NATALIE MERCHANT IN CONCERT:

In 2014 Natalie Merchant wowed both critics and fans with a self-titled, self-produced album -- her first record of all-new material in more than 12 years and a triumphant reminder that she remains one of the most influential voices in alternative rock. The former 10,000 Maniacs singer still possesses the same charm and magnetism on stage that made her a star in the ‘80s, enchanting audiences with her signature unadorned style and whirling dancing. Whether she’s performing new songs like “The End” backed by a full symphony orchestra or wending her way through a medley of fan favorites accompanied by only piano and acoustic guitar, Merchant’s perfectly preserved voice and unbridled passion always make for an unforgettable concert experience.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Jamestown, NY, Natalie Merchant was encouraged to study music by her mother, who also influenced the budding singer’s development by banning TV from the house. After dropping out of high school and working at a health food store, she started singing for the band Still Life, which eventually became iconic ‘80s alt rock outfit 10,000 Maniacs. Merchant released five critically acclaimed albums with the band -- including the multi platinum-selling LPs “Blind Man’s Zoo (1989) and Our Time in Eden (1992) -- before leaving the band in 1993. She made her official solo debut in 1995 with the album Tigerlily, a critical and commercial success that spawned three hit singles including “Carnival” and “Jealousy”. Merchant has continued to build on the legacy she established with the Maniacs over the course of five more acclaimed solo albums, including a self-titled work released in 2014 – her first album of entirely new material since 2001’s Motherland.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“Saw Natalie with the Jax Symphony and it was incredible! The pure, beautiful voice is still there. Didn't disappoint and saved her oldies for the end with the piano and guitar - very intimate in contrast to playing with the symphony.”

“She certainly didn't disappoint. Her voice is just as amazing live as it is in studio, which didn't surprise me at all. What a beautiful talent. And a full orchestra is always appreciated.”

“The woman rocked the stage with just a pianist and acoustic guitarist (did not need the other 9,999 Maniacs). She doesn't just perform the songs, she embodies them.”

  • Natalie didn't perform any of her hit songs

by Anonymous on 7/28/10Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 2 out of 5

Natalie's voice is amazing but the show seemed very self indulgent. Her set list consisted of only all the poems off her new album. I get that a musician wants to showcase their new stuff, but can't you mix it up a little? She finally branched out during the encore, but you had to be a serious hard core fan to recognize any of the heavy songs she sang. At least one hit song that casual fans would recognize would have been nice.

  • Natalie Merchant rocks the house!

by mooj on 7/28/10Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 4 out of 5

I went as a gift to my partner who is a big NM fan. I had bought her latest folkie album prior and listened to it. This is a good idea since the first 90 minutes is ALL material from this album which represents her original tunes put to poems by, about or for children. The music ranges from english ballad to cajun to klezmer. The CD is way produced, but on stage her band is just 7 folks w/cello, bass, guitar, violin and a wind player. Vocals are fabbo. She was on stage for a solid 2 plus hours. The last 30 to 40 minutes were all her old stuff. Lovely stage presence. I thought the start of the show was a bit slow and her stage moves (english folk dancing?) made me giggle. But by the end she had my respect for the range of music she performed really well.

  • Natalie was so kind and generous

  • Natalie Merchant Feels Her Music

    by Shejean on 7/27/10The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

For over two hours we were enchanted by Natalie Merchant's uniquely beautiful voice. The incredible expression of the whimsical poetry through music was enchanting. It was delightful to hear about the poets and see their pictures displayed during the songs. You came away really feeling the creative sparks - of the poets, the musicians and the singer! We loved the encores where we heard so many favorites songs from previous albums. We left the concert fulfilled and inspired and in awe of all creativity! Amazing!

  • Natalie Merchant was beyond expectations!

Going to see Natalie Merchant erform at the Chicago Theatre was truely a treat for anyone who has followed her music. For those people not familiar with music, but were lucky to attend her performance on July 22, they were introduced to a unique talent. She is a true professional who boundless spirit that radiants warm and light.

