  • Excellent Blend of Bands and Great Park Setting

by AuLu on 9/25/13PIEDMONT PARK - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Piedmont Park is a great location in Midtown Atlanta with a beautiful outdoor setting. It was easy to find lodging nearby, although I'd recommend staying off Peachtree since the hotels raise their prices by $200 or more/night during the festival weekend and it was very easy to stay Downtown and take a short Marta commute, for a nicer hotel at a much lower price. Plenty of eateries, bars, pubs, and shops are within walking distance and the Atlanta police force made it easy by blocking off sections of streets surrounding park exits and providing assistance with cab service and street crossings with diverted traffic flow. That said, you don't want to be anywhere close to the festival in a car because they effectively put pedestrians first. The festival offers free full-sized water bottles at the first aid tent and there was plenty of good food options in the form of local food trucks. Good beer/liquor selection too, but at the expected steep prices of concerts/large events. Even though it rained most of Saturday, the festival didn't miss a beat since the acts played right on in good spirits, and despite the mud the park was still accommodating.

  • Great Event - Poor Organization

    by 10010010100 on 9/25/13PIEDMONT PARK - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

Thanks to the city of Atlanta for allowing such a large-scaled and great event in the beautiful Piedmont Park. Great lineup and location. That said, the Saturday show was made pretty lousy due to poor execution by event management. The rain on Saturday was absolutely expected by 100,000 concert-goers for several days in advance, yet somehow the event-planners (LiveNation) didn't get this same message and did nothing to prepare for this. People were standing in line in the pouring rain for 2+ hours on the overflowing streets due to the ticket-scanners "receiving poor satellite response due to the clouds." So much for seeing any of Weezer. There was no line management, and several people were crawling through gaps in the fences. They weren't even scanning tickets by the time I got in, so there was no telling how many people attended this event for free. That said, these things happen at large music festivals from time-to-time, and once you finally get in you can at least enjoy the artists, right? Except apparently the main stage was severely under-powered, so half the audience could not hear the headliners, especially RHCP on saturday night. People were literally chanting "turn it up" between songs, and the music was so quiet in fact that we could here music from the concession stands competing with the main stage. NO excuses for that.

  • Queens of the Stone Age were awesome!

by Slingshotjack on 9/25/13PIEDMONT PARK - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

The venue is to small for the amount of people. There are never enough toilets and the food trucks impede the flow of the crowd. They need to have more entrances/ exits because the wait to get in cost me 2 bands I wanted to see. 3 stages are far to many because you are forced to choose between stages and your favorite bands.

  • So glad they brought it back!

by MainMane on 9/25/13PIEDMONT PARK - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

This was probably the best Music Midtown yet! The adding of the third stage and its location made it a little difficult seeing all of the bands. Also, I didn't like that all of the bands performances overlapped each other. I wasn't able to see a full set until the very end.i don't know what the answer to that problem would be, unless a third day was added! I love going to Music Midtown, though and I look forward to it every year! I plan to go next year!

Overall I truly did enjoy the event. Phoenix was awesome, The Black lips were great, Imagine Dragons were beyond, even the rap acts (2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar) were good. One of the bands that drew me to splurge on tickets was Weezer (love), so I got to the park about 45 minutes before they went on.. I listened to their entire set from outside the park only to be let without having my ticket scanned or bag checked 15 minutes after they finished. If you're going to make me miss one of my favorite bands, at least scan my damn tickets.

First day was great. Stayed away Saturday due to the rain.

entire day….was a muddy mess. Was not worth being soaked & muddy in the rain all day. Believe in future if rain (this much anyway) is called for, it’d be best to have a ‘rain-check’ day. Won’t spend this money again in the future.

  • Mud, Rain, and Beer...FANTASTIC

    by MrGoodbar92 on 9/25/13PIEDMONT PARK - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Music Midtown was some of the most fun I've ever had in my life. Good music, good people, and good times made for an unforgettable weekend. Seeing Phoenix rock out to Entertainment, being in the front row for Journey, jumping around to Capital Cities' Safe and Sound, and watching Flea handstand across the stage after smashing out some funky beats culminated in a musical orgasm of sound, lights, and bass notes. There were also plenty of interesting and downright quirky people to talk to. I met several really cool people- some actors, a guy who instructed me how to purchase drugs, and even this hilarious guy that hung out with us for most of the day. The rain was no deterrent to my fun either. I was soaked from 1 to 8 Saturday, covered in mud, and covered in beer, and it was a blast.

This would have gotten 5 stars if there weren't so many good performers playing at the same time - for instance Jane's Addiction was playing at the same time as Cake so I had to choose Jane's Addiction (who was awesome). Then I found myself torn between trying to see Kendrick Lamar as well as Queens of the Stone Age before rushing over to see the Chili Peppers. Earlier in the day, there was a 3-hour break in between Weezer and Imagine Dragons so that would have been a good time to show Kendrick Lamar or Queens of the Stone Age. Oh well, even though it was a muddy Saturday evening/night, the show as a whole was awesome...definitely a top-5 concert of all time. Looking forward to next year!

  • Awesome music, horrible planning

    by MissMel98765 on 9/25/13PIEDMONT PARK - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

This event would have been a real knockout if the event planners actually cared about the attendees and not just the bands. Between the hourlong entry line, vendors running out of food and yelling at patrons, the lack of restroom facilities, and general confusion among staff, the experience is not one I'd want to repeat.

