The Story of Woodstock and the '60s at The Museum at Bethel Woods

The Museum at Bethel Woods offers one of the country's most impressive exhibits devoted to the 1960s. The award-winning The Story of Woodstock and the '60s follows significant events throughout the tumultuous decade, leading up to the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair, which was held on the spot where the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts now stands. Located in the 6,728-square-foot Main Exhibit Gallery, this permanent exhibit is a vivid feast for the eyes, including 5 interactive productions, 20 films, 164 artifacts and over 300 photographic murals. Check out the iconic fashion, listen to the pioneering music and watch original, never-before-released footage from the festival. Before you visit, don't forget to grab your grooviest garb.

About The Museum at Bethel Woods

Take a technicolor trip back to the 1960s at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the site of the storied Woodstock Festival. Located roughly 100 miles northwest of New York City, the small town of Bethel became a legendary music landmark practically overnight when some 450,000 people descended on Max Yasgur's dairy farm during a rainy four-day stretch in mid-August 1969. Today, The Museum at Bethel Woods has become one of the area's top attractions for music and history buffs. Along with the main multimedia exhibit called The Story of Woodstock and the '60s, the Museum features annually rotating special exhibits — both inside the center and throughout the historic site — as the collection of '60s artifacts continues to grow. Hear stories about the 32 groups that performed at Woodstock, catch Jimi Hendrix's electrifying closing performance and head outside to make your way around the Bindy Bazaar Trails, which were at the center of the festival. The museum also offers an augmented reality tour, titled Meet Me at Woodstock, narrated by Nick and Bobbi Ercoline, the couple seen embracing on the iconic cover shot of the Woodstock album. The tour takes you straight to the muddy field with concert recordings and stories from those who experienced the magic and madness of the one and only Woodstock.

Loved it! I would give yourself a couple hours to visit the museum. And if it's a nice day walk down the road to the original site and monument.

What a great vision to create this amazing museum. The films, interaction, pictures were all so great. The timelines were right on. I def. would go through again I know there were parts I was skipping or skimming cause the family had moved on.

We had a great time...the museum was awesome...all of the photographs, artifacts and information from such an incredible time in history! Relive the 60s

by GandalfPOK on 7/11/12The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

We spent almost 3 hours at the museum. It was an amazing journey back through a period of time that is unforgettable for those who were alive during the time. It covers politics, fashion, technology, sports, family life, and of course music and Woodstock. Interactive audio and video kiosks are available throughout to allow you to go back in time and perhaps catch up on what you missed. If you haven't been there yet, a visit to the museum needs to go right to the top of your list of things to do this summer.

So worth the visit. You must allow at least two hours, better if you have more time to walk the grounds. The Museum is an incredible effort in preserving this moment in history. Excellent displays, excellent stories captured in video clips. Buildings are architecturally beautiful, grounds are well maintained. Added bonus if you are also attending a performance at the first class amphitheater.

    The Museum At Bethel Woods

by lennster on 7/9/12The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

I was expecting more than what was displayed, especially with regards to Woodstock Festival. Some of the info. was interesting but after attending the festival in '69 I thought there would more memorabilia, more personal interviews with attendees & musicians. Something that wasn't in the movie that offered up a different insight, viewpoint, etc. The items in the store were limited in scope, of all the clothes that people wore during that time period one would've thought some of those clothes would have been available with the Woodstock insignia.

by Gwylie on 7/2/12The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

The overall experience was very good. We spent three hours that went by very quickly. I would allow 3 hours minimum to get the best out of the museum. I wish I had another hour but needed to get to the concert.

    An incredible museum

by Honeybee8888 on 6/19/12The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

This was our second time at the Museum; we spent 4 hours the first time and more than 3 this time. It is an inspiring and wonderful place which tells my story (Child of the Sixties, or the Woodstock Generation if you prefer) and brings me back home to myself. This museum is excellent in its creation, its mood, and in how it tells the story of the 60s. I plan to become a member, because it is so worth supporting. The special exhibits, both last time and this time, were also excellent. I can't recommend it highly enough. The setting is also fantastic--the rolling hills and views are so beautiful, the ambience of the property is wonderful. Bring a picnic lunch, walk the pathways over the hillside, and simply soak it all in.

by itsthateasy5813 on 6/18/12The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

Beautiful scenery/concert at the venue where peace broke out in 1969 !!! Lady A w/ Darius Rucker & Thompson Square are a powerful & moving event that captures their music just the way it sounds on the airwaves. Bethel Woods is rated one of the top fifteen outdoor concert arenas in the world. if so then the other fourteen must be incredible. Spend the day here visiting the museum and watching a live performance. Worth the time to visit and experience history in beautiful upstate NY. Thanks to the visionaries who made this part of American culture find a permanent home here.

by TheFoolonthehill on 6/18/12The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

The museum is well worth the price of admission. There is much more than just "Woodstock memorabilia"--it is interesting to explore the political, social and musical climates of the 1950s-60s.

You've Got To Get Yourself Back to the Garden!

by NYCTangie on 4/5/12The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

It's a really fun museum that's actually very modern. There's more than just the usual pieces on displays too. There's videos with fun facts including one inside a Magic Bus in addition to a huge dome that displays clips from Woodstock in surround sound--think IMAX but 360 degrees...did I mention there's huge bean bags you can sit on and gaze up at the screens? There's exhibits on more than just Woodstock too but the Sixties in general. Since it was only built in 2008 it's in really good condition. The staff there was also extremely nice and helpful. When we went it was raining but the grounds outside and surrounding it are beautiful so highly recommend going in the late spring or summer. And they host concerts etc. too. If you love the Sixties and the music/scene of the time this is a must see...especially if you're in the Hudson Valley/Catskills area.
