Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.

Monty Python's Spamalot Background

Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.

When I first saw the advertisement I could not wait to see the show. I took some friends that absolutely love Monte Python. Well, we were not let down. The singing was incredible and the cast was hilarious. Thanks for a great show.

  • All Hail Spamalot!!!!

Enjoy the brighter side of life at Spamalot! Smart, uproariously funny and irreverent humor! The production numbers and interaction with the audience will keep you involved and engaged, and the message is positive and uplifting! Don't miss this one! Once is not enough!

  • Spamalot? No, it was only mentioned once! LOL.

What a fun show! I was lucky enough to get FRONT ROW SEATS! But this is a smallish venue, so everywhere is good. But to get to see them up close and personal was wonderful. The singing and dancing were a hoot. I had a big smile on my face through the whole play. My boyfriend was not a Monty Python fan as I am, but he said he enjoyed the performance as well. That's saying alot, because you know how irreverant Monty Python can be! LMAO! I had heard from reviews and someone I know personally who saw it in Las Vegas how good it was, I am so glad I made the decision to get those tickets. But as I mentioned in the review title, SPAM was only mentioned ONCE!!!! ROTF!

This is a superb show! It was the 3rd time I saw it - absolutely love it! I have taken 2 friends and my sister to see it and they laughed their a** off! The show is really designed to make you laugh from beginning to end - from dancing nuns, flying cows, a killer bunny, cheerleading, needing a Jew to make a broadway show....and so on! A must see! Don't miss it!

It was very, very funny, we laughed until we cried. If possible we would go to a Monty Python Theatrical Production at least once a month just for the Medicinal Powers of Laughter. The Actors and the whole production was just phenominal. Great job!

Great show! My face and sides hurt from laughing so hard. Being a huge Monty Python fan helps but is not mandatory for having a totally fantastic time. Congrats to the cast and great job to the beautiful Fox Theater in Riverside! p.s. I'm still singing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life!"

I've been a fan of Monthy Python for many years, and when Spamalot was coming to me locally, I couldn't pass up the chance to see it. I was not disappointed! It's a hilarious show and very Monthy Python. The cast was wonderful, and the actress who potrayed the Lady in the Lake was the true star!

Had ctr seats 12 rows back - was very hard to follow the dialogue. Spoke too fast and numerous cast "sqawked" out lines. Although I would not recommend this for youngsters it was mildly entertaining just for something to do. No beverages in the Fox Theater in Riverside which would have made things a bit more pleasant.

  • Spamalot was an amazing show!!!

Hey this is a pretty good adaptation of what Monty Python is. If you are a fan you'll love it and even shake your head in appreciation of the many nods to the Holy Grail. There is a lot of new stuff but not so much to be irritating. Clever writing snazzy songs and expensive forests. If you're not a fan of Monty Python then you should figure out : what the heck is the matter with you. If you don't know what Monty Python is then you should just go lay down on the cart. I digress I had some older people behind me who during the intermission could not figure out what was so funny and what to heck was going on. Hey! I mean this! rent the movie(Monty Python in search of the Holy Grail) and watch it before you go, if you have never seen it, then chop down the mightiest tree in the forest with a herring. The show will be much more enjoyable for you and remember that rabbit is one mean bunny !!!! Ni.

  • Spamalot was Great

by RiversideJohn on 1/30/11Fox Performing Arts Center - RIVERSIDERating: 5 out of 5

Spamalot is truly inspired silliness. While you don't have to be a Monty Python geek (like me) to enjoy the show, it does help. They touch on all the major themes of the Holy Grail movie and some other Python material, however they are mostly sending up Broadway shows. It was a great show and this touring company is very good.

  • Spamalot I Liked Alot!

by MVCritic on 1/30/11Fox Performing Arts Center - RIVERSIDERating: 5 out of 5

I can rarely get my husband to the theater, and when I do I usually have to listen to negative criticism of the performance. There was no criticism of Spamalot. Both my husband and I spent the evening in hysterical laughter. What a talented cast! What a delightful score! A three-day stop in Riverside was not long enough!

  • Spamalot - Fun for my entire family

by Judge400 on 1/30/11Fox Performing Arts Center - RIVERSIDERating: 4 out of 5

The show was hilarious. It is a smart comedy mixed with great singing voices and spectacular dancing. Even the song lyrics are funny and outrageous. I highly recommend this show to teens and mature audience.

  • One of the best!!!!

by Mikie49 on 1/30/11Fox Performing Arts Center - RIVERSIDERating: 5 out of 5

I had seen this play at the Wynn several years ago with John O'Hurley and just loved it. Wanted to see the touring show to see if there was any difference. I have to admit John O'Hurley nailed it but the lead in this latest production ( Steve McCoy ) did a very good job. The staging was excellent, the songs were done very well and all the acting was superb. There were NO slow spots and the woman who played Lady Of The Lake ( Caroline Bowman ) was perfect and has a wonderful voice! She played the part over the top, just as it should be! All in all this was a wonderful experience and I would recommend it to anyone, even those die-hard " there is NO way I'm going to the theater " people. If you are only going to see one comedy theater show this year, make it SPAMALOT!

This was my very first Broadway musical experience at the Plaza and I have to say I was not disapointed. Spamolot was both charming and hilarious. This experience has convinced me to support the Plaza when they bring these these type of events. Two thumbs up!
