Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.

Monty Python's Spamalot Background

Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.

I saw this in Chicago a few years back and with the exception of a smaller set the show was just as amazing. The actor who played Robin was as good as David Hyde Pierce, and the whole cast was wonderful. And Lancelot was as talented at creating all of his characters as Hank Azaria.

  • Spamalot = same set seenalot

I was disappointed that the same set was used throughout 75% of the show - I got a little tired of seeing that castle back there. It was fun, and funny and I do recommend seeing it, though I would not see it again myself.

We really enjoyed Spamalot. The cast was wonderful. Almost all of our favorite bits were included in the show. We missed the witch bit, though. Highly recommend to true fans.

Great show and touring company. Second time we have seen it and better this time. Took my 12 year old daughter and 10 y/o son, both of whom love the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. However, they did not enjoy the show as much as the movie.

Superb production of a favorite play! Most remarkable for the two cast members in the central roles - King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake. What wonderful voices! Highly recommend this for everyone!

Still holds up even from seeing the original on bway. Funny as can be and well worth seeing it on tour if you appreciate Monty Python. All the actors were very talented and very close to the original I had seen.

If you have not been to see Spamalot you need to get out there and see it. If I had the money and the time I would have paid to go see the Sunday show as well.

I'm not sure if it's fair for me to write this since I saw the play on Broadway with the original cast and sets, etc. The touring production was scaled down, but those in my party who had not seen the original like it a lot. The cast was very good.

I did not know anything about this show prior to seeing it. I feel it was directed quite well and the actors performed with gusto! As a performer myself, it encouraged me to audition for it should I ever have the opportunity. Thank you all for a very entertaining evening!!!

  • Spamalot....STILL FUNNY!
