Miami Hurricanes Football History

The Miami Hurricanes are a college football powerhouse with five national championships, nine conference titles and over 40 bowl game appearances, including six high-profile Orange Bowl wins. Founded in 1926, the Miami Hurricanes were independent for much of their existence until the team joined the Big East in 1991. Since 2004, Miami has been a part of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Hurricanes rosters have featured future Pro Football Hall of Famers such as quarterback Jim Kelly, wide receivers Michael Irvin and Andre Johnson, center Jim Otto, safety Ed Reed, linebacker Ray Lewis and defensive tackles Warren Sapp and Cortez Kennedy. Miami has also fielded two Heisman Trophy winners, quarterbacks Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and Gino Torretta in 1992. Several of Miami's most successful head coaches, including Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson, went on to coach in the NFL.

The Hurricanes have played in several of college football's greatest games. On New Year's Day 1984, Miami cemented its first of five national championships by defeating the heavily favored Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Orange Bowl. The team secured their second national title in 1987 with an undefeated season that culminated in the Hurricanes dominating the Oklahoma Sooners in the Orange Bowl. In November 1991, Miami won the “Wide Right I” game against Florida State after the Seminoles' kicker missed a game-winning field goal and advanced to the Orange Bowl, where they shut out the Cornhuskers.

The Hurricanes have in-state rivalries with the University of Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles as well as heated intra-division opposition from Virginia Tech. The feud between Miami and Florida State, which dates back to 1951, has been particularly fierce since the ’80s, as the two teams have taken turns spoiling each other's championship aspirations. During seasons when all three Florida teams play against one another, the squad with the most wins takes home the Florida Cup.

The game was incredible, huge upset. Non stop action, and the game went into overtime.

the canes defense was confused the entirte game. the tigers were playing a no huddle game and at least by the 2nd qtr the coaches of the canes should have adapted there players, granted the players are young that is why tou have coaches for every aspect of the game. the tiger receivers were open all game, no pressurfe on the qb. that is why i was not surprised in ot the tigers scored the winning td, bad coaching, as amatter of fact very bad. i am a big canes fan and i was hurt, disappointed.

That stadium is no Orange Bowl. The seats are so far from the field and I was on the 10th row 40 yard line. The stadium has no character and way to far from the University.

  • Don't purchase these seats 140 Row 2

by DebDJD on 10/25/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 1 out of 5

We were in Section 140 Row 2, Seats 11 and 12. The team put up blue pop up tents (about 10) along the sidelines which made the viewing of the field terrible as they were an obstruction to the site line.

  • Go Canes!

Excellent game, great seats, enthusiastic crowd and a beautiful Miami night!

  • by 1GWEN on 10/13/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

THE GAME WAS TERRIFIC, WHAT A BLOW-OUT. BOTH BANDS PERFORMED GREAT. THE ONLY THING I DIDNOT LIKE THAT UM USED MICROPHONES FOR THE BAND ON THE FIELD AND OFF THE FIELD. THIS GAME IS THE ONLY GAME OF UM THAT WAS NOT ON TV. WHICH IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ,WITH THIS BIG BLOW-OUT WIN.

  • by deuces on 10/12/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 4 out of 5

The game was exciting and interesting to see. Halftime performance was great by FAMU rattlers band. Never knew the hurricanes mascot had soul when he came over and danced to a selection played by Famu band.

  • It's All About The U!

    by BigRay305 on 10/12/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

No matter how they play it's all about the U! Go Canes!

  • Unforgettable, Unbelievable, Awesome!!!!!!!

by SPICYMAL on 10/12/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

Neither band failed to deliver skill, talent and showmanship. The sounds from the muscians, and the pagentry of moves, marching, shaking, and swaying made me feel as though I was a participant and not just a spectator. The game was unbelievable as the Canes showed up-and showed out against the Rattlers. Now don't get me wrong FAMU came to play and they have my respect, but it must have been something in the Miami water because the 'U' --"took it to the HOUSE!

  • Marching 100 band Awesome

by MMMincey on 10/12/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

The UM and FAMU game was great. The Marching 100 Band is a must see. I enjoyed the event most of all because a lot of the players and band members are from south Florida it was a great oppourtunity to see them perform.

  • Basic college football game, good halftime

by xtraspeshal on 10/12/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 3 out of 5

The punt return resulting in a goal was a highlight and the halftime band performance from FAMU was great.

  • UM vs FAMU

by SilverSurfer on 10/12/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 4 out of 5

It was a great game, the U is back and better than ever. $25 for parking is a rip-off.

  • FAMU's Marching 100..Enough Said!!!

    by KEKE1995 on 10/12/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 4 out of 5

The game was good, but too hot. FAMU's Marching 100 was awesome. I see why they are the BADDEST band around. They did a tribute to Michael Jackson and to the Hurricanes. Their show is a must see!!!!!

  • THE U vs FAMU

  • UM vs FAMU game was a nice event

    by Gigi318 on 10/12/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first UM game since Landshark became the home field. Parking was easier than I thought it would be. We we almost at the top of section 432, but the view was awesome even without the huge screens. The game was good and the crowd enjoyed watching the bands perform at half time.

  • Hurricanes Game

by masterjack on 10/11/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 4 out of 5

The seats were fabulous in the 100 section. Parking was great to get in and out , which was a surprise. This was my first experience in Land Shark Stadium, which is a nice facility. Missed the electricity of the "Orange Bowl" but so is progress. Thanks for the seat opposite the fabulous FAMU Marching "100" which number almost 500.

  • by Rue5 on 10/11/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 3 out of 5

The game was good. The seats are to close together especially for the price I paid for them. The food and drinks are too expensive. With an event like this money will be made, but what about the people who cannot pay $4.00 for a bottle of water? Advance parking is a joke. The lots are not adequately marked, many people could not find their cars after the game.

  • The band was awesome. A must see.

by Blassam on 10/11/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

The football game was boring. However, Florida A&M's Marching Band was awesome. I would attend again to see the band perform.

  • by Anonymous on 10/11/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

Of course, the actual playing game was mediocre and at times terrible. However, the musicianship of both bands fully compensated for the lack of exciting plays. FAMU's band is a great powerhouse and it's such a pleasure to view them live. Unfortunateky, I don't have the opportunity to watch them all season but I look forward to seeing them when they are here. I hope they will continue with this game every year and PLEASE include the post game concert.
