About

The Story of Woodstock and the '60s at The Museum at Bethel Woods

The Museum at Bethel Woods offers one of the country's most impressive exhibits devoted to the 1960s. The award-winning The Story of Woodstock and the '60s follows significant events throughout the tumultuous decade, leading up to the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair, which was held on the spot where the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts now stands. Located in the 6,728-square-foot Main Exhibit Gallery, this permanent exhibit is a vivid feast for the eyes, including 5 interactive productions, 20 films, 164 artifacts and over 300 photographic murals. Check out the iconic fashion, listen to the pioneering music and watch original, never-before-released footage from the festival. Before you visit, don't forget to grab your grooviest garb.

About The Museum at Bethel Woods

Take a technicolor trip back to the 1960s at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the site of the storied Woodstock Festival. Located roughly 100 miles northwest of New York City, the small town of Bethel became a legendary music landmark practically overnight when some 450,000 people descended on Max Yasgur's dairy farm during a rainy four-day stretch in mid-August 1969. Today, The Museum at Bethel Woods has become one of the area's top attractions for music and history buffs. Along with the main multimedia exhibit called The Story of Woodstock and the '60s, the Museum features annually rotating special exhibits — both inside the center and throughout the historic site — as the collection of '60s artifacts continues to grow. Hear stories about the 32 groups that performed at Woodstock, catch Jimi Hendrix's electrifying closing performance and head outside to make your way around the Bindy Bazaar Trails, which were at the center of the festival. The museum also offers an augmented reality tour, titled Meet Me at Woodstock, narrated by Nick and Bobbi Ercoline, the couple seen embracing on the iconic cover shot of the Woodstock album. The tour takes you straight to the muddy field with concert recordings and stories from those who experienced the magic and madness of the one and only Woodstock.

    A Walk Down Memory Lane

by E. M. on 11/3/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the Museum at Bethel Woods. It really brought back memories for us. We appreciated how everything was presented. There was such a variety of material - written, photos, videos, objects. It took us about 3 hours to go through the museum. We would recommend it.

My first visit to this iconic location

by Jim Hertwig on 10/21/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

I’ve long wanted to visit here, and am very glad I finally made it. It’s a great place to experience a little bit of the historic event that changed music and our lives. The many video clips give you a feeling for what the attendees experienced. I hope to revisit someday.

    Tripping through history

by Kevin on 10/15/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

What a wonderful museum full of memories! The exhibits were interactive and entertaining and the property is beautiful and unspoiled. My only feedback is to have the original concert site better marked as it was difficult to locate the plaques based on the instructions from the museum staff. More picnic areas might also be nice but overall a fabulous experience.

    Worth every minute spent

by Peter and Kelli on 9/25/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

It was the best 26 hour vacation ever! Toured the exterior grounds on our own and then saw Santana and Earth, Wind, and Fire! Excellent concert! The grounds are beautiful and well layed out. No lines at the porta-potties. Plenty of places to get food, drinks, and merch. Were given a lawn chair even though I never received confirmation of my reservation. Wasn't even difficult leaving the grounds afterward - not compared to other venues. The next day we came back to see the museum. It was so well done. We stayed a long time. We also took a guided tour of the grounds and backstage of the pavilion. Our tour guide, Joe from Newburgh, was phenomenal! He gave us so much information and was so friendly. He was the best part of the weekend! Thanks, Joe! We spent a bit of money in the gift shop, too. Nice merch. For someone who too young to go to Woodstock '69 but always wanted to go, this place was awesome!!! You made me very happy, Bethel Woods. We'll be back someday and I'm telling everyone about our time there. Top notch experience!!!
