Miami Hurricanes Football History

The Miami Hurricanes are a college football powerhouse with five national championships, nine conference titles and over 40 bowl game appearances, including six high-profile Orange Bowl wins. Founded in 1926, the Miami Hurricanes were independent for much of their existence until the team joined the Big East in 1991. Since 2004, Miami has been a part of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Hurricanes rosters have featured future Pro Football Hall of Famers such as quarterback Jim Kelly, wide receivers Michael Irvin and Andre Johnson, center Jim Otto, safety Ed Reed, linebacker Ray Lewis and defensive tackles Warren Sapp and Cortez Kennedy. Miami has also fielded two Heisman Trophy winners, quarterbacks Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and Gino Torretta in 1992. Several of Miami's most successful head coaches, including Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson, went on to coach in the NFL.

The Hurricanes have played in several of college football's greatest games. On New Year's Day 1984, Miami cemented its first of five national championships by defeating the heavily favored Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Orange Bowl. The team secured their second national title in 1987 with an undefeated season that culminated in the Hurricanes dominating the Oklahoma Sooners in the Orange Bowl. In November 1991, Miami won the “Wide Right I” game against Florida State after the Seminoles' kicker missed a game-winning field goal and advanced to the Orange Bowl, where they shut out the Cornhuskers.

The Hurricanes have in-state rivalries with the University of Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles as well as heated intra-division opposition from Virginia Tech. The feud between Miami and Florida State, which dates back to 1951, has been particularly fierce since the ’80s, as the two teams have taken turns spoiling each other's championship aspirations. During seasons when all three Florida teams play against one another, the squad with the most wins takes home the Florida Cup.

  • Amazing!

    by FSUgirl001 on 10/11/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first college football game and I had an unforgettable time with my best friend, its so much more exciting in real life than over the tv. Only dissapointing part were a few fights that occured during the game. It was a very tense game and the FSU fans were greatly out numbered n some UM and FSU fans got very out of order. But other than that everyone around me was very nice even if they were UM fans and I had an awesome night :))

It was a great time and sold out!!!! The traffic wasn't that bad as well.

It was a good game, which made the seats a lot better. The pricing for the value wasn't great. Nose bleed is nose bleed no matter which way you cut it.

  • NOLES thrashed the Canes!!!

by BlackKeysandKOL on 10/11/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

With the exception of some disorderly fans trying to start fights leaving the stadium, the game was awesome!!!

  • A Disaster

by CaneFan on 10/11/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 1 out of 5

This was a debacle of epic proportions. Hurricanes fans deserve better than this type of humiliating defeat on our home turf. Disgraceful.

  • Standing the entire game from the upper deck

by Caneguy on 10/11/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 1 out of 5

As a UM alumni and first time participant of UM at the former stadium known as Joe Robbie, I was very disappointed with the atmosphere and overall experience of watching the UM-FSU game. My three seats were in the 400 section in the upper rows that had a wonderful view if everyone was seated. Unfortunately, many of the fans below us stood the entire game so we had to stand. If the stadium security did their job and asked people to sit down, then all other people above would be able to enjoy the game. For me to go to another UM game in that stadium, I will be sure to purchase Club Seats so the standing, drunks would not affect my desire to watch the game from my nice seat.

  • horrific event for families

by mblc on 10/11/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 1 out of 5

I am soo glad this opportunity is here! Dont know who is going to see this but i was actually thinking of writing to someone myself. Myself and husband and two children attended this event as part of family weekend for U Miami. While the game and all the pomp was wondrerful, the crowd and beer sales were atrocious!!! I had to spend 3/4 of the game covering my daughters' ears and was in fear of a large scale fight breaking out throughout the entire event. I saw young adults falling down stairs and being helped out because they had consumed soo much alcohol, they couldnt string two words together yet the beer kept flowing until the 3rd quarter. As a recommendation, I would suggest a section for the families of students so that they can attend the game and enjoy it without having to worry and witness and hear the absolute ABOMINABLE language and atrocities that we had to endure. To think this cost $230! Not to mention, my husband's sunglasses and hat were stolen out of our car in the lot as well. Other than this, our weekend visit to our daughter's school was pehnominal!

The parking was so horrible I am now seeling my remaining tickets to any Sun Life event. It was unbelievably disorganized. NEVER again!

  • FSU WAS AWESOME

    by Teddy62 on 10/11/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

tickets arrived as schedule. which inlcuded parking. BUT, more information should have been provided. we were told the gates opened at 4:00p, but the gates really opened as early as 2:00 and the UM fans knew this as they were the ones in the closest to the stadium. when we arrived at 430 the lots were mobbed. we did use our ticket but were in the farthest lot possible. our seats were the 2nd from the top and they were the best view from the 50 yard line. it was a great win. the um fans were obnoxious as usual.

  • Canes showed no Swagga!

    by Tata01 on 10/11/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 2 out of 5

Canes did not show the SWAGGA they invented. It was embarrassing.

  • great stadium

by rudyfsu on 10/11/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

Beautiful stadium, plenty of parking. Die hard fans everywhere. Home team fans are sore losers though. They will throw ice at you when they are down 45-17.

  • Great game horrible fans

by jfroe on 10/11/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 2 out of 5

This was a great game but Miami Fans are horrible. I have been to plenty of college games but have never had stuff thrown at me because i was going for the other team. Security is horrible there. They did not do anything when they saw people throwing stuff and fighting. No wonder why there are so many fights at that stadium.

Biggest Flop in Hurricane History. Randy can't coach, motivate or lead.

  • Awesome

    by mmf305 on 9/9/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

The game was crazy cool! I loved the fact that is was pretty much full and that is what the canes need...support! The team displayed a very much anticipated strengh and hope that it continues all over the season. I am not at all happy that jacori was taken out at the begining of the third quarter...I understand that most of us did wanted to see his performance for most of the game. But whatever, overall THE BEST BEGINING OF THE SEASON! Good luck this Saturday!

  • Outstanding game

by HUBBERT on 9/7/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

  • Miami Hurricanes Awesome !!!

by SilverSlade on 9/6/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 4 out of 5

The football contest wasn't all that great. But what can you expect, the UM was playing a Division I-A school. The Florida A&M band is considered one of the best in the country. Their (FAMU Band) halftime performance was the bomb. If you like college football, the UM typically provides an exciting game.

The Miami Hurricane's put on quite a show! Everything about it was exciting - from their spectacular entrance to their awesome passing game! They played the last down as if it was the first! They looked crisp and sharp! And...let's not forget those amazing Miami Cheerleaders! They kept the crowd going and celebrated every one of the touchdowns with their impressive tumbling and scary stunting! Don't miss the next game! Go 'Canes!
