Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.

Monty Python's Spamalot Background

Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.

More enjoyable than I'd imagined. My wife (27) and daughter (14) had never seen the movie, but loved the show as well. I'd highly recomend this to anyone.

  • Not for everyone...

Monty Python is not for everybody. Mostly the movies these guys made are quoted by nerdy guys in highschool. You know the ones who recite whole scenes at parties and expect you to laugh repeatedly with them. This show was kind of like that because many of the skits are similar to the movie scenes. My wife who was not familiar with the movie was a bit lost so I told her to just see each scene as a silly skit loosely based on the King Arthur's quest for the Grail. Loosely based... because there is not much of a story. It is not supposed to be that serious... There was a song that I was not sure how to take. It was the one that went on forever about "needing a Jew for a Broadway show". I was not sure if the song was making fun of Jews or pandering to the ones in the audience. I just did not get it. I was trying to figure out if my Jewish friends would like or hate that part. I suspect some will like the "shout out" and some will not. There were obvious potshots at homosexuals and several farting jokes and rude sexual gestures made by the French knights so this is not a show for the politically correct. Overall I would say the show was entertaining and I did laugh quite a bit. Others not familiar with the movie will be at a disadvantage.

  • Spamalot was Funalot

Loved the musical. Actors were great especially the woman who sang the Lady of the Lake. It helps to be familiar with Monty Python but the show stands on its own. The songs and jokes never stop coming. I laughed until I cried (really). The Fox Theatre is a great place for shows like this one.

If you are a Monty Python fan and loved the movie, The Holy Grail, then you have to see this touring Broadway production. I laughed so much! The songs were great. You will not be disappointed!!

  • Would go see it again

by cder on 6/7/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

We saw the show a few years ago when it came to town but our seats were not as good as we were able to get this time. I don't know why but a lot of the show seemed to be different as I did not remember some of the parts. I loved it both times. I think if it comes back in a few years that I might even go see it again!

  • Spamalot - Very Clever and Most Entertaining!

    by Freespirit2009 on 6/7/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Great wit and fun! As expected of Monty Python and Eric Idle (who I believe made this into a great musical). All the actors were fantastic - wonderful vocal talents and clever choreography. Every moment was wonderful - VERY funny. Just a stellar production all round. Don't miss Spamalot !!!

Fabulous singing, great dancing, subtle as well as outrageous humor! Listen to the dialog closely or you will miss half the humor in this presentation.

The performances were wonderful and brought everything you loved about Monty Python to life. They even included updated references to things in today's world to keep it fresh. We couldn't stop laughing!

  • Still laughing days later...

Been twice and it's just as funny the second time as it was the first. My checks hurt from the non stop laughing. Not a Monty Python fan, but really enjoy this show. A must see!

The lady of the lake's voice was absolutely phenomenal! It was a wonderful show and well worth seeing.

  • Spamalot was GREAT

by kwstkitty on 6/7/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

The cast of this touring Spamalot was exceptional. We had second row seats for the Sunday matinee, and I couldn't have asked for better. The "Lady of the Lake" was a stand out. We went with my son and daughter in law, and we all enjoyed it (I knew my son would, because he's a big Monty Python fan, but my daughter in law was very entertained as well) GREAT show!

  • Spamalot was hilarious

I had no idea what I was getting myself into but I knew my boyfriend really likes Monty Python so I bought the tickets and I am so glad I did. The show was funny and the singing was really terrific too. You really cannot go wrong at the Fox either.

  • Excellent Show!

by jawsatl on 6/7/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Took my wife and oldest son to this show since we're all big fans of Monty Python. The show was outstanding and the cast was absolutely hilarious. We enjoyed every moment of it and could only wish it was a big longer (the 2 hours just flew by!). I would highly recommend any MP fan to see this show. If you are not familiar with the movie "MP and The Holy Grail" you will not really understand much of the humor. A "must see"! and one show I would go to again!

Great show! It was a lot better than I was expecting and had quite a few surprises.

  • Spamalot (Touring)

    by kimbers1965uk on 6/7/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Very, very good performance in the Beautiful Fox Theatre of Atlanta. Lady of the Lake character was extremely good. However I have also seen this in New York on Broadway and the broadway version is much better. One thing that let the cast down was the accents, the accents (I think) are very important to the show and most of the cast could not get them. Very mediocre French, terrible Scottish from Tim and some ropey British accents.....I'm a Brit! But, all that said, I took my kids for the first time and they loved it.

We all enjoyed the show. I would go again when it is at a venue close enough.
