MEW IN CONCERT:

Danish band Mew mixes arena-ready hooks with dreamy atmospherics to create an infectious sound that gets everyone in attendance rocking. On miniature epics like “Am I Wry? No”, “Special”, and “Making Friends”, the band expertly moves through complex passages and doles out larger-than-life riffs that keep ticket buyers headbanging throughout the night. Lead singer Jonas Bjerre adds pristine tenor vocals and beautiful melodies to perfectly complement the pummeling power and heady atmospherics of the rest of the group. Mew consistently floors audiences around the world with their stunning light shows and flawless musicianship, offering an unparalleled aural and visual experience whenever they tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in the Hellerup suburb of Copenhagen, Denmark, Mew has been a major factor in sowing the seeds of indie rock in their native country since 1994. After gigging around Copenhagen for a few years, the adventurous quartet of Jonas Bjerre (vocals), Johan Wohlert (bass), Silas Utke Graae Jorgensen (drums), and Bo Madsen (guitar) released their 1997 debut album A Triumph for Man. The band burst onto the international scene in 2003 with the album Frengers, winning praise for their combination of operatic production and rock and roll power. Though Wohlert left amicably in 2006 to spend more time with his growing family, the group soldiered on as a trio for 2009’s No More Stories Today…, which embraced a more dance-oriented production style. The bassist returned to the fold in time for their 2015 album + -, though guitarist Madsen subsequently departed. As a three piece, the band continues to rock arenas around the world with their trademark combination of winning hooks, stunning musicianship, and amazing showmanship.

  • MEW explored,,,

by farahang3licgirl on 12/15/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

it was my first time watching concert at Music Box Fonda. i love the place! its so intimate, n even i was there after the door opened, i still cud get spots on d front. well, prob because it was monday. well, anyway,,,it was packed, n d crowd was unbelievable! they are truly Mew's fans. it was kinda long waiting for Mew though. we thought as soon as the door opened, opening band started, but they started at 9PM, only played 5 songs, then we had to wait for..another 30min. for MEW...but it was all worthed. their songs & their performance really lifted me up. not to mention their cool video wall! it was so darn awesome!!! they didnt play my fave. song though...was expecting they played more songs...but overall, it was great. awesome place, great crowd & MEW for being MEW itself...love it! and one more thing, didnt waste tym looking for parking! woohoo!!

  • Mew, best band in the world!

by darkgray on 12/15/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Mew a few months back at the Trubadour and I was having a hard time imagining how they would top it, but they did. They did many songs from the newest album No More Stories, including Silas the Magic Car, which was amazing. Jonas did New Terrain and She Came Home for Christmas with just the piano. There were extended versions of songs, new visuals, and an ending with a talking teddy bear...I was amazed, possibly the best show I've ever seen.

  • Reaching Epic Proportions

by kenzbeard on 12/15/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The show definitely had an alternative progressive rock feel, at times bringing to mind a cross between the musical complexity of Yes and the mesmerizing efficiency of the Cocteau Twins. Stellar musicianship, rapidly changing tempos, soaring vocal harmonies, very tight instrumentation, and a brief acoustic segment prevailed as Mew performed a majority of the new album as well as favorites from their previous releases. The light show was mind boggling. Nightmarish animations and videos were rhythmically synced to crucial segments of their songs. Projections on smaller side screens emphasized a 3D effect against the larger background visuals. Several times the show took on epic proportions. So glad I didn't miss this tour. Awesome.

  • BIG show in a small venue

by courtw on 12/15/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

I'm not sure what was more intense. Mew's incredible set of music, or the haunting visuals projecting behind them. I simply wasn't expecting such a high quality performance in a small venue like the Fonda. The performance was not only moving but an experience. It was performance art at it's finest. I wondered if Mew found the crowd to be quiet, because we were all mesmerized by what we were seeing. I'll will be seeing them again, and bringing everyone I know with me next time.

Mew's entire performance at Henry Fonda Theater was amazing! Period.

