Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.

Monty Python's Spamalot Background

Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.

  • Most certainly not dead yet!

I've never listened to or seen this musical before, but I'm a big fan of both Monty Python and the Holy Grail as well as musicals and this certainly didn't skimp on either. It was not translated the meaning and soul of the work into musical format, it did it while creating an entirely original and new work itself. I feel I would have loved it just as much as I do even if I wasn't a Python fan. Musical and theater aficionados would love this especially. I feel this piece covers a wide range of niches; it truly has something for everyone. Not to mention, the acting and singing was superb, top notch really! Bottom line, my seats were crazy high up and I have a paralyzing fear of heights but I would sit through it a second time in a heartbeat.

My daughter and I attended a performance of Spamalot and loved every moment. We were familiar with the music and story, but had never seen the show. I haven't laughed that much in a very long time. A great big 'Thank you" to the musicians and performers!

I was glad to see how they were able to take some old favorites and make them fresh and new. The cast was wonderful and had a lot of fun putting on the performance. I wish they were here for more than one night.

The true talent is letting your performance talent shine, even when you're delivering perfectly silly content. And they did.

A combination of humor, social commentary, and downright sacrilegious joy. Lots of energy with great music and dancing and a very talented cast. This show is worth seeing more than once!

  • What a great twist on a classic. Hilarious!

Well, I have been a huge fan of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" forever. I walked into the theatre thinking that if it was as funny as the movie I would be happy. Let me tell you, I laughed pretty much the whole way through! What a blast. Between the babysitter, tickets and dinner we were way over 200 USD (for those Brits tuning in), but I'd pay it again. Cast was magnificent, sound was great and the humor was aplenty. Thanks Eric for bringing this to life!

  • Touring Company Creates Magic

by ffmichelle on 4/26/11Tallahassee Leon County Civic Center - TallahasseeRating: 5 out of 5

Many people think of a touring company of any Broadway show as sort of a "second string" cast. I've seen Spamalot on Broadway, and this touring company was just as amazing as the Broadway cast. They had great chemistry and really brought what was needed to make it an amazing show.

  • NOT just a smile...

...it was hilarious...we laughed out loud the whole time! The production was super, actors were terrific, audience was very appreciative...one of the best touring shows I've ever seen!

  • Spamalot was great!

by Anonymous on 4/26/11Tallahassee Leon County Civic Center - TallahasseeRating: 5 out of 5

Thoroughly enjoyed the production at the Tall Civic center. Laughed out loud at the Black Knight scene, the French Castle, and really enjoyed the references to Tallahassee and our Gov Rick Scott. The actors seemed to be having a good time and surprisingly sitting in the nose bleed section, I could still hear all the dialogue! One of the better touring productions I've seen.

This show was fantastic!! I am so glad I was finally able to see it!! I would definitely go again, given the option! Rip-roaring hilarious! They manage to tastefully poke fun of everyone under the sun, even themselves! Certainly a must-see show!!

  • Truly an awesome display for Python fans!

by Newtoarea on 4/10/11XXX100 - AshlandRating: 5 out of 5

The whole experience was wonderful. Most in the audience were smiling or laughing at the visuals even before the skit was acted out. Maybe a little too much time on "the song that goes like this," but overall an enchanting experience. Maybe the play needs a declaimer that ticket holders should at least have a passing familiarity with the movie, because those who had never experienced Python before were quite bewildered.
