Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour
Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.
Monty Python's Spamalot Background
Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.
Very good and "engaging" performance, we had a few good laughs. Be aware it is not very appropriate for the young kids.
What a show! Casting outstanding, staging very effective. Audience loved it!
The show, of course, was amazing. Plenty of the old Monty Python schtick, plus a generous helping of new jokes thrown in to keep it fresh. Well delivered. Great stage design, too. Not to mention, the folks at the Fox Theatre were wonderful.
This was an amazing production. There was great humor and heart felt performances. The cast was fun and energetic, and they had a refreshing zest for their roles. I would recommend Spamalot for anyone who needs uplifting.
Amazing! That's all I need to say! Incredibly funny and a perfect length time.
. My whole family has been Monty Python fans for years and I laughed through the entire play.. I loved every part and dont know if I can pick out a favorite scene. I've been singing " Always Look on the Bright SIde of Life " since we left!!
This was my 3rd time seeing Spamalot. It gets better every time. I would reccommend it to everyone. The Lady of the Lake did a great job. The entire production was spot on.
As a long time Monty Python fan, I thought I would enjoy this show, but I was not prepared for just how much fun it would be. I hold season tickets to the Theater of the Stars, and see 7-10 touring shows annually; this is easily one of the best I have seen in years.
This musical was everything I expected and SO much more! The scenes were hilarious, the music was catchy and the acting was phenomenal! I didn't want it to end! GO SEE THIS MUSICAL!
The theater was incredible. It was beautiful. Everybody was very nice and helpful. The show sounded great. There were a few things that bothered me and prevented a perfect experience. First, how does a Bud Light in a plastic bottle cost almost 7 bucks? If you want to price the beer so people don't drink it, then just don't sell it. Second, the seating is horrible. You're positioned right behind the person in front of you. I bought the most expensive tickets and was stuck looking at the back of somebody's head. There's no staggering of seats. I doubt they're going to remove the seating and reinstall them at a stagger so you're not directly behind the person in front of you. I was repeatedly reminded through the show, how bad this was. Honestly, I probably won't be seeing another show because of this, and it's be the first thing I've mentioned when asked about the venue. Even if you're not a child, use a booster seat. Which brings me to the third issue. I had two kids and their parents next to me that talked and asked questions the WHOLE TIME. I made the "hush" sound twice to no avail. I have two small children and I make it a point for them to know that silence is golden, especially when seats cost 60 each.
Very Good and Hilarious. It makes fun of typical musicals in a humorous way.
Being a Monty Python fan I was looking forward to the show and was not disappointed. Music was great, dancing was great as was the acting. Wish I had the money to see it again!
This production of Spamalot was every bit as good as the Broadway production we saw in NY when Clay Aiken was in it! The cast was very strong!
A unique and comedic display of talent by a genuinely gifted ensemble of actors!
Great, and at times ribald (this is a descendant of Monty Python) rendition of some of their funnier tunes with an homage to Holy Grail. Good send-up of Broadway, too! Gotta have the Jews! Not for young children, but older teens who have seen Holy Grail and have a penchant for pinching the nose of authority will like the show. It takes a bit to make me laugh out loud, and I did at Spamalot,.
Touring company performed as if The Fox was their home. They pulled the audience in (literally and figuratively). Wonderfully done. Laughs by all!
I was worried at the beginning that the show may be sub par because it wasn't the touring Broadway version. But I was extremely impressed with the whole show. The audience turn out was a little disappointing, but you couldn't tell in the performances. The Lady of the Lake had an amazing voice. This show did Monty Python proud.
How do I put this? When it first came to the FOX years ago it was PHENOM! Now, they've watered it down like trying to say that Roseanne Barr still has a shot at a singing career. The actors were Mediocre at best, the Sets were so cheap, the acting was horrible, it was a miserable time and money wasted. WHY DO THEY DO THIS??? I'm so disappointed being a huge Monty Python fan. I don't have to go on, just don't go, seriously, It's a joke.
this is one of the funniest shows i have seen i would recommend to everyone
The effects, the humor, songs, and overall performance was Incredible! The Lady in the Lake was phenomenal! We thoroughly enjoyed the show. And the venue: the Fabulous Fox Theatre is simply fabulous as always.
