Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.

Monty Python's Spamalot Background

Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.

The cast and crew presented a very memorable event. The execution of the play went off flawless. The cast had an infectious energy that carried over to the audience. The book and music is very cleaver, very Monty Python. This is one show I wanted to see on Broadway, but was unable to. I don't think I missed anything as the touring group did an excelent job. The venue is one of the best in the southeast. The house staff was welcoming, and effeciant in getting us in, tending our needs, and getting us back out.

Didn't get to see this when in NYC. So glad I was able to see it in Charleston. Loved it!

This show is silly, irreverent, phenomenal, and amazing. The cast are fantastic singers and comedians. We had the best time and the audience was always laughing! Highly recommended. We saw it originally in NYC with Tim Curry, David Hyde-Pierce and Hank Azaria , but didn't miss them in this version. Very professional and so much fun!

I laughed until my jaws hurt. It was so much more than I expected. I was expecting the play to somewhat follow the movie, but was pleasantly surprised with the extra skits. You don't have to be a Monty Python fan to enjoy this show.

It was an amazing performance! I wasn't a huge fan of the movie so I was apprehensive. The musical was much better than the movie and I loved it!

  • Spamalot is worth a lot!

by Shrubberson on 1/13/11North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

I found the play to be very funny indeed, lots of the old gags from Monty Python, but also lots of new ones as well. Some of the best musical spoofs I can ever recall.. If you are a Monty Python fan, this play was not to be missed, even if you are not familiar with Monty Python I think you would have a great time. The sets were a blast, even intermission was funny!

by Anonymous on 1/13/11North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

Spamalot is a fun filled evening. While based on Monty Python, one need not have exposure to Monty Python to enjoy Spamalot.

  • Great entertainment for all ages (over 12)

by Sandwichgeneration on 1/13/11North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

I went to the Spamalot performance in North Charleston with my 14 year old son and my parents who are in their mid-70's. We all laughed out loud during many parts of the event. Probably the only downfall for my son is being sandwiched between his mom and his grandmother, we really cramped his style when it came to the more bawdy jokes. Other than that, we all had a great time and walked out of there with big smiles on our face. The entire ride home we kept talking about the real talent that it took to write, perform, sing, and dance amid all of the chaos onstage. Would recommend to anyone - - - over age 12.

Great surprise. Hilarious script. All actors were strong. This is somewhat unusual for a touring company.

Saw this show twice on Las Vegas and knew how funny it was. Took my daughter and her husband and they thoroughly enjoyed it. Cast was terrific--great entertainment.

My huband and 16 yr old daughter have a great love for this old British humor. They have loved all the movies and this production was the TOPPER.... They really really enjoyed it and said the actors were wonderful and increadably powerful voices. This was the first time my husband has gone to a show but he now know why I LOVE IT SO.......

  • Wish I could see it again!

by sensei1 on 1/7/11Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

Loved it! Loved it! Loved it! Have I mentioned that I loved it? I'm a huge Monty Python fan, but I would have to believe that if you weren't, you'd enjoy it anyway. I tried to test that theory, but alas my non-Monty Python fan friend just wouldn't go. They actors and singers did an incredible job. I love that they did a few things to "localize" the play (i.e. incorporated "Who Dat", and "When the Saints Go Marching In". ) If they ever return or I'm in an area in which it plays, I might just have to go see it again. Sat in the balcony, but next time, I might have to try to get closer to the stage. Seats were still good, though, and I could see everything!

Spamlot is the perfect vehicle for the true Monty Python fan who would not otherwise go to a Broadway musical. It is hilarious and so professional. It is a great Broadway musical that pokes fun at Broadway musicals. It was well worth the time and money. I would highly recommend it!

I am a big fan of Monty Python and Spamalot was great! The performers are very talented and did a fantastic job setting the moods for the situations and executed all the classic Holy Grail jokes perfectly with a few additions of their own.

  • For Monty Python lovers

If you like Monty Python, then you'll really enjoy this Python spoof of the classic, and comparatively stuffy, Camelot. I laughed out loud for most of the first act.

Did not know what to expect, but it was laughs from start to finish. A great presentation of the Holy Grail. Costumes and scenery were excellent. Caroline Bowman has a wonderful voice, along with the cast. Overall, it was very entertaining and a fun way to spend the evening.
