Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.

Monty Python's Spamalot Background

Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.

    Find Your Grail...SEE THIS SHOW!

by Anonymous on 12/9/10Emens Auditorium - Muncie

When I heard that Spamalot was coming to Ball State University, I immediately jumped at the opportunity to see it. After having seen it on Broadway with a few of the original cast members, I was completely blown away by the professional quality of the performance as well as the outstanding performers of the touring company. An absolutely delightful show!!!!

    Spamalot Was Great!

    by cbybee248 on 12/9/10Emens Auditorium - Muncie

The production of Spamalot was wonderful. Even my wife, who doesn't have a great fondness for Monty Python or British humor in general, loved it. We would recommend this play to anyone, especially if they are fans of Search For The Holy Grail.

    Patsy stole the show!!!

by handsomeharlot on 11/6/10Springfield Symphony Hall - Springfield

This show was better than I had anticipated. All of the characters were very engaging! The jokes were excellently timed. The props were not as grand as I've seen for Spamalot, but they were still very effective. Patsy was especially delightful! He had so much character and charisma that I found myself seeking him out in the scenes. Despite his few lines, Patsy's face was so expressive that he was providing entertainment within the entertainment. King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake were also fabulous actors who deserve special mention. Actually, the whole cast was really fantastic! But Patsy out shined them!

Monty is back to the future

by Chefbeef on 11/6/10Springfield Symphony Hall - Springfield

Loved the show..Spamalot was classic Monty Python in a flowing contemporized version of Holy Grail. Short, sweet, fun and thoughtful. Just irreverent enough to remind us that it was a Python, not so comedic that we forgot about the classics. I would see it again. Grats ,especially to the cast for making it Broadway and tributing the Python in all of us. I went to see a Python production and left with the memory of a well done Musical..Thanks to all who made it happen..

Spamalot--- non-stop fun, music and dancing!

by Graffini on 10/22/10Warner Theatre - Erie

The show was everything I expected from Monty Python. The costumes were outstanding, but the scenery was somewhat lacking. However, the energy and enthusium of the cast more than made up for the lack of scenery. If I had the opportunity, I would go see it again!

How could you not look on "the bright side"??

by bumblebeeatwork on 10/22/10Warner Theatre - Erie

I'm not sure what made me laugh harder--the French knights or the "dead guy" who doubled as a prince who really was NOT looking for a princess. Not sure Carmen Miranda would have approved of the dramatic license taken with her hat, but it was hysterical.... The cast did well, especially working on a stage that is smaller, I'm sure, than they're accustomed to. The time flew, and I enjoyed every bit of this show. Well done!

    Everything You'd Hope

    by Lynn27 on 10/22/10Warner Theatre - Erie

If you love Monty Python, this is everything you'd hope for. It's their perfect combination of clever and silly. It stays true to the Search for the Holy Grail but is definitely its own creation. They even managed a topical "The rent is too dam high" reference just one day after the NY governors' debate.

No one expected the Spanish Inquistion

by Pontoon on 10/22/10Warner Theatre - Erie

Spam, Spam, Spam,Spam, Spamalot...it is one long hillarious injoke between author and Python alumni Eric Idle and Broadway director, MIke Nichols and the audiance...as if a reprise from the cult classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail the cast and crew managed to bring the film to live theatre sparing nothing and noone in the process...from the opening clucking coconuts to the Holy Grenade of Antioch author, director, and cast carriedd on Python skit after another into a very entertaining evening...I doubt that noone in the Warmer's ample arena left without laughing themselves silly...or I will taunt you ah nother time, silly English pigdogs...everyone must see Spamalot!
