Miami Hurricanes Football History

The Miami Hurricanes are a college football powerhouse with five national championships, nine conference titles and over 40 bowl game appearances, including six high-profile Orange Bowl wins. Founded in 1926, the Miami Hurricanes were independent for much of their existence until the team joined the Big East in 1991. Since 2004, Miami has been a part of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Hurricanes rosters have featured future Pro Football Hall of Famers such as quarterback Jim Kelly, wide receivers Michael Irvin and Andre Johnson, center Jim Otto, safety Ed Reed, linebacker Ray Lewis and defensive tackles Warren Sapp and Cortez Kennedy. Miami has also fielded two Heisman Trophy winners, quarterbacks Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and Gino Torretta in 1992. Several of Miami's most successful head coaches, including Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson, went on to coach in the NFL.

The Hurricanes have played in several of college football's greatest games. On New Year's Day 1984, Miami cemented its first of five national championships by defeating the heavily favored Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Orange Bowl. The team secured their second national title in 1987 with an undefeated season that culminated in the Hurricanes dominating the Oklahoma Sooners in the Orange Bowl. In November 1991, Miami won the “Wide Right I” game against Florida State after the Seminoles' kicker missed a game-winning field goal and advanced to the Orange Bowl, where they shut out the Cornhuskers.

The Hurricanes have in-state rivalries with the University of Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles as well as heated intra-division opposition from Virginia Tech. The feud between Miami and Florida State, which dates back to 1951, has been particularly fierce since the ’80s, as the two teams have taken turns spoiling each other's championship aspirations. During seasons when all three Florida teams play against one another, the squad with the most wins takes home the Florida Cup.

  • Jacory is the Bomb!

    by BigChief33 on 10/11/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 4 out of 5

I know it is hard to really get motivated to play a sub-division team....However, I am very grateful to be a Miami Hurricane alumnus....I believe that Randy Shannon will take this team back to National Championship status. All of the alumni are in his corner, he has the support of the faculty and administration, and he has community support. Go Canes!

  • UM vs. Florida A&M

by MissCheerRed on 10/11/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent seats! Although I was in Landshark Stadium's upper level, I had a great view of the game & of Florida A&M's AWESOME band. Food was overpriced but otherwise we had wonderful time. UM won the game, which was the icing on the cake.

The FAMU band was great! UM band was fun, too. The game was fun to watch, although I'm kind of new at this, so I don't always understand what is happening. I was in the first few rows of the upper deck and I could see the game just fine. It was fun to enjoy the game with the crowd.

  • UofM and FAMU football game

    by Displeased2 on 10/11/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 3 out of 5

The announcers were to loud and poor timing of playing of music. Here we were in the presence of one of the world’s greatest college bands , FAMU, and every time they went to play they could not be enjoyed because of the noise. I know we came for the game but when nothing was happening on the field was a good time to enjoy either U of M or FAMU's bands. And what a poor microphone the announcer was given who presented FAMU's band. Sad is a kind understatement about the activities associated to the football game, from a disappointed paying fan.

  • Jacory made it right!

    by Cristy333 on 10/6/09Landshark - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

What a game from the silence at critical moments to the ridiciously loud student section. Got tickets week of the game in section 106 row (4) 6-8. Greatest section ever. best game for UM @ Landshark statidum.

  • Exiting

by rooouuu on 10/6/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 3 out of 5

I think the parking and exiting after the game could go a little smoother and faster. I've been to a couple of games in Miami and felt as though as many games that are played there, someone would have thought of either faster or easier ways of exiting with your vehicles.

  • Great Time

by rooouuu on 10/6/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

Even though my team lost, it was the best college football game I've been to. The entertainment was great as were the fans. I've been to other OU games such as OU vs LSU and USC and the fans there were rude and really just not nice.

  • by massachusettswilkie on 10/6/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 4 out of 5

Great game! Great victory! My overall experience attending my first Miami game was great. Complaints - too many drunk fans where I sat. Too many vulgar fans where I sat. The profanity was outrageous & it was not only directed at the Sooners, but to other fans of the Hurricanes as well. It still surprises me that people believed their behaviors are untouchable because they bought a ticket to the game. No consideration for anyone else. Asked politely to sit down - NO! Many stood when they didn't have too - no one standing in front of them & refused to sit.

  • happy with The "UUUUUUUUUUU" Football game/

by johnthenurse on 10/5/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 4 out of 5

I was happy with the game the facility is clean and fun. The only thig is that the food and beverages in side the stadium were outrageous. I neede a mortgage: $16 to by a double jack/ pepsi (did not have coke) and a loaded hot dog $8, 5" pizza (papa john's) rip off and lacking taste. The parking lot was clean and frendly for a tailgate party.

  • A sea of Orange!!

    by Miami68 on 10/5/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

The Miami Oklahoma game was intense all the way through to the final seconds. Miami started out shaky with two interceptions but then took control. The crowd was very loud but respectful - some Oklahoma fans were sitting a few rows from us and no one bothered them. That made me proud of my Univ of Miami. This game was a classic "U" game that we have been waiting for.

  • Oklahoma at Miami

by FranW on 10/5/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 4 out of 5

the game was almost too exciting for this 70 year old man. Loved the passion, pagentry and energy shown by the 'U''s fans. Did not like the trash, broken bottles and lord knows what all left in W22 parking area. I had to walk thru that area to get to my car. it was as bad as when Andrew devistated the area of SW Dade.
