Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour
Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.
Monty Python's Spamalot Background
Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.

Spamalot was entertaining & the cast was talented.
Great cast, great production, great show! So much fun! I highly recommend it!
I saw Spamalot on Broadway and bought the Opera House tickets for Christmas presents. The recipients told me they thoroughly enjoyed it.
This show was fantastic and lots of fun! A lady in front of me said she had also seen it on Broadway and this was just as good. Very irreverent.
This is my second time to watch Spamalot and I would recommend to any and all Monty Python fans. The Lexington Opera House was nice but felt cramped and seemed to effect the spacing of the performers, props, etc. Also, if you know the original soundtrack you will be distracted by several songs perfromed at noticably slower tempos. Other that that, a great show and a great time.
Spamalot was ridiculously ridiculous and hilariously funny! I don't think we stopped laughing through the whole first act! Acting, staging, singing....all wonderfully executed! Quite a tribute to the Python troupe--but enteretaining all on its own even for those not familiar with their work. My husband, teenage son and I HIGHLY recommend! Also, preshow event with cast at Horse & Barrel was a great mood-setter, and the Python-themed appetizers (Spam in every form, Coconut chicken) and decorations were wonderfully clever!
One of the top 3 plays/musicals I have ever been to. Great entertainment value.
Although I'm not a huge fan of the Holy Grail movie, the musical is pure fun. No worries about seriousness when you go to see it, and the traveling cast injects some local flavor that makes it more entertaining. The music and physical comedy add a lot to the Monty Python classic.
Loosely based on Monty Python & The Holy Grail, there was enough content from the movie to make it familiar and confortable, and enough new content to make it fresh and very funny. I don't think they missed a single Broadway Cliche'!
My wife and I have gone to different types of events and this hands down the best and funniest show I have seen. The only bad thing was when I bought the tickets, I didn't know that a stanchion was between one of our seats and the stage so the unlucky person had to lean around to see the action on the stage. Other than that, the show was actually funnier than the movie it's based on.
Wonderful tickets, awesome seats, and a great show. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would recommend the show to anyone looking for a memorable experience!
Very good show! Laughed entire time! Actors were great!
I would see it again in an instant!!! Awesome show!!!!
Those lunatics are hilarious and I love them! Totally professional as well.
The portcullis went up on the first act and then next thing I knew it was intermission. the show is tootally engaging and so much fun that there are no boring parts. In fact, one of the more fun songs is "The Song That Goes Like This" which makes fun of the romantic song in the middle of all musicals. The humor gets a bit raunchy and bawdy now and then, but hey! it's Monty Python, that's to be expected. It was just good not-so-clean fun!
I have to preface my review by saying that "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" is my favorite movie. I have probably seen it over 20 times. The only thing that I wish had been in "Spamalot" that was not was something relating to the Gorge of Eternal Peril. Otherwise it was a stunning adaptation. I especially liked marrying Lancelot & Herbert. Well done, well done!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this musical on the most infamous british group around. The time flew by and I thought the cast did a wonderful job. It was my first time at the lexington opera house, however I definitely plan to go back soon.
This show is not to be missed! Truly a stunning tribute to the works of the Monty Python troupe, every moment of Spamalot was filled with laughter and nostalgia. Seamless set changes, inventive effects, and truly creative lighting combined to form a stunning technical spectacle. The cast is a solid troupe, with no weak links- a solid and enjoyable performance from all, with notable crowd favourites Glenn Giron as the faithful Patsy, and the divalicious Caroline Bowman as the Lady of the Lake. From Killer Rabbits to catapults, with references scattered throughout to Flying Circus as well as the other movies, Spamalot is a delight for any fans of Monty Python.
Love this musical adaptation of "The Holy Grail"....memorable songs and memorable moments. Classic Monty Python Humor. You either love them or you hate them.
