Miami Hurricanes Football History
The Miami Hurricanes are a college football powerhouse with five national championships, nine conference titles and over 40 bowl game appearances, including six high-profile Orange Bowl wins. Founded in 1926, the Miami Hurricanes were independent for much of their existence until the team joined the Big East in 1991. Since 2004, Miami has been a part of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Hurricanes rosters have featured future Pro Football Hall of Famers such as quarterback Jim Kelly, wide receivers Michael Irvin and Andre Johnson, center Jim Otto, safety Ed Reed, linebacker Ray Lewis and defensive tackles Warren Sapp and Cortez Kennedy. Miami has also fielded two Heisman Trophy winners, quarterbacks Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and Gino Torretta in 1992. Several of Miami's most successful head coaches, including Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson, went on to coach in the NFL.
The Hurricanes have played in several of college football's greatest games. On New Year's Day 1984, Miami cemented its first of five national championships by defeating the heavily favored Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Orange Bowl. The team secured their second national title in 1987 with an undefeated season that culminated in the Hurricanes dominating the Oklahoma Sooners in the Orange Bowl. In November 1991, Miami won the “Wide Right I” game against Florida State after the Seminoles' kicker missed a game-winning field goal and advanced to the Orange Bowl, where they shut out the Cornhuskers.
The Hurricanes have in-state rivalries with the University of Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles as well as heated intra-division opposition from Virginia Tech. The feud between Miami and Florida State, which dates back to 1951, has been particularly fierce since the ’80s, as the two teams have taken turns spoiling each other's championship aspirations. During seasons when all three Florida teams play against one another, the squad with the most wins takes home the Florida Cup.

GREAT GAME GOOD ATMOSPHERE. CANES WIN IN LAST MINUTE THRILLER
I've been to tons of Canes game, but this was the best one cause I experienced it through my 5 year old Son, It was Anthony first time going to a Miami Hurricane game, he got to experience the tailgating and the atmosphere that we "the fan" bring to the game. We had a blast!!! Its All About The lll_lll !!!!
The decision by UM (Donna Shalala) to leave the Orange Bowl and move to Dolphin/Joe Robbie/Landshark/Sunlife/Corporation-of-the-day Stadium was a HUGE, tragic mistake. The energy is almost zero for UM games now. The stadium is always over half-empty. You can't hear the student section or the Band of the Hour anywhere, unless you're close to that section. The stadium seats are at such a low angle and there is 25 yards between the first row of seats and the field, so you feel like you're 1/2 mile from the action. To top it off, the stadium is 28 freakin' miles from campus, so no wonder student attendance has plummeted. The OB, on the other hand, was intimate, tight, and always packed. The energy and vibe was SPECTACULAR and exciting. UM games at Sunlife Stadium are boring as heck. They will NEVER fill the place. Never.
Althought a little chilly, we had a great time at the UM game. Freshman QB Morris and Running back Lamar Miller had stellar days, but more importantly they won the game. Go Canes!!!
Great fun and unforgettable! Must repeat again! ;o)
Good win for the Canes, but if it wasn't for the terrible referees we would have won by a larger margin.
I did not go nor would I ever go to that incredibly poorly designed stadium in NW Dade, however many times its name is changed to hide its defects. You tore down the Orange Bowl. The Orange Bowl *was* UMiami football. It was history. It was tradition. It should have received historic preservation status. It was like filling in Biscayne Bay and putting a golf course on it, and tearing down Stiltsville in the process. It was said that it would cost $100 million just to bring the Orange Bowl up to standard, and it would constantly need repair. So, more than $1 billion was used to tear down the Orange Bowl, and build a monstrosity in its place to forever cover over and destroy even its memory. The cameras at the UM-Maryland game attempted not to show the vast number of empty seats. They will always remain empty throughout the years. I will never attend one, though for over 20 years I held multiple season tickets for the 'Canes at the Orange Bowl. I go to away games to cheer on the 'Canes whenever I can, but never again a home game, as long as it is played as far away from campus that it might as well be an away game. The parking expense alone keeps droves away. And we signed a multi year lease to play at that monstrosity, where even a full crowd can barely be heard on the field, and where no one low can see because they are low, and no one high can see because they are in Broward. So players want to come to UMiami to play in a pro stadium? Really? How many more would come just to say they got to play in the Orange Bowl? But they never will be able to. And UMiami football and football recruiting will suffer from that for many many years to come.
Great game, great weather. DO not like the way you handle parking!!!
WE WON!!! WHOOO HOOOOOWE WON!!! WHOOO HOOOOOWE WON!!! WHOOO HOOOOO
It was my first time attending a Canes game and I enjoyed it immensely and will go again!
Great Time. Great Team, Great Game, it was greaaaatttttt to the very end
Good game, just make sure you're a UM fan or you will get picked on all day.
i was disappointed on how few people attended, but the game was great
I've never been to a live football game and it was great. had lots of fun
this game started out boring but rapidly turned into a nail bitter I really enjoyed the crowd noises and the whole college atmosphere was amazing!!
what a game! Miami had it in them to win but the turps had the upper hand throughout most of the game. It was not until the last minute or so that the U got the act together, offensively, and with the support of the cheering fans pulled a 26-20 victory. Weather was great and my kids had a blast!
You can tell that it was family weekend. There was not enough food by half time we weren't able to find food...I don't know what happen.
We ha a wonderful time, we suffer a little but at the end UM won, we enjoyed it. Thank you.
Awesome game, perfect weather, couldn't ask for more!
