The Story of Woodstock and the '60s at The Museum at Bethel Woods

The Museum at Bethel Woods offers one of the country's most impressive exhibits devoted to the 1960s. The award-winning The Story of Woodstock and the '60s follows significant events throughout the tumultuous decade, leading up to the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair, which was held on the spot where the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts now stands. Located in the 6,728-square-foot Main Exhibit Gallery, this permanent exhibit is a vivid feast for the eyes, including 5 interactive productions, 20 films, 164 artifacts and over 300 photographic murals. Check out the iconic fashion, listen to the pioneering music and watch original, never-before-released footage from the festival. Before you visit, don't forget to grab your grooviest garb.

About The Museum at Bethel Woods

Take a technicolor trip back to the 1960s at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the site of the storied Woodstock Festival. Located roughly 100 miles northwest of New York City, the small town of Bethel became a legendary music landmark practically overnight when some 450,000 people descended on Max Yasgur's dairy farm during a rainy four-day stretch in mid-August 1969. Today, The Museum at Bethel Woods has become one of the area's top attractions for music and history buffs. Along with the main multimedia exhibit called The Story of Woodstock and the '60s, the Museum features annually rotating special exhibits — both inside the center and throughout the historic site — as the collection of '60s artifacts continues to grow. Hear stories about the 32 groups that performed at Woodstock, catch Jimi Hendrix's electrifying closing performance and head outside to make your way around the Bindy Bazaar Trails, which were at the center of the festival. The museum also offers an augmented reality tour, titled Meet Me at Woodstock, narrated by Nick and Bobbi Ercoline, the couple seen embracing on the iconic cover shot of the Woodstock album. The tour takes you straight to the muddy field with concert recordings and stories from those who experienced the magic and madness of the one and only Woodstock.

Awesome place to visit if you LOVE music!

by LinRow on 9/8/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

Although we arrived during torrential rains, there were lots of visitors at the Museum at Bethel Woods. The exhibits at the museum are beyond awesome. There are pictures, music, set lists, movies, artifacts, costumes, etc. Everyone there was nice and friendly. The only thing that really surprised us was the prices in the gift shop! Everything was overly expensive!!! I understand that the Museum runs on donations but overpricing your merchandise is not going to sell anything. The trip was very informative and entertaining.

    Flashback to Woodstock

by plsCompost on 9/5/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

A beautiful building that houses the museum of the infamous Woodstock concert sits above the actual hill where over 400,000 youths sat to make history. We walked on the hill where people, known as hippies (to most onlookers) gathered for a 3 day concert. We only remembered the happening from articles and pictures from LIFE magazine. To truly appreciate what happened, come read about it and listen to the stories and see the videos. The museum was a great space and well done. We really enjoyed our time there, absorbing all that America in the 60's faced. Plus it's air conditioned, clean and the volunteers are so pleasant!

The museum was great and the staff was exceptional

by Poppa Z on 8/29/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

The museum itself was awesome. Not only the history of the music but the history of the time was captured perfectly. The staff was very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. The iPad tour of the outside grounds was also excellent and walking the hill actually gave me a feeling of actually being at the festival in 1969. A great experience that I will be recommending.

A must see when in Bethel NY

by Nancy M on 8/17/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

The museum thoughtfully looks at the context of the social upheaval during the 1960s leading up to the Woodstock Festival. The music brought back many memories and the archival video footage made me feel like I was there. This is a 'must see' for music lovers of any age!!

    Three Generation Visit

by Pappy Jim on 8/16/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

What a wonderful experience. My son, grandson and I visited recently. We found the museum very interesting and informative. I was serving in the Navy in 1969 but remember the news after it was held. Visiting the festival site was also very moving. Great job to the staff of Bethel Woods.

    More “experience” than museum

by K.C. on 8/14/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

A few years too young for the original event, but they did a great job setting the stage for the time in which Woodstock occurred. We were told it would take 2 hrs. We stayed three & we still kind of rushed. I could have spent 4-5 easily. A Volunteer, John, met us at the door, super nice guy, added warmth and a wealth of personal knowledge to the experience. My husband suggested they run the movie, Woodstock, on a loop-worth the 3 the trip.

    Woodstock

by Sunnyburt on 8/4/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

The museum is super cool. There is a lot to see. They need more directions for outside. We just wandered around because there was no one to tell us where to go. Luckily we figured it out and saw that the actual memorial if about a mile away.

    Day trip

by Cosmo on 8/3/22The Museum at Bethel Woods - Bethel

First we never were able to get any discounts, senior citizen and or the buy in advance price. Thought we could fix it at the museum but couldn’t. We were even offered free admission prior to going into the museum. 34 dollars down the drain. The museum was actually very nice and interesting. However there was absolutely nothing else to do or see there.
