Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.

Monty Python's Spamalot Background

Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.

  • This Show is SO Much Fun!

by RhondaV on 12/21/10Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Spamalot for the second time on Friday December 18. I saw it for the first time in Vegas. I was not excited about seeing this show, I went because it was something my husband wanted to do. This show was GREAT. I laughed so much. Everyone in our group loved it and we were all pleased that my husband talked us into seeing it. When I found out that the touring company was coming to New Orleans, we knew for sure we were going to see it again. There are no dull or slow moments in this show. It is very funny, and you do not have to be a big Monty Python fan to enjoy it. I would def. reccoment this show to anyone who likes comedy and musicals, and I will see it again if I have the opportunity.

my family saw this play in london and could not wait to see it again when it came to new orleans. it was not the same at all as the london production, they seemed rushed and did not have the timing for the jokes.

They say that Laughter is the best medicine. In this time of financial woes, political strain, and confusing overall economic strain on everyone, I suggest that you go see "Spamalot". I went in thinking that it would be a real nothing show and I came out telling everyone I knew to go see it. I really needed the laughs and the reminiscing about a time past. I remember fondly watching Monty Pythons Flying Circus when I was much younger and was afraid that nothing could capture that feeling except the reruns and their movies. I was wrong what a delightful fun show. It was nice to see something that made you laugh and think as well. Show well done.

  • A wonderful trip back to Monty Python country

by Makeda42 on 12/21/10Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts - New OrleansRating: 4 out of 5

I was curious how the writers would handle Monty Python and the Holy Grail. They did a brilliant job. All of the famous skits are in the piece along with the full realization of music and dance. My supervisor and co-workers were discussing the musical today at work and we discovered that although my supervisor had never seen the movie, he still enjoyed the musical and was looking forward to seeing the musical. He was disappointed that some of his favorite bits with the Lady of the Lake was not in the movie, so I guess the overlay of that plot device worked for a novice viewer.

  • I'm not dead yet!

And neither is Monty Python. Though the story was slightly different, it was still just as funny. By far one of the best shows I have seen in a very long time. I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

As a long-time fan of Monty Python, I really loved the show! I highly recommend it. It was full of familiar Holy Grail references, the set was creative, the costumes were beautiful, the cast was wonderful, especially Linda Neel (the Lady in the Lake). She had an amazing voice. All in all, a delightful evening.

I never was much of a Monty Python fan, and now am wondering why. Spamalot had the audience roaring with laughter from the opening scene. The show is hysterical.

This show was hilarious. The actors and actresses were well spoken and easily heard, their voices fit their characters...and the subject matter was great! The theater was comfortable and parking was easy...costs $10.

  • Enjoyable but Silly

by HardShoeFanatic on 12/17/10Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts - New OrleansRating: 4 out of 5

I am a Monty Python fan from the 1970's and this was a silly re-hash of their older material wrapped up in the Quest. There really wasn't any new Python-esqe material here. The singing, and dancing was top notch. The sound was a bit tinny, which may have been designed that way on purpose so people unacustomed to British accents. My family and I had a great time.
