    My Brother Marvin was Awesome!

by Purplelady5085 on 5/28/13Terrace Theater - Long Beach Convention Center and Entertainment - Long Beach

This was a beautiful yet sad story about addiction and the distress it can place on family & friends. Lynn Whitfield & the entire cast's performance were pivotal to its success. I loved Marvin Gaye, now I have a better understanding of what happened the day of his death. Zeola Gayle did a great job in telling the story that was possibly a difficult task. Great play. Hopefully, she will be able to redo the play after she attains the rights to use Marvin's music. I will see it Again! Great job Clifton Powell and the wonderful producer who believed in the storyline.

Great Story Telling...An Absolute Fabulous Play!

by Divagirle on 5/28/13Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Hats off to Zeola Gaye and the cast of this play. Although Zeola was unable to use any of her brother's music/songs in the play, it was still a grand hit! When something as tragic happens as in the case of Marvin Gaye, his fans want to know what happened because they loved him and I believe people were genuinely concerned. Not just with Marvin Gaye, but his familiy as well. Zeola could not have done a better job telling her story of her family's disfunction, and I applaud her for doing so. Everyone has disfunction in their family and everyone deals with it in their own way. Some think it's not okay to talk abou it, but once you put it out there, who knows how it could help someone whose also struggling to deal with their own family's disfunction. A very emotional, touching, funny, talented and close-to-home play.

EXCELLENT! I only wish that they were able to pay and sing Marvin's music. The story was bittersweet.

This play was not what I expected. It was OK, but I would not recommend it to someone else.

    What's Going On?

by peaches366 on 5/27/13Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

My Brother Marvin, the play was very revealing and retro. It showed how a dysfunctional family can create extraordinary gifted and talented people as well as destroy them. It will make you laugh, cry and say Hmmm, I know someone just like Marvin Gaye. He is not heavy, he is just my BROTHER!

    My Brother Marvin

by Moduppea on 5/27/13Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

This was a rip off and false advertisement. Once you are on the theater one of the actors comes out and says that they don't have the rights to sing Marvin's songs. They should be disclosed with the advertisement. The advertise says the man and his music giving the impression that you would hear his hits. I probably wouldn't have bought a ticket for the event. Once I was at the theater there was nothing I could do because the money was spent!!

    Sister's Personal perspective

by Volunteria on 5/27/13Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I understand the sister's perspective is not "all inclusive" of Marvin Gaye's life. He had wives and children that would have provided perhaps more of a complete sense of who he was also. Unfortunately, not one of the songs in the play is a Marvin Gaye hit. His very name evokes recognizable music. The play could be about anyone because there was no signature music to punctuate the periods of his life. Which was a shame. I assume it had to do with copyright and Motown probably owning the music. If that were the case, it should have strictly been a drama. Without songs Marvin Gaye made famous, the event was sorely lacking although the singers were good..

It was great once one read the program & realized the play wasn't about Marvin's music but his mental state, dysfunctional family & enablers of his ultimate demise. There was great fill-in music of his fellow stars of his time of fame. I think most of the crowd was disappointed because they bought tickets thinking they were going to hear Marvin's music. They wouldn 't havecome if they had known Zeola couldn't purchase his music catalog. I would also have thought twice about buying a ticket too. Still very good, both the acting, singing and band.

Absolutely amazing. Enjoyed every minute of it. The music and costumes were phenomenal. The only gripe i have is the two ladies sitting in front of me had the biggest hair and i struggled to see.

    "My Brother Marvin" was horrible

by disgusted23 on 5/26/13Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

A friend ask me, how was the play?, I say, don't waste your time or money. Friend #2 states, "well, there was no Marvin Gaye music", my friend who asked if she should go responded, "then what is the point?', my sentiments exactly. It was a group of events put together with no soulful Marvin Gaye songs. Horrible!!!!!

    What's goin' on?

by Missedthemusic on 5/26/13Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

This play was more than disappointing; it was embarrassing. If I hadn't been surrounded with the beauty of the Pantages, I would have sworn I was in a high school auditorium. Sadly, the storyline focused on events that would have best been left behind closed doors. If the script was written to honor Marvin Gaye, it missed the mark by a mile! The fact that not a note of Marvin's music was included in the score added to the betrayal of the audience and the man we loved and admired. What was the point?

    Mixed feelings!

by OuterDrive on 5/26/13Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I thought the play was great but was sadden that Margin Gaye's hits were not played, although it was explained in the beginning it wasn't the same, so I was sort of disappointed by the choice of music...The cast was awesome.