  • Natalie Merchant delivered

    by Crankie on 7/26/10The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

I didn't know what to expect since I wasn't very familiar with her newest album but it was fabulous. The O'Shaughnessy sounded incredible - a perfect venue. Natalie editorialized between each song with some bio and a slide show of each writer on this unusual collection. She is so honest and expresses herself with movement that adds interest to the more mellow tunes. She gave a triple encore of many oldies that we all were hoping to hear. Definitely a night well spent!

  • Natalie was AMAZING!

    by letty13 on 7/26/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I've been listening to Natalie Merchant for a very long time now. There is no doubt at all that she's got mad vocals. But I had never had the honor to attend any of her concerts until now. All I can say is that she left me speechless. I am an avid concert goer but I can honestly say that I've never been so moved. She's a very sweet, funny, and what seems like- humble artist. I was deeply moved by the intimacy of the concert. If you're a Natalie Merchant fan I recommend that you don't miss this concert. I know I would attend again if I were given the chance. AMAZING!!

Did not enjoy the show. Would have loved to hear more of her older stuff. We aren't parents so could not relate to her "project".

  • Natalie + Chicago Theatre = Great Concert

    by chimike0324 on 7/26/10Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I admire an artist who thinks out of the box as far as their concerts go. I loved hearing the new poems/songs by Natalie. Not all were my cup of tea, but she kept it very entertaining by interacting with the crowd. The second act was fabulous. Natalie sang a few classics (Carnival, Cowboy Romance, Wonder, Kind and Generous) and seemed to touch all of her previous albums.

  • HOw can you go wrong?

Natalie Merchant was spot on at O'Shaughness and the venue really showcased her powerful voice. Her new album was conceptually very interesting and the music excellent. Her crowd-pleasing encore proved super.

Great show! Very intimate and entertaining. I have always loved her music. Her new stuff was very good, and loved when she brought out the older tracks.

  • What were you expecting?

    by Kizer1 on 7/26/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

If you were expecting "The Best of Natalie Merchant", then you were most likely disappointed. I went to the show not knowing what to expect other than a great singing voice on display. My wife expected the best of. What we got was an amazing show that did include some best of songs, but prominently featured the newest album Leave Your Sleep. Leave Your Sleep is a collection of late 19th and early 20th century poems set to music that was written specifically for each poem. This collection was compiled by Ms. Merchant for her first (only?) child as a way to help her explain some of this crazy world we live in. I think it's fantastic that some of this literature has a chance to live again.

  • Natalie was a bit self indulgent

by PVBS on 7/26/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Her music selection was forgettable, she played a few old songs which made up for her new material. I will have to say that she has an extremely comforting voice When I left the show I felt "relaxed'.

  • brought me to tears

    by JRich10182 on 7/26/10The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Natalie was great. Love her music. She sounds the best live. She brought me to tears more than once. Unforgetable experience.

  • Brutal

    by ccaw on 7/26/10The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 1 out of 5

I had not seen Natalie Merchant since 1990 when she & the Maniacs palyed in Chicago, & put on one of the best concerts I have ever witnessed. Sadly, I can say I won't see her for another 20 years after that performance on 7/24. She is way to self-absorbed, acting like she is the only mother who thinks their kid is a genius. What a waste of talent, being that she may be the greatest female vocalist of all time.

  • Natalie was wonderful as always

    by Nikki11876 on 7/26/10The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Her concert was amazing as always. We loved she did her new CD but also songs from previous CDS.

  • Natalie Merchant brought tears to my eyes

    by sherri71 on 7/26/10The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Loved, loved, loved Natalie's show. Evocative material for her new cd. Graciously sang her heart out with double encores for the appreciative audience. I have been waiting a long time for her to put on a concert in Mpls/St Paul. She more than exceded my expectations.

  • by Anonymous on 7/26/10The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

She is always incredible. So glad i went! Love the new album and thrilled she played old songs too.