  • by Anonymous on 9/25/13PIEDMONT PARK - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

The music and venue were excellent. Jus tlike last year, planning/logistics need work. Lines to get in were over an hour long. Event planners should anticipated which acts would draw big crowds as it seemed lots of people on Sat got there to see Weezer first causing long lines and causing many people to miss the show entirely. Lines to the bathrooms were slightly shorter than last year but still too long. More restrooms would be a good idea as well as raies or ropes desinating waiting areas for each restroom as many people broke line, and it was often hard to tell who was in each line. Ponchos should have been sold inside of the event. As it rained all day, this was extremely poor planning.

We waited 45 minutes just to get in the gate. I've never waited that long just to get in to an event before. The lines to porta potties were an epic fail. Not enough room for the crowds to stand and everyone cutting in line. I think my friend waited 45 minutes. We've been to plenty of outdoor music concerts with larger crowds and they've never had this type of lines.

  • by Anonymous on 9/25/13PIEDMONT PARK - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Despite the rain it was a great venue! Good stages and lighting effects. Good variety of bands. Loved all the venders. I wish there was a free water fill station like most of the festivals.

  • r wach

by rwach on 9/25/13PIEDMONT PARK - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

The weather was perfect and we found that sitting on the hill you could see both screens and hear the bands without being in the crowd. Atmosphere was fun and energetic

  • Just short of being best fest ever!

by MajesticLodge on 9/25/13PIEDMONT PARK - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Despite the torrential rain on day two of the festival, I had a fantastic time. Great lineup, great food and beer vendors, and the flow of the park was easy to navigate. If I'd change anything, it'd to add more portoilets. The lines were ridiculous even before the rain died down and the crowd doubled. Perhaps the festival can't control food and beer prices, but $13 for a 24 oz. draft beer is ridiculous. Eight bucks for a 16 oz. pint is pretty crazy, too, but that didn't stop me and a LOT of people from paying. Still… with 100,000 fans in attendance, I think the beer companies can afford to be less greedy. Perhaps consider more entrances next year. I got to the park at noon Saturday thinking I had plenty of time to get in to see Mona's set at 12:45. Not so much. I finally made it in around 1:10 and caught maybe the last two songs by the time I reached their stage. The exit on Friday night was incredibly bottle-necked. That's gotta be a fire hazard. Overall, though, it was a great music fest. A couple of tweaks could help Music Midtown be the best fest ever.

I thought the whole experience was fun. It was a first music festival for my daughter and despite the rain we had a good time.

  • NOT for all ages

by MewsicRox on 9/25/13PIEDMONT PARK - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

I enjoyed the music, and for the most part, the atmosphere. It was a well-organized event, but with laughable security. Everyone had to put out their cigarettes before entering the event, but no one batted an eye when anyone lit up, or rolled up then lit up, once inside. Whatever. But why the feigned concern for smoking upon entrance. Then, when a woman mounted someone's shoulders then removed her bikini top during the Cake concert, for multiple songs, the whole evening took a nosedive for me. If I wanted to go to a strip club with my husband, I would. But that is not an environment I would ever choose for entertainment. It saddens me to see people throw away their self-respect out of desperation for a little attention. She 'stole the show,' at least in terms of people's attention who were within sight of her. I kept hearing guys around me saying, "Look at that whore." Meanwhile, there was a great concert going on that had become difficult to focus on. With children present. And security guards. What on earth???

  • Rudeness

by JollyJenn on 9/25/13PIEDMONT PARK - AtlantaRating: 2 out of 5

This was the first year I had ever gone to Music at Midtown. I felt that although it was fun my experience was ruined by rudeness. First of all, 3 stages is too many. There was too much competing music and it was hard to listen to the bands you came to see due to overflow music from the third stage. Also, I could not believe that Queens of the Stone Age went over their allotted time and continued to play as the Red Hot Chili Peppers started their set. I was so angry that a band would not manage their time better and finish on time. It was just rude! Also, I had camped out by the handicap area by the stone wall since 5pm and was seated comfortably on the wall ledge listening to music and minding my business. Then an extremely rude employee/security person cleared about everyone who was standing within 4 feet of the wall and everyone on the wall and made us walk away (while Red Hot Chili Peppers were playing)!! So I lost my perfect seat that I had camped out in for 4 hours to see the band I really wanted to see and was pushed back behind a mob of people that I was too short to see over. I understand that they needed a path to the handicap area but they should have roped it off earlier or found a different access point. Moving people who had been seated there all evening in the middle of the headliner was unforgiveable! It ruined my experience since I could no longer see the Red Hot Chili Peppers which is the main reason I went.

  • NOT a music festival

by PanicDude on 9/25/13PIEDMONT PARK - AtlantaRating: 2 out of 5

Music Midtown was sadly disappointing. I've been to festivals where it's down poured nearly the entire time and still, Midtown proved far worse than any "festival" I've been too. The fans were terribly obnoxious, the lines were grossly long, especially the bathroom, and the line-up was not even that impressive. Thankfully the Peppers closing out the show restored my faith in the event, however without that I'm sure I would have left early. The two-day concert splurge was not much more than a trendy, clustered excuse for douchey, fist-pumping Georgia Tech students to flaunt their "hip" taste in otherwise very mainstream music, and gives real music festivals a bad rep.

  • Music was good but organization was poor!

by Anonymous on 9/25/13PIEDMONT PARK - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

The music line up was great. I was very disappointed to have to wait in line for 2 hours on Saturday to get in. We missed 3 bands we wanted to see. Security had no control over the crowd. I watched (and cheered on) people in line who took down 2 fences & stormed into the festival without showing tickets. Not that it mattered... after waiting in line 2 hours, security did not even scan my ticket... only looked at it to see if the date was right. I could have purchased one ticket & made copies for my 100 closest friends. On the plus side, the food trucks were good and I didn't have to wait in line for beer.
