The Story of Woodstock and the '60s at The Museum at Bethel Woods

The Museum at Bethel Woods offers one of the country's most impressive exhibits devoted to the 1960s. The award-winning The Story of Woodstock and the '60s follows significant events throughout the tumultuous decade, leading up to the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair, which was held on the spot where the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts now stands. Located in the 6,728-square-foot Main Exhibit Gallery, this permanent exhibit is a vivid feast for the eyes, including 5 interactive productions, 20 films, 164 artifacts and over 300 photographic murals. Check out the iconic fashion, listen to the pioneering music and watch original, never-before-released footage from the festival. Before you visit, don't forget to grab your grooviest garb.

About The Museum at Bethel Woods

Take a technicolor trip back to the 1960s at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the site of the storied Woodstock Festival. Located roughly 100 miles northwest of New York City, the small town of Bethel became a legendary music landmark practically overnight when some 450,000 people descended on Max Yasgur's dairy farm during a rainy four-day stretch in mid-August 1969. Today, The Museum at Bethel Woods has become one of the area's top attractions for music and history buffs. Along with the main multimedia exhibit called The Story of Woodstock and the '60s, the Museum features annually rotating special exhibits — both inside the center and throughout the historic site — as the collection of '60s artifacts continues to grow. Hear stories about the 32 groups that performed at Woodstock, catch Jimi Hendrix's electrifying closing performance and head outside to make your way around the Bindy Bazaar Trails, which were at the center of the festival. The museum also offers an augmented reality tour, titled Meet Me at Woodstock, narrated by Nick and Bobbi Ercoline, the couple seen embracing on the iconic cover shot of the Woodstock album. The tour takes you straight to the muddy field with concert recordings and stories from those who experienced the magic and madness of the one and only Woodstock.

    The magic still lingers!

by G. b. on 7/23/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

This my first visit to the museum and the venue and I loved every min of it. I'm 37 so I never got the opportunity to be at Woodstock. So this is as close as I can get to the original magic. A show at bethal woods. I loved how they Incorporated the going ons of the country at that time. Really dug deep on where Woodstock came from. I learned alot of stuff I didn't know. Looking at the stuff just trying to imagine being there was overwhelming and un Imaginable. But I tried. I would 100% go back to visit again. They deff were milking money out of the name in the gift shop. But ya know what, I probably would've too. Highly recommended

5 Star First Ever Trip to Bethel Woods

by Mike S on 7/17/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

My two daughters and I made our first ever trip to Bethel Woods-it could not have gone any better. Sacred, serene surroundings; an awesome gift shop, and a really cool museum that takes you back to a once-in-a-lifetime era. We particularly enjoyed the 21 minute movie in the Theatre-set the stage for our continued journey into the museum. A phenomenal day was capped off by the Chicago/Brian Wilson show that evening. A special memory we will always cherish. See you next summer!!!

by TDG on 7/15/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

The museum was beyond expectations. Much larger and inclusive that I would have imagined. The Intuitive computer presentations were terrific and the holographic walk along was so well done! Never expected that! Well worth a visit.

From the past into the future

by Artsy C on 7/12/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

Lots of great info, background, music, art gives you a real feel for the Woodstock Festival. Setting is unbeatable. I wish there was a bit more about the generational impact on the future after Wdstk. We can all use a reminder that the seeds planted at the festival are still alive and peace and love are worthy attributes to this day. May the Woodstock nation live long and prosper 🖖

    Awesome!

by Concert Addict on 7/11/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

It was really neat to see what Woodstock 69 was like. Everyone worked together to make sure everyone was taken care of. It was interesting to have a reminder of what was happening in US history during the 60's too. Lots was going on and that helped lead to the togetherness during Woodstock. The displays were great and I loved the VW bus!

    Blown Away

by Kitty on 7/7/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

This was an amazing experience. Seeing the actual hallowed grounds where this monumental festival took place was magical. I stepped back to 1969 and could just imagine it right there where I was standing in what is now a beautifully manicured sloped hillside. The audio tour was so helpful in walking me through it. The indoor museum was impeccable taking me on a tour of the 1960’s and everything going on in not the U.S. but around the world that led to Woodstock music festival in 1969. I learned so much. Having said all of that, one of the biggest hi-lights was meeting “Duke”. We learned so much from him. Such a great guy! A real pioneer and a wealth of information. I loved every minute of it. H

    very cool

by leslop on 7/5/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

if you can relate to Woodstock in '69 this is the place for you. I never made it to Woodstock but I was a counselor with a day off.. My friend and I were on the road walking with lots of other people. We realized if we made it there - we would never get back. So we turned around and "hitched" back to camp. This museum refltects the tone and authenticity of Woodstock. So much information. it took us back to that time. Beautiffuly done

took the grandkids ages 9thru 15. we had a wonderful time. they had researched a little bit about Woodstock before our visit. the display of artwork combined with the videos and history of the times was enjoyed by all . they especially enjoyed the film at the end. we then visited the monument and field site of the original Woodstock. i can honestly say it was a great experience , my second time there. it was a history lesson combined with music , art and political movements of the time.
