Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour
Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.
Monty Python's Spamalot Background
Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.
It was everything we expected and more. We loved the traditional Monty Python humor and they way the cast integrated references to the local area.
I am never certain when experiencing Spamalot whether I am enjoying Monty Python or Mel Brooks -- they both have the same kind of zany, unpredictable appeal. This production is classic Monty Python, both because it provides equal time irreverence to all available subjects, and because it draws from a number of Monty Python classics of the past. You have to see this production at least twice, just to try and catch the majority of its humorous moments. It is difficult to even keep up at times with the fast-paced, ever-changing combination of zany lyrics and visual humor, so you must be ever attentive! Although I would never pay to see a Monty Python production just for the quality of the music performed, the lead and supporting characters sang well -- especially the Lady of the Lake.
Spamalot was simply amazing! I laughed soo hard through the whole performance. The acting was superb! All the actors where amazing, I especially loved The Lady of Lake, what a voice, and the actor who played Not yet dead Ned, his facial expressions were right on the money. I didn't want the show to end! I cannot say enough good things about this show, and would love to see it again! I highly recommend it! I would just like to add, this is not a show for young children. I would recommend 13 and up for this show.
One of the best productions I have ever seen. I think that is because of the theatre that it was featured. The theatre was smaller and the sound was crystal clear and everybody could hear and understand the lines of the actors. The talent was exceptional. I would go to see this again and again. What ever Wheeling WVa is doing keep it up.
Very funny show!!!! Better then when I saw it in New York!!!!!
Great fun! The show follows the movie well and has some good one-liners!
I purchased the tickets for my son. He LOVED the play. He has seen Spamalot about 4 or 5 times, in a variety of venues, and really enjoyed this performance.
Wow great from start to finish...I hurt from laughing so hard...Everyone should see this show...
I'm a long-time Python fan and was a little leery about seeing a Monty Python show that didn't have any of the Pythons in it. I thought it would be a watered down mish-mosh of some of the most mainstream Python bits. But I was very pleasantly surprised. It was essentially a live version of The Holy Grail with extra songs and a few other Pyhton bits added in. But the execution and feel of it was true in the MP spirit. Some of my favorite scenes from Holy Grail, which I'd committed to memory years ago, were very close to the originals. Loved it !
Exactly what I wanted. From the time I opened my playbill, I was smiling and laughing! Yes, even the Playbill was ridiculous, as expected. If you are or were a Monty Python fan, or even if you aren't and just love silliness, here it is in all it's Glory. Who could ever forget "The Song that Goes Like This?" Enjoy!
Oh WOW!!! This show is so funny!!!! If you love anything Monty Python you will love this show!!!!
I saw the show again, I had to bring my friend to see it. I saw so much more this time around, and now have a new appreciation for the ensemble. The ensemble women are beautiful, and the men are hilarious and such strong performers. Thank you for an incredible night!
This was a beautiful production! The cast was incredible, they brought a wonderful, youthful energy to the show. My only complaint is that the sound came in and out at times, but overall it was a great experience.
Great show! Funnier than i could have imagined. Go see it if you get the chance!!
Beautiful show... hilarious ..... could not stop laughing... Far better than I ever imagined....
I have to admit, there were a few "Seriously...they made that into a song..?" moments. However, it kept a good sense of humor throughout. I did find the second half a bit funnier than the first. I would definitely recommend this for any Monty Python fan. I don't think it would be a musical I would watch multiple times though.
Spamalot totally lived up to the hype. There were no slow parts in the whole musical. My family and I could not stop laughing. We will definitely go again!
Absolutely hilarious, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time.
excellent production, despite the lack of star power.
Saw this at The Pantages in LA, I saw it years ago in Omaha Nebraska so forgot how funny it was, this is a great production, I would recommend it to anyone, its very funny and will make you forget about life's cares in one evening.
