Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.

Monty Python's Spamalot Background

Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.

  • Charming, hilarious performance

As a long-time Monty Python fan, I knew I'd love all the bits taken from the movie HOLY GRAIL. The music is good and well integrated with the connecting sketches. Stand-out performance for me was ADAM GRABAU who played Lancelot, Tim the Enchanter, French taunter and Knight Who Says Ni (all the John Cleese roles).

  • Great show!

Anyone who is a fan of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" should definitely see this one. Yes, there were new scenes added in order to help enhance the overall story, but it still stayed true to the movie. It is not recommended for younger children, but older audiences should enjoy it.

As a Python fan, it was great fun. All the good scenes and the characters, with a few twists. I'm quoting all the lines again!

It was a fun time. Excellent show with catchy tunes and plenty of raunchy humor. A good adaptation of the movie.

  • Spamalot, a laugh-filled evening

I laughed so much my sides ached. And I walked out with tunes and jokes still ringing in my head.

  • Laughed Our Heads Off

This is our second time seeing Spamalot. This is an excellent production that captures all of the essence of the musical. All of the roles are very well done. I might rate John O'Hurley's performance as KIng Arthur in an earlier version of the play at the Ahmanson in 2008 a bit above this one, as O'Hurley has a masterful comic intuition, but that is only a minor nit and should not detract from an otherwise wonderful show. Highly recommended.

  • Spamalot! You'll laugh alot

    by peacehog6502 on 3/1/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

It takes the best humor from Monty Python and the Holy Grail (and a tiny snippet from Life of Brian) and creates a fun-filled musical. Although some bits are pulled directly from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, they put in some great new story material and hilarious moments to give it a fresh spin.

It was fabulous. The cast was right on! So much fun from start to curtain.

  • It should be criminal to laugh this much

    by 2kiddossofar on 3/1/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

The whole show was just entertaining and well written. The subtle jokes throughout ("hay") were nicely placed. The acting and songs were beyond hilarious...so much so that I had to keep checking on my son to make sure he wasn't hurling because he was laughing so hard. I have never laughed so much with a musical. So many diva moments from Lady of the Lake, French taunters bring it, "I'm Not Dead Yet" number is classic. This is my kind of entertainment. Even if you are not a die hard Python fan, this show is guaranteed to make you leave the theatre having peed your pants from laughing, or at least smiling that you where able to contain yourself enough not to have peed your pants. Yay for Eric and rest...this is one not to miss (and see over and over and over again).

  • Spamalot is AWESOME!!

by Arbella on 3/1/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Spamalot is great!! I loved every moment of it. The entire cast have wonderful voices. Brittany Woodrow, playing the lady of the lake and Michael J Berry who played Patsy were my favorites. Every actor played their parts perfectly! The evening was fantastic.

  • Encore! Encore!

This is the second time I've seen it and it was even funnier than I remember! The cast was excellent, especially the Lady Of The Lake. I could hear the dialog and song lyrics clearly. What an experience!

It was a wonderful show. I have seen it before and this cast did not disappoint! Giggled all night...if you need a great night filled with laughter , then go. You wont be dissapointed.

  • well performed, but humor was lacking

by ThyZAD on 3/1/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

It seems like they took the movie, that had a very subtle and focused sense of humor, and tried to write something for everyone to enjoy, which ended up alienating the fans of the movie. The musical had its moments, but now more than ever I feel like the movie should have been left alone.

  • Awesome

by Tuumalo on 11/5/11Star Plaza Theatre - MerrillvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Only complaint I have is it was only one day. I wanted to see it again that's how much I liked it. Hope it comes back again Iam so gonna be there.

  • Horse action-figure time!

by OldPolishProverb on 10/31/11Star Plaza Theatre - MerrillvilleRating: 4 out of 5

The training and grooming that went into these beautiful creatures were clearly evident. How they were able to get those magnificent stallions to do shuffle-ball-change is beyond the understanding of this reviewer. The precision of so many animals on such a relatively small stage was highly impressive. Oh yes, the rest of the cast sang and danced a little too.

  • SPAMALOT !!

Was a fantastic show!! hope it comes back every year.
