. The 2nd set.show comprised of more older music and was exceptional. Her voice, her interactions with the audience, and her incredible lyrics and music over 2.5 hours left you feeling enlightened and grateful for having been there to share the unique musical experience.

  • Just Natalie!

by NeilPaulC on 7/24/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the best concerts. If you truly love Natalie, you'll love this concert, and you get to see a personal side to her. It's very real and honest and her voice is simply incredible.

  • Natalie, please tour more...

by vundergrnd on 7/24/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Been waiting in anticipation to see Natalie Merchant live now for at least 4-5 years and on a whim saw that tickets were going on sale. My wife and I were ecstatic. Never seized the moment prior years for some reason, may have been because of the venue she was playing at. The expectations were well met and exceeded. The acoustics in the Chicago Theatre are great, so even sitting on the main floor to the left of the stage it still sounded great. Pretty risky from artists perspective of only playing new music for the first hour or more of the concert from her most recent album, but very well received by the audience and excellent delivery on each song, giving a little blurb on each author or poem she was getting ready to sing. In fact I would have been quite content with just this portion of the concert and a couple song encore. But she played a whole another set of her earlier works too. She truly was enjoying herself and interacted with the audience quite well. Fun that her children were watching and one was able to participate as well. I just love listening to her voice...and I want to thank you, thank you

  • Amazing Show!

    by Coriander817 on 7/24/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Natalie clearly put so much effort and love into crafting the new tour, complete with slide show and background on all of the poets she used on the new album! It was great to hear her new creations live as well as an entire hour of classics like Wonder, Carnival, and even some 10,000 Maniacs (Eat for Two). 2.5 hours of live music with very little break in between sets- how can she do it? It was also really fun to watch her interact with the audience and she was so nice to the people requesting photos.

  • Natalie Merchant

by Anonymous on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This was by far one of the best concerts I have been to in a very long time. Natalie has an incredible way of representing her spirit, her artistry, her passion, her love for her country's literary history, and most of all her God-given, melodious voice. She has the ability to reach in and encourage your spirit to soar in the freedom it was designed to soar. The musicians were phenomenal, especially Gabe.

  • It was me dancing to "The Dancing Bear"

    by Tessa22 on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

WOW. This was amazing. My mom turned me on to Natalie Merchant when I was about 5 years old and in return I bought her a ticket and yes, we were the "Mother Daughter?" group that she asked about :) I fell in love with her work in 10,000 Maniacs and that music still reminds me of my youth, although this music has gathered more respect and adoration to me as time goes on. I loved her solo work, Tigerlily & Ophelia. I have to admit, I was not well versed in her new album. I had some idea that they were nursery rhyme related but didn't know the whole background. I actually kind of wanted to go to this show and not know what to expect. However, I looked at prior set lists the night before to see what Chicago was in for and loved what I saw. New & OLD. But not just old as in solo, but bringing back stuff from the 10,000 Maniacs days. As she approached the stage, she seemed so strong. As you watched her perform, she confirmed that. She is exactly that, a strong woman with so much to sing about and tell about. She more so gave a presentation. Her new album is composed of poems from various poets, over many decades, from different areas of the world. As she went into each song, she used a powerpoint to deliver pictures while she shared information about each one. It was such a unique concert. What is even more unique is the fact that she was able to turn old poems into new songs that can deliver with such flair and technique. I loved that she talked to the crowd SO much. I love it when an artists connects with the people who come to see them. It makes it much more personal and enjoyable. I was lucky enough to snag the one and only set list for the show...The first 15 songs were from her new album. Part 1: Crying My Little One, Sleepy Giant, Man In The Wilderness, King of China, Sailor O Sailor, Spring & Fall, Maggie & Milly & Maggie & Mae, Peppery Man, Janitor's Boy, Bleezer's Ice Cream, Isabel, Calico Pie, If No One Ever Marries Me, The Dancing Bear, Equestrienne So for "The Dancing Bear" I really wanted to dance in the aisle because I love that song and how funky the instruments are. I had seats in the back and people back there were like "rush the stage!" so I went up right by the staged and just danced my heart out. It was Natalie Merchant. I don't know if I'll get to see her live, so of course I'm going to enjoy myself. This is when I ended up snagging a spot right up front. At the end of this set when people started clearing out, I ran back to get my mom to come and sit up front with me. This is an important factor... Okay that was all in order. For the second half, the crowd got a little goofy. People were calling out requests and it was so funny with shout outs like "Freebird!", "Smoke On The Water", "Dust In The wind!!" Her guitarists starts playing 'Dust In the Wind' and she went with it for awhile, but they didn't match on a key so they continued to joke with the crowd. She didn't really stick to the set list order and they just kind of went with it. She started with.. Part 2: Wonder, River, The Worst Thing, Break Your Heart, Carnival, The Letter, and I honestly forgot the order of the last songs, but she ended with Kind and Generous. WOW. HOW amazing. She spotted me numerous times (I was wearing her merchandise--which has a great design) and at the end for 'Kind & Generous" My mom and I were dancing and she looked down at us and asked "Mother Daughter?" ha ha. That was awesome. Overall it was an AMAZING show. The best concert I've ever been to. A moment that really stood out to me and I don't know why is her taking her hair down about 6 songs into the act. As I said, she came out and appeared VERY strong and poised. I guess it was her loosening up. But it stood out to me. The only downside of this entire experience would be the surplus of people getting up and down for liquor. That's the problem with shows today (as I'm only 22 I suppose I know nothing about shows in the 60's-70's-80's) is the fact that liquor is sold. Flasks were fine--there was enough to getcha by. Now people just go too overboard and can sometimes ruin the experience for others. I really wish I held a ticket to other shows. Hopefully one day she will be back!

  • Natalie loves to perform

by VinceH on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The last time I saw Natalie Merchant in concert was about 25 years ago in a small bar in Ithaca, NY when she was with 10,000 Maniacs. It struck me then that she was very passionate about the music and really enjoyed what she was doing - an uninhibited display of joy. I was pleased that she still radiates the same energy and passion as she did when she was a teenager. The ensemble that she had with her were outstanding and they all worked together very well.
