Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.

Monty Python's Spamalot Background

Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.

I have wanted to see Spamalot for a while, so when I heard it was coming to the Pantages, I couldn't NOT go! I'm so glad I did! The entire cast was amazing and talented, the sets very expensive (especially that forest), and the songs funny and wonderful. So happy I went, and if they ever return, I will definitely go again and bring three friends with me!

act 1 was great , act 2 drifted off script and had little to do with monty pythons holy grail. seemed a bit derogatory toward gays and jews.

  • Fair and average with some good moments

by jmtolerico on 3/4/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5

I didnt dislike the show but I wasnt thrilled by it. There was good singing and some good lines but overall it just lacked incredibly funny moments and was stitched together in a make-shift way. The actors were fine but the script seemed to be lacking the punch I was looking for in a comedy. I just can't recommend it, but I wouldnt avoid it either.

For being my first time going to the theater and watching a Broadway show. I was really iffy about it, but seeing this show changed my hole mind about theatrical arts. I became a fan after seeing this show!

  • Spamalot left a lot to be desired.

I saw the touring show of Spamalot in LA/Pantages after seeing the Broadway version 2 months after it opened in NY. The Bway out-shined the traveling show by far. The energy on stage for the B'way version was 10 times greater than in the touring show, so much so that my friend who hates Python and joined me for the Bway show could not stop praising it. To me, the traveling version was flat. And a B or C level celebrity would have helped this version's energy level significiantly. That was part of the glory of the the Bway show, a couple of true comedians that can carry a show. However, my mother who joined me at Pantages and saw it for the first time probably did not notice a significant lack of energy and enthusiasm by those on stage or in the audience and seemed to enjoy it nonetheless. We have seen many shows that had a "touring cast" that left me more impressed than this one. If possible, see the Bway version instead, but if that is out of the question any time soon, this is an "average" substitute.

  • Spamalot was a Lotta fun!

by XtieHere on 3/3/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Being a Monty Python fan, I expected silliness and brevity in the acts. But this was a solid two hours of fun and witt that surpassed my expectations.

  • One of the most fun plays I've ever been to

by PrincessofIce on 3/2/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

This play was EXTREMELY fun! They followed the movie pretty closely (they did take a couple jokes out and the Black Knight scene when he gets his legs chopped off was awkward, but it's a play) and their costumes were really spot on. The Lady of the Lake was added on, but it was a very fun addition, especially since she was a sassy black lady haha. The self awareness that they were a play was hysterical!!! There were some modern spins to it, but also very fun. If you are a monty python fan (or even if you're not), go see it!!

  • A fun romp, though not my best Spamalot

by marywb on 3/2/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

I think the best thing about this performance was the audience - they were fired up! The laughs were plentiful, and the cast was clearly playing to the energy. Arthur was unfortunately a bit lackluster in this tour. I don't think I needed to have "star power" there (a la John O'Hurley), but certainly someone with a bit more verve.

  • Fantasic!

What a great production! Very well done! I'd love to see it again! I laughed so hard I had tears. I've been singing and laughing since.

  • Spamalot on tour was the best!

by AimeeCN on 3/2/12Pantages Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Oh my goodness! Where to start? I have seen many shows and this was simply amazing. Almost immediately you feel the great, upbeat vibe from the cast and orchestra. I don't have any negative comments about this show. It was my first time seeing Spamalot and I was not let down. Perfect casting and directing! My boyfriend, friend, and I could not stop laughing... we're pretty sure we made a couple leave or change seats because we were laughing so hard. The songs were to die for! Diva's Lament, You Wont Succeed on Broadway, The Song That Goes Like This, and I'm All Alone were some of my favorites. And it was icing on the cake when the cast members came out and socialized after their performance even though they have been going and going and have barely had time to rest! We really appreciated that. Like I said, everything was great! All around was a great show, one of my favorites for sure. I hope I get to see the members of this cast and members of the orchestra again in the future because they are so very talented! If you don't go see this show, you are missing out on a lot of fun!
