Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.

Monty Python's Spamalot Background

Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.

  • Whatever happened to good theater?

Full of good old Monty Python fun, music and dance all wrapped up into one, what more could you ask for? I always have trouble watching musicals/movies when I already know the story because I never feel like the actors did justice to the original production I've loved for years. This was not true in this case. Spamalot followed the storyline completely, and at the same time not at all.

  • Spamalot was Terrific Fun!

Although I really enjoyed Monty Python on television, I must admit their movies didn't particularly thrill me. However, I was absolutely tickled by the musical-comedy live theatre version of Monty Python and The Holy Grail aptly titled Spamalot. This was a marvelous production filled with ingenious set design, clever costuming, great performers and a funny and joyous musical score. I rarely wish for a live show not to end, but I certainly did in the case of this exuberant and fun romp!

It was fun & professional. It just missed the one scene at the bridge with the guard asking " What is your favorite color...."

Great show for a laugh. Random and crazy just like Monty Python tends to be with some fun twists for the audience. Good stuff!

Loved it! Spamelot was my first show ever, and what a great experience! Funny, smart, and entertaining! It was well worth it sitting in traffic for and hour and 20 mins just to watch this show.

  • British humor that makes you laugh

    by Vince90048 on 3/6/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

If you're a fan of British humor or you've seen any of the Monty Python movies, you'll enjoy this show. It is entertaining and has some laugh-out-loud moments. The songs are light and fun, too. Watch out for rabbits with sharp teeth!

  • Spamalott Almost kid friendly

    by one4dducks on 3/6/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Pantages theater , Clean and Parking available. Seats very narrow, not comfortable for 6 footers. Show was fun, fast moving and nostalgic. Plenty of laughs and current material thrown in. For my 11 and 13 year old boys a few crude gestures and foul language but was at a minimum.

  • Spamalot - The Tour

    by GNat1028 on 3/6/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Excellent show! I would go see this again. I was laughing so hard... I was actually quoting lines from The Holy Grail. The French taunting, Bring Out Your Dead...it's all hilarious!

  • Spamalot

by Michaelambgelo on 3/6/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 1 out of 5

Way too much mundane "Broadway musical" and not enough Python. Kept wondering when the singing and dancing would give way to the classic humor. Pure Las Vegas. Might as well have thrown in the Rockettes. Some of the songs seemed to be inserted only for set changes or to stretch the performance out. Even what humor was there would cause Python purests to be nauseous at it's juvenile punchlines. I left 20 minutes before it ended (and that was 45 minutes past my limit....) If you haven't seen Monty Python's films and you love musicals you might enjoy the show. If you really appreciate Monty Python humor save yourself some money and watch "Monty Python at the Hollywood Bowl" or the real "Quest for the Holy Grail".

I hope this production returns to the Pantages in the near future. I was unable to stay for the entire performance. Would definitely come again.

  • Too Much Fun

This show is a scream! Anyone who's ever seen any Monty Python stuff will have a blast.

I assume that if you're reading this, you already have seen 'Holy Grail' and want to see this show. The show starts out very close to the plot in the movie for the first half. By the second half, things diverge, but it's very Pythonesque all the way through.

  • Awesome!
