Miami Hurricanes Football History

The Miami Hurricanes are a college football powerhouse with five national championships, nine conference titles and over 40 bowl game appearances, including six high-profile Orange Bowl wins. Founded in 1926, the Miami Hurricanes were independent for much of their existence until the team joined the Big East in 1991. Since 2004, Miami has been a part of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Hurricanes rosters have featured future Pro Football Hall of Famers such as quarterback Jim Kelly, wide receivers Michael Irvin and Andre Johnson, center Jim Otto, safety Ed Reed, linebacker Ray Lewis and defensive tackles Warren Sapp and Cortez Kennedy. Miami has also fielded two Heisman Trophy winners, quarterbacks Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and Gino Torretta in 1992. Several of Miami's most successful head coaches, including Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson, went on to coach in the NFL.

The Hurricanes have played in several of college football's greatest games. On New Year's Day 1984, Miami cemented its first of five national championships by defeating the heavily favored Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Orange Bowl. The team secured their second national title in 1987 with an undefeated season that culminated in the Hurricanes dominating the Oklahoma Sooners in the Orange Bowl. In November 1991, Miami won the “Wide Right I” game against Florida State after the Seminoles' kicker missed a game-winning field goal and advanced to the Orange Bowl, where they shut out the Cornhuskers.

The Hurricanes have in-state rivalries with the University of Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles as well as heated intra-division opposition from Virginia Tech. The feud between Miami and Florida State, which dates back to 1951, has been particularly fierce since the ’80s, as the two teams have taken turns spoiling each other's championship aspirations. During seasons when all three Florida teams play against one another, the squad with the most wins takes home the Florida Cup.

  • Fun for all

by ProfessorTurner on 11/8/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 4 out of 5

Enjoyed the game. Beautiful stadium. My only complaints would be they started to run out of concessions in the 2nd quarter and some of the gate and parking staff could have been a little more polite.

  • Game good parking nightmare

by Caneiac on 10/25/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 2 out of 5

The game was exciting however the parking was a nightmare. I was contemplating getting season tickets but this event has helped me make up my mind to not have to deal with the parking situation. I was next to someone who was blaring loud music with profanity. I won't be returning to any games there after this year.

the event was great and well organized. Recommendations for improvement. 1- I found it hard to figure out the seat location and price prior to purchase so I got the cheap seats

  • Very organized stadium

    by ssimpson217 on 10/25/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

I was really impressed at how easy the stadium was to get to, how easy it was to park, and to get in and out of the stadium. It only took us about 15 minutes to get out of the parking lot after the game and back on the road. Everything was really organized and it didn't take long to do anything. The line to get in thru the security check was fast and efficient, lines to get into the restrooms were very short or non-existent, and the exit out of the stadium back into the parking lot was fast and smooth. We had "nose-bleed" seats and they were still great seats. We had a great view of the game. All the staff were very friendly, polite, and helpful. The game was a great and fun experience!

  • Florida State Seminoles Football

Great game at Sun Life Stadium where the Seminoles of the Great Florida State University came to play big time in prime time.

  • What do you expect it's a game vs FSU!

    by quota10 on 10/20/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

Anyone complaining about the parking, the traffic, the overall craziness around the stadium needs to calm down.. This is a national/instate rivalry! What do you expect?! People are going to drink and party that much harder when it's a game like this. Also, you can't head to the game 1 hour before and expect there to be plenty of empty parking spaces and the roads to be clear. I left for the game at 2:30 from South Miami, which got me there right when the gates opened at 3. The traffic was fine. The atmosphere was great and as with any big time rivalry people got crazy! If you want a game that is less crazy, goto the FAMU or Maryland games, not FSU or VT.

  • No More 'Canes Football Games

    by MMB35 on 10/13/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 1 out of 5

This is the worst experience I've ever had in attending any football game. It had nothing to do with the fact that I'm a Miami Hurricanes fan and that they lost the game that evening. It did have everything to do with the following: - no car traffic control into the stadium, it was slow, and totally chaotic. Once we were a block away from the stadium, it took over an hour to reach the entrance to the parking. - our $35 prepaid parking pass was not honored because the lot was full ! - we were instead told to park outside the parking lot, over a sidewalk, and leave the car on a steep incline - people were drunk all around us in the stands, and fights and arguments broke out throughout the game - walking through the parking lot to get to the stadium, we had beer sprayed and spilled on us by drunken (and stoned) tailgaters as we walked by them. (It was sad to see little kids following their drunken parents around.) - people were drunk all around us in the stands and arguments & fights broke out throughout the game - walking through the parking lot at the end of the game, was like walking through a war zone. There was uneaten food, filthy containers, and broken beer bottles everywhere. Nothing was picked up by these tailgaters. You had to be careful everywhere you walked. These are the filthiest, rowdiest spectators i have ever seen.

  • UM/FSU Game would have been better if UM won.

Great Atmosphere & overall a fun time but would have liked it more if the 'Canes won!

  • two thumbs down!!!

by Anonymous on 10/12/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 1 out of 5

The WORST home game I have ever been to. I have missed 3 home games in 8 years and this is by far the worst game I have ever attended. The team played timidly from the start and had no urgency.

  • by Anonymous on 10/12/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 1 out of 5

Terrible event, had an awful time. I wouldn't recommend it to a friend

  • Miami Sucked

    by napalm86 on 10/11/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 3 out of 5

The seats were awesome, not too bad priced for an online venue. My team played like poo other than that it was an amazing opportunity. :)

  • FSU trashed UM

by creoledoc on 10/11/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

Nothing's better than watching FSU beat the hell out of Miami. It's been a long time coming!

  • Canes stunk it up!!

by TomFLA on 10/11/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

The crowd was awesome! One of the largest the Canes have had since moving stadiums. Too bad our team didnt show up!!! FSU made Miami look like a bunch of pop warner players out on the field. I was embarassed to call myself a fan! I hope Shannon wakes up and gets a new QB in there and while he is at it, how bout you teach the defense how to tackle!!!!! I hope things turn around and the Canes can get to the ACC championship but the way things looked on saturday you would think that is far fetched!! Good Luck Canes! Please put 50 on Duke next week!!

  • by Anonymous on 10/11/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

Sad and mad team lost but had fun seeing friends. Tailgating was very enjoyable. Got to game early, fan interaction was great, and avoided some traffic.

  • Terrible Game

by Caneslegend on 10/11/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 3 out of 5

I will not be spending money on the Hurricanes anytime soon if they are going to play like that. If Randy Shannon doesn't think winning is a big deal then I don't think it is a big deal for me to go. Tell that President Donna...Get a winner back because you won't sell out another game with that team.
