Minnesota Wild History

The state of Minnesota was without an NHL franchise for seven years after the 1993 departure of the North Stars. That void was filled when the city of Saint Paul landed the Wild as an expansion team in 2000. Hall of Famer Jacques Lemaire took over as the franchise's first head coach.

The Wild advanced to the Western Conference Final in 2003 behind the play of right wing Marián Gáborík, and has gone on to post a winning record in almost every season since. Starting with the 2012-2013 season, Minnesota reached the postseason six consecutive times.

Center Mikko Koivu spent his entire NHL career with the Wild and is the franchise's all-time leader in games played, points and assists. In 2022, the Wild retired Koivu's jersey, the first player in franchise history to have a jersey retired.

  • great game, terrible food

by AofNM on 3/16/25Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 3 out of 5

The Wild vs Rangers game was great! Fun to watch. All the special effects, music, lights, etc are so fun too. The food I picked this time was awful - I ordered a chicken sandwich from the Grill place where they sell puckles. It was burnt and tasted disgusting. For $15 I would expect something edible. The parking was fine and I'm impressed with the people who direct parking - lots of craziness, especially after the game when everyone is leaving at the same time. As an ally, I was glad to see that the Wild supports LGBT people. Great to see them represented there at the game. Especially with the current state of politics.

  • A great night out

by Emily on 3/14/25Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

A well organized event with helpful staff and plenty of food options. A little on the pricey side but nothing out of the norm for a stadium. Bonus that it was a GREAT game by the Wild.

Just wanted to say what a great experience I had attending my first Pro hockey game! Getting tickets and using them were easy!

  • Music not too loud

by Darryl L.A. on 3/5/25Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

I know it’s Minnesota; but, the crowd knew and live hockey. The arena was very nice and staff very helpful and nice. Almost the entire arena came to watch hockey. My Bruins lost; but, I loved the experience.

  • Wonderful first

by Rw on 2/11/25Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

This was our very first pro hockey game. Entry went very smoothly. All the staff was friendly. Great seats. Would love to go to another one… probably next season.

  • The Tickets Rocked

by DP on 1/11/25Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

I have been to Wild games many times before, but not for a couple of years. I had never bought the tickets online before but buying the tickets was pretty straight forward and with the app getting in to the arena was extremely easy. Planning on going again soon.

  • Family Wild Night

Entry to arena was quick and easy. Beverage and food options plentiful. Loved the game.

  • Excellent time!

We had a great time seeing the Wild game - every employee we encountered was extremely nice and helpful Will gladly attend again when in the Twin Cities

  • Great view but chilly

by Ty on 1/1/25Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Loved the bar top seating. Great view too! Only thing i noticed was the draft is pretty chilly and cold. It would be a great idea to dress a little warmer if buying these seats. I'll definitely be back in that area again.

  • Good venue, good location, not good seats

by Tom G on 1/1/25Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 3 out of 5

Been to the X many times for games & concerts. Great building, good sightlines, and good staff. But I had the most uncomfortable seats that I have ever sat in. We paid a decent amount to to sit in the lower bowl for a Wild game (9 rows from the glass) for a birthday gift. These seats were smaller than "regular"seats, so we were uncomfortable the whole night. The seats behind us and 2 seats over were all standard seats, so no idea why they couldn't do the same. I discovered that we were in an area where the seats are movable, but no reason they were different sizes. So before spending big money for tickets, check the location!!

  • Best seats at a wild game ever

by HockeyFan97 on 12/26/24Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Had really great seats…best I’ve ever had. Great game and the experience was easy.

  • Good Seats, but Uncomfortable

by ANG36 on 12/19/24Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

The seats that we had for the game gave us a good view of the ice, but compared to other stadiums and arena's that we have been to for sporting events the seats seemed really cramped.

  • XCel Energy Arena

by Danque on 12/18/24Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 3 out of 5

While our time at the back to back games was fun the seats we purchased were not as requested. My sister in law is on oxygen and cannot do many stairs. I explained this to Curtis at the Arena ticket office and was assured we wouldn’t have to climb a lot of stairs. The rows started at 10 where we came in but our seats were in row 3 both nights. Not a lot of stairs for some but a lot for us. Seats should have been in row 10 or 9. Customer Service was very good getting us a wheelchair for my sister in law and got us to our section. If you need special seating the salespeople need to be more aware of how those seats can be accessed. Other than that we had a good time

  • Gus got chased

by Brasko 13 on 12/15/24Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Drove 7 hours and spent a Wack of change to see Flurry but Gus was starting. But my hope was complete when Mcdavid and the oilers chased Gus after the second. Finally saw the legend in the third. Great people and amazing staff. A highly recommended event for all

  • I had a great time

by Connie on 12/6/24Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

I had a great time and the Wild won can't get any better than that .

  • Wild hockey

Xcel energy Center awesome place to watch hockey great atmosphere great people had a great time there definitely going back.

  • It was a good game to watch

by Slim on 11/17/24Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

It was a good game, fun to watch, and the team I root for won. The arena staff that I interacted with were friendly and helpful. The venue was clean and appeared to be well kept. Two things that detracted from the experience: 1. No longer a ticket stub to save for my collection. Not a deal breaker, but I do have ticket stubs in my collection from sporting events and concerts going back to the 1980s, and I miss adding those to my collection. 2. The venue has gone cashless. I feel that, as a U.S. citizen, I should be able to pay with U.S. currency for purchases I make, especially for those purchases I make that are under $100.00.

  • A great time

by Pokey on 11/4/24Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Once again we drove from out of state to attend a wild hockey game at Excel Energy arena. The Wild are a favorite team of ours and this time they were playing our most favorite team so we wore jerseys from the visiting team and again found that the Minnesota fans are extremely accommodating and friendly and other than one single "go home"shout everything was great. The facility has plenty of concourse walking room a whole lot of choices for both food and drink and generally had ushers at every aisle to assist with seating or keeping folks from going down the steps when the puck was in play. It was a positive experience all around, the arena was close to full with excited home team fans, the Wild played a good game and won, and there are four large Gates to exit from any part of the arena. We will be back again as we enjoy watching the team play and we enjoy the facility.

  • Tipping is Expensive

by Matt on 10/14/24Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 3 out of 5

I don't hate tipping. But asking for a minimum of 15% on all items purchased is too much. I am sorry, but $4 tip to have someone hand me two cans of 2 beers is too much. The beer is already too expensive. I am happy to tip $2. Tipping $2 to have someone hand me a box of popcorn is too much. You need to lower it to 10% minimum - that is what Target Field and others do. The tipping at Xcel is expensive and awkward. Also, you ran out of popcorn before the start of the third period. Disappointing.

  • Great Wild game

by Ctrain on 9/30/24Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

This is for the Minnesota Wild/ Winnipeg Jets preseason game that took place at the Xcel Energy Center Friday night September 27th. This was an excellent game, high scoring and all fans got a Minnesota Wild magnetic schedule as they exited the arena after the game. Great sight lines to view the game no matter where you sit. Will be back for another game in the near future.
