Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.

Monty Python's Spamalot Background

Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.

  • Spamalot was fantastic

We went to see this in NYC on broadway and thought it was great. We were not sure how good the touring show would be compared to the broadway show. I was pleasantly surprised as I felt it was just as good and would highly recommended.

This was my first time ever visiting the Fox Theater and it was wonderful experience. The staff was very helpful in looking for our seats, etc, and the theater as a whole was beautiful. Spamalot was absolutely hilarious and I would come back to see it again if their tour brings them back to Atlanta. Thank you, Fox Theater, for such an enjoyable night!

It's a deliberate "Broadway-ization" of some Python themes but without the cleverness or the marvelous absurdity. The "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" staging was an example of how this didn't work: to have someone who was merely feeling depressed sing it, rather than someone nailed to a cross, just about says it all about the "misses" in this show. Instead, they have thrown in some catch Python phrases and scenes, inserted some "funny" offensive jokes (alert to parents thinking of taking younger teenagers: some are close to the bone), camped it up with big show numbers and given it a grand theatrical finale. It's all done tongue in cheek, but tongue in cheek is a lifetime away from the edgy and outrageous inventiveness that we had hoped to re-experience at this show. If this type of Broadway treatment is your cup of tea, then you'll be happy: it's energetic, silly and moves along with plenty of songs and jokes. But do not go to this if you love the old Monty Python.

  • Spamalot was ok.

The play overall was just ok.My wife and I were hoping for something better from the cast but it seemed that they just wanted to get it over with.We came on opening night as part of my birthday celebration. We had been looking forward to seeing the play for several weeks and after driving over 200 miles left a bit disapointed. The Fox Theater as always was first rate. Our seats were just about 1/3 of the way back and right in center so we should not have had any trouble hearing and seeing the action on stage but that was not the case.We could not understand most of what the actors had to say. They seemed to mumble most of there lines. When they started to sing it did get a bit better. My wife is no Monty Python fan and this play did not help.Part of the problem had to be the sound system as seemed that only some of the speakers were working. The most disapointing part of the play was Sir Robin's(Martin Glyer) proformance of "You won't Succeed on Broadway".I had seen David Hyde Pierce proform it and I guess my sites were set a bit high but Mr.Glyer rushed through it ,left the jokes hanging, and did not deliver on any of the gag lines in the peice.Forget about trying to understand any of the words to "The Diva's Lament" Caroline Bowman's singing voice is great but as with most of the rest of the play we could not understand the words she sang.If my wife and I had been able to understand what was being said I am sure we would have found the play much more enjoyable then we did.

  • Hilarious singing and dancing!

Monty Python at his best! I didn't want to let this opportunity pass me by and I'm so glad I went! Python's songs are great, and these guys and gals delivered the classic lines brilliantly!

  • I lovealot Spamalot!

If you can handle the movie- Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail, you'll love this musical. The British humor is wonderful, and you'll smile and laugh from start to finish. It has all the crazy fun of the movie with the added sweet and cheesy Broadway dynamic built in. The songs- and the talented actors were wonderful and entertaining. The story line is silly, of course, but, that is exactly what we wanted. I can't wait to see it again. Thank you for touring, and please come back next year!

  • spamalot was nonstop British humor-laughed for 2 h

My huband, son and his girlfriend surprised our daughter and her husband for their 6th anniversary with tickets to Spamalot. My son and daughter have been fans of Monty Python since their teens. Of course my husband and I were into them in the 70-s. They were so pleased when they realized where we were taking them. And the play did not disappoint. We laughed so hard that our sides were splitting. So very very hilarious. The actors/singers/dancers were awesome, we gave them a standing ovation which was deserved. I must say though, this is ADULT humor, not appropriate in my opinion for 14 and under, but even during parts where I blushed a little, still couldn't stop the laughter. Pure silliness. But. when the evening was over, we couldn't stop singing "Always look on the bright side of life" and we all would rate it a solid 10. Thanks Monty!

  • Spamalot was Hillarious!

by Southeryn on 6/10/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Spamalot was awesome. I went to see the show because I originally wanted to see it in New York. Being a huge Monty Python fan the show was like watching a live version of one of the movies which was great. It had all the humor and wit that you would expect. I was laughing from the time it started til it ended. Even the person I went with loved the show and they aren't really Monty Python fans.

It was a very funny, highly entertaining evening. Great costumes. Great cast. Terrific voices. Easy to understand lyrics. A tale of yore with modern times one-liners. You can't help but laugh and have fun.

  • Spamalot must see for Python fans!!!

by motherofallcritics on 6/9/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

My husband and I took our son to see Spamalot for his 16th birthday. We are all Monty Python fans and thoroughly enjoyed the show. Never having seen Spamalot, we were very pleased with the blend of the familiar and the new: familiar characters and jokes with new jokes and songs added in. The acting was wonderful, singing and choreography top notch, the entire production was outstanding. But more than that - it was FUN!! I can't remember the last time I've had such a fun evening - especially one that included my teenage son!!

  • Spamalot Has Lost Its Lustre

by SuperDuke on 6/9/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - AtlantaRating: 2 out of 5

This play is a very difficult one to pull off well. The energy and comic timing have to be impeccable. Partly because the audience is going to inevitably compare the quality of the delivery to the original Monty Python movie (sort of hard not to do, as most of the dialog is taken directly from the movie); also, partly because the bar has been set so high by the quality of performances previously, by Tim Curry, David Hyde-Pierce, Hank Azaria and others. That being said, this cast (with a couple exceptions) don't pull it off. The result is a mediocre show experience. One exception was the Lady of the Lake; she was phenomenal! Kudos also to Sir Galahad. On the flip side, many of the smaller parts were so blase and uninspired that it ruined many scenes. King Arthur seemed to phoning-it-in, as well. So, if you want to see the show that earned a Tony award and rave reviews, get a time machine. If this is a sign of what we can expect from future tours of this show, we won't be seeing many more tours of this show. The thrill is gone.

  • Always Look On The Bright Side of Life!

    by Gu3z on 6/8/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Corny, clever, campy & catchy! Fun musical numbers, GREAT performers, creative sets. The Lady of the Lake was a show stopper--more than once! A powerhouse! Patsy was also outstanding. Wonderfully silly songs.

  • So much fun!

  • Spamalot was hilarious!!

    by Beachmom4 on 6/8/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

A thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all! The movie is one of my family's favorites and it was nice to see our favorite scenes from the movie played out on the stage! It translated well to the stage. The performers were all very talented. They were not only funny, but could sing and dance as well! The "Lady of the lake" was funny with a fantastic voice! The "I'm not dead yet" guy was a favorite as well! We went as a family for an early Father's Day gift for my husband. He is not a "play" kind of guy, but he had a great time and very much enjoyed it. I have to add that my kids are older teenagers and I do not recommend taking young children to it. That being said we had a great time and I would highly recommend it!

  • Excellent Show

They did a great job integrating the musical numbers into the story and making it their own. The Lady of the Lake has a phenomenal voice. The Atlanta Fox Theater deserves high marks as well. They moved us all from the back to the unsold seats very close to the stage. We really appreciated that. A very enjoyable afternoon.
