Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.

Monty Python's Spamalot Background

Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.

Loved Spamalot! Have been a big fan of the Monty Python group of productions and loved the way they turned it into a Broadway Musical. The voices were superb and the costumes very eye catching. Kept my attention the entire production.

Great show, it would be amazing in a small actual theatre and not a convention center setting. Lady of the Lake is Hot, Fun for all Python fans and others.

  • AMAZING

It was an unforgettable experience for me and my friend. Anyone who loves or even just slightly enjoys Monty Python will most definitely enjoy this show. Great experience to have attended. Also enjoyed the perks of being upgraded to row 6 on the floor.

I can't believe there weren't more people at this event.

  • Spamalot was a waste of time and money.

by WISLN on 3/15/13La Crosse Center - LacrosseRating: 1 out of 5

The play was more than forgettable, it was a waste of my money and my time, neither of which I can ever get back. The actors looked bored, I was bored. Even though there were some musicians, the primary orchestration was taped. Certainly not what I expected. Overall, it was very disappointing. I'm sorry I went. I wish there was a rating below one star because that what this deserved.

  • Laugh-a-lot

I was unsure at first what to expect from Spamalot but I can say that without performing the movie version of the Holy Grail this was a lot of fun. There were plenty of laugh out loud moments without the show descending into crude or lewd. For Monty Python lovers this is a must.

  • Unique and very entertaing

Spamalot was amazing! This was my second time to see the touring group of Spamalot. It was hilarious and a great way to spend a cold Saturday afternoon! I would go to it again.

An absolute hilarious play. Fantastic cast! Totally enjoyed the play and I am not a big Monty Python Fan.

This was a fabulous show! We had great seats (highly recommend getting floor seats as close as possible to the strage) and enjoyed the entire performance. I recommend it to anyone, even those not familiar with Monty Python. Enjoyable evening all around!

Spamalot is based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but it is sufficiently different to keep it fresh and exceptionally funny.

  • Crazy-Good Fun!

by HollywoodWriter on 6/21/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Spamalot is excellent! It’s well written and cleverly staged and performed. Alas, the current touring show doesn’t have any of the original Monty Python cast, nor is it led by a familiar face and persona such as John O’Hurley (who played King Arthur in an earlier version of the show). But it’s still jolly-good fun. The jokes are still hilarious. The songs brilliantly irreverent, and the whole thing trots along smartly, creating pure theatre pleasure. Go. Enjoy. This musical will show you “the bright side of life.”

  • Spamalot is really funny

    by milady128 on 3/29/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

This was such a wonderful experience for Python aficionados We loved it, and were able to follow most of the scripts from the movies. Really funny evening. Those sitting next to us had never seen a Python film before and were totally unimpressed.

  • Great girls night out with my 10 year old daughter

    by 1SpringsteenFan on 3/14/12Capitol Theatre - WheelingRating: 4 out of 5

I was a little worried that this would be a bit too raunchy for my 10 year old daughter, but I decided to take her due to some of the other reviews. I am so glad I did. She and I both laughed throughout the whole evening. Although she may not have gotten the ornery puns hidden in some places, she did get most of the play. I would highly recommend this play to anyone with a sense of humor. Don't fret too much about taking your 10 year child. I think any age less than that may not really get it, but just my opinion. Enjoy!!

  • Spamalot alotta fun

by EZReviewer on 3/12/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Spamalot has a lot to recommend it. It is smart and silly and you don't need to have seen Monty Python to appreciate the show. However, if you enjoyed Monty Python's Flying Circus and The Life of Brian, you'll love Spamalot. And, if you have broad taste in humor you'll really like Spamalot.

  • So Funny but inappropriate for younger children

by cmern on 3/12/12Capitol Theatre - WheelingRating: 4 out of 5

Was hysterical and the show flew bye so very fast. It left you wanting more The only thing that made me feel uncomfortable was there was many young children in the audience and the play is adult themed.

  • Spamalot was very entertaining!!!

The musical was very entertaining and funny! For those who love the Monty Python & The Holy Grail movie, this is a must. We had a great time and laughed out loud many times.