  • MEW WAS SO INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They took me on a journey of pure pleasure to the cloud land of care bears. I felt like I was in a mystical land of feather bottom monkey cats and apple faced gerbil children.

  • Mew at Mezzanine

by jimtao on 12/15/09Mezzanine - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

Musically and visually these guys are an absolute treat. The guitar parts are completely and utterly original. The poor singer Jonas , however, just couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. I have seen them 3 other times and didn't really notice, but this time the vocals almost drove me to leave the venue. I also thought that they might play "she Spider" and "8 flew over..." like some other shows on this tour and they didn't. They also didn't play "comforting sounds" to close the show. That is a signature of their shows so I don't know why they dropped it. Bottom line: I will skip their next tour...

  • mew at the music box, hollywood

by emmmarie on 12/15/09The Music Box at the Fonda - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

the band blew my socks off! i wasnt expecting them to be as fantastic as they were live! they had incredible video footage composed of odd characters hat looked like they were from a strange dream, and the rest of the light show was unbelievable. the venue was pretty rad too. we sat in the 2nd row on the balcony seating and it was a perfect view of the stage, and still seemed really close to the band. but i do have to say that music box was not as great as some other venues i have been to in la, but it was a fun place to go to.

  • Amazing.

Mew is always amazing live. Their musicianship is top of the line, and their accompanying video displays are truly breathtaking. I love them so much.

  • mew = awesome

by elenathedhel on 12/14/09Mezzanine - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

mew is one of my favorite bands. don't understand how more people don't about them, but it makes the concert experience great because they can play at a small venue without the pushy crowds.

  • Mew rocked it

by CrazyKittums on 12/14/09Mezzanine - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Parking was the worst, weird area for the building, kind of sketch. Once inside though... it was AMAZING! Great atmosphere, no wait at the bar for drinks. Opening act did really good, Mew was amazing though. Played great songs, and rocked them all! Great visuals to go along with the music.

  • MEW rocked!

by ultimatewoman on 12/14/09Mezzanine - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Great show, great venue. The Mezzanine was the perfect size to make the band seem close and intimate, but big enough to feel like it was rockin! The sound system was fabulous.

  • Mew - Great Show

by Vraver on 12/14/09Mezzanine - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Outstanding show. The band played great - solid and tight- and overall good sound. Great light show and projected animations as well. If you liked the CD's you will love the show.

  • Mew

by DevonTD on 12/14/09Mezzanine - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

The opening band Surrogates was good, not great though. Not much stage presence, although they seemed genuinely exited to be playing. Mew was great as always, but the sound wasn't that great.

  • Mew are AMAZING!

by iphegenia on 12/14/09Mezzanine - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Mew in August for the first time and was blown away by their show--this oen was even better! Not only is their music amazing live, but the light and animation show they put on is so much fun to watch. Every single member of the band puts on a brilliant show and they always look like they're having fun. Just a great all-around experience--I can't wait until they're back in SF!

  • Mew was sensational

by Starboy on 12/14/09Mezzanine - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Mew was stronger, smarter, sexier, & sassier than the 1st time I saw them when they were opening for Bloc Party a few years back. They deserve strong attention from the smart set.

  • Very pleasing

by SquintEastwood on 12/9/09Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Mew was as always very good with their presentation. Most songs were played flawlessly, however throughout most of the show, it was very difficult to hear any of the vocals. This was the first time I experienced this with Mew. Usually they very good with audio levels and such. ***The opening band was amazing! At the end of the show I went ahead and bought both their albums. The bands name is Bear In Heaven. Check them out.***

  • Amazing!

by RBFGirl on 12/7/09Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Mew was amazing! It's definitely an experience that you must go see and hear for yourself. I brought my boyfriend who only knew one song, and by the end he loved them. They are easy to get into and encapture you with their sound and interesting (and slightly funny) visuals in the background. I found out about Mew 2 years ago. Before they would play very carefully, and now they are humble yet dead on confident.
