Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.

Monty Python's Spamalot Background

Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.

Overall it was Monty Python which I grew up with and enjoy tremendously. Unfortunately the sound was horrible and I had a hard time making out what the actors were saying stage during regular speaking parts. The musical part of the show was fantastic and I really enjoyed the Lady in the Lake parts. I would like seeing the play again but maybe from different seats. It had been my experience in the past that when the show started no one was allowed in or out unless during specific moments. My seats were right next to the exit and the ushers were constantly letting people come and go as they please not to mention the ushers were standing around the exit and it was kind of distracting from the performance.

My husband and I decided to go see Spamalot on his birthday--0what a great way to celebrate. They crafted a hilarious mixture of Monty Python humor, with bits and pieces from and nudges to so many other plays from the past and present. There were a few awkward transitions, but mostly it was a roaring, laughter-filled good time.

Saw Spamalot, with Richard Chamberlain, in Cleveland. The one at E.J. Thomas was 100% better. I really enjoyed the show & the cast was amazing!! The only suggestion I have is that people look into what they are going to see before bringing small children to a show like this.

Husband is a huge fan of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" and he absolutely loved "Spam-A-Lot." The dialogue was a nice mix of bits verbatim from the movie and original scenes.

Spamalot was excellent! Had an enjoyable time. It did help to know who and what Monty Python is. We had a few teens in front of us who never heard of Monty Python - 2 fell asleep and one texted all night. Of course all the real fans loved it - like us! Now we want to go back and watch the movie again. EJ Thomas Hall was great - great views from wherever you sat.

  • Loved the Production.

It went as well as was expected. Could have used subtitles or a headset, but that's just me. Ni.

  • I loved Spamalot

We saw Spamalot at E.J. Thomas in Akron, OH. I was a fan of the Holy Grail Movie, but this was so much better. The songs were great, the actors were great and I loved how they adapted the special effects to the stage. Nothing was left out from the movie. Everyone had a great evening. I would highly recommend this production for just about everyone (there is a small bit of cursing in the production).

  • Spamalot was the best play I have seen

I am not a fan of musicals but Spamlot was so well done that it didn't matter that it was a musical. I haven't laughed so loud and hard in years. I am a huge Monty Python fan and this was one of the best works of theirs that I have seen. It was amazing that they were able to do so much with only 21 people in the cast. I would/will go see it again if it returns.

Its about half "Holy Grail" reunion tour and half new. My 11 year old know very little of the Holy Grail and spent most of her time laughing at the show or laughing at me. Although most of the touring cast is relatively unknown they were well casted and excellent performers. At times the sound was poor. I do not know if that was the company or EJ Thomas Hall (Akron).

The play was extremely entertaining. The theater was beautiful and had a very helpful staff. My only criticism would be, I wished it was a wee bit louder. I sat towards the back of the theater.

  • Great comedy, high quality cast.

I hardly qualify as an expert on Broadway style musicals (this being my first), I thoroughly enjoyed this show. The cast was excellent, the sets were well done and the pit orchestra was great. The show is well written and very funny, even if you're only a casual fan of Monty Python.

Spamalot continues to be absolutely hilairous. This show is good for all types of senses of humor - dry and cerebral, slap-stick and silly, etc. I am amazed at how well-timed the comedy is. The pausing is nicely planned so that you never miss a joke.

  • Spamalot is laughter with a side of smile

Once in every show, there comes a review like this, it starts off soft and low, and ends up with a kiss..... Great time, great cast, and well worth it. The musical kept us laughing even before the start of the show with the playbill having a farce about Finland, and ending with a "bang". My compliments to the writers, directors, producers, and cast for putting on such an entertaining show. And it becomes even more entertaining if you have a chance to see the original Camelot muscial a few months ahead of the show.

  • Spamolot is great to warm someone up to musicals

My husband and my father loved Spamalot, even though they aren't typically interested in musical theater. They loved the Monty Python movies, and Spamalot's self-depricating and delightfully crude humor won them over! However, if you think you're going to see a stage version of the Holy Grail movie, that's not the case. But it's hilarious and the cast is quite talented!
