About

Mean Girls the Musical (Chicago)

Mean girls can sometimes be popular, but never as much as Mean Girls the Broadway musical, which opened in the August Wilson Theatre in 2018 and has now spun off a touring company featuring a talented new cast and all the hilarious razzle-dazzle of Tony-winning director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw's original production. Comedy queen Tina Fey, who wrote the 2004 hit movie of the same title, won a Drama Desk award for the musical's book, which provides an inside look into the high-stakes world of teenage social strategies. Fey's husband, Jeff Richmond, wrote the songs, which feature lyrics by Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde: The Musical).

Mean Girls the Musical (Chicago) Background

Queen Bees & Wannabes, Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 self-help book about aggressive teenage girls and their cliques, inspired Tina Fey (30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) to write the film Mean Girls, which won a gaggle of Teen Choice and MTV Movie awards upon its release. Mean Girls, the musical, captures the film's caustic wit and soothing moments of recognition while fleshing out its main characters — a newly arrived high school student, her two loyal friends and a wicked trio known collectively as "the Plastics" — with the help of 21 musical numbers that embrace both the Broadway balladry ("What's Wrong With Me?") and the hormonal electricity of the best teenage pop ("Apex Predator," "Fearless").

Mean Girls contains everything fans loved about the film, and more. Of its Broadway debut, New York Magazine observed that "Mean Girls is a fast-paced fancy fun time, but it's a real treat to find that it's still witty, worldly, and wise." Directed by Casey Nicholaw, winner of a Tony for his work on The Book of Mormon, the musical Mean Girls both parodies and honors Broadway's history. Highlights include "Stop," a show-stopping tap sequence, and "Sexy," a Halloween party that combines saucy costumes with feminist sentiments. A smart and sly take on adolescent angst, Mean Girls delivers hard teenage truths with empathy and plenty of pep.

    Disappointing show

    by M. N. on 1/10/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

It felt chaotic, too much going on onstage. The musical numbers were forced, felt “campy.” Definitely not what i or my daughter (who loved the movie) expected. Disappinting.

This show is so funny! I loved the changes from the movie onto the musical. The songs were so well written and the scenes flowed so well. And the actors were phenomenal! Highly recommend this show!

Took my 2 young adult daughters and we had a great time. Wasn't sure how this was going to work as a musical...but it was better than the movie!

    Stupid with Praise

by StudentDoctorBroadway on 1/8/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

Arrived early and found our seats promptly. Got a beer from the bartender and took in the view of the stage. The crowd was young and vibrant. There was surprisingly little pink spattered throughout, but I suppose it was a Sunday and not a Wednesday afterall. I saw multiple people in sweatpants being escorted out with the ushers claiming “you can’t sit with us.” (Not actually but that would have been a treat.). The show started and this was one of only two in all my theatre experiences within which the crowd hooted and hollered at certain moments. I did not find it detracted from the show as I would have expected though. I attribute this to the young, fun, and loose nature of Mean Girls. The cast’s singing was excellent with Danielle Wade’s (Cady’s) vocals blowing me away (even though Janice’s role has the more powerful songs). I was overall extremely pleased with this show and would recommend it to anyone that wants a more lighthearted and fun stage performance.

    Best Show Ever!

by Abby on 1/8/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

I have seen many shows in Chicago, but Mean Girls was BY FAR the best one yet! The cast was so talented and passionate about what they were doing. If I could see it again, I would! 10/10! The cast was also very nice when we got to meet them at the stage door. definitely the highlight of my year. :)

    That tech stage

by Stacey on 1/8/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

The performances were strong and you felt the connection with each performer and that tech staging was amazing. Very creative and a perfect fit to this type of story.

    Nice show, but dragged out

Great dancing an singing, but not enough meaningful material for 2.5 hours. Play seemed to drag on.

    Mediocre cast

by Jen on 1/7/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

Overall mediocre. Wasn’t bad but wasn’t good either. Good vocalists, not enough actual acting — except Karen and Damian. Karen and Damian were the saving grace and are tremendous actors making their smaller roles outshine everyone and have the audience make audible reactions — even to just their physical movements. Regina and Janis have excellent singing voices. But, the acting was not great overall and to be honest, Aaron Samuels who was played by the understudy in our show, was very underwhelming. He had a great voice but not a great actor and definitely didn’t look the part as the attractive male (somewhat) lead for who the character was supposed to be. Cady was also very underwhelming because she lacked actual acting. The songs seemed like they could have been great and how the show was written seems like it could have been great, too. But it just felt like a high school production with an inexperienced cast that didn’t really sell it or were tired. I really wanted to love this show and has been looking so forward to it because I’m a huge fan of the movie and it had such great reviews, especially in NY. I even loved the Chicago performances of Dirty Dancing (which did not have good reviews) and Cruel Intentions, but this definitely fell short. So disappointing and for the first time in a long time, a show I would tell people to skip.

The play was so funny and really cute. There were slit of funny one liners that you really needed to listen to catch.

    Cute show - for adults!

by Lily on 1/7/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

The show itself was very good. However, the movie is rated Pg-13 and it was assumed the musical would be in this same category. That was not the case. I would rate it “R” as it is very sexually focused and inappropriate for 13 year olds.

    Awesome Show

    by K. on 1/6/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

The choreography was great. Singing was great too, but sound was hard to hear at times. Not sure if it was our seats. aisle 1 row n, on the far left aisle? Should not have sound issues at this price point.

    hectic but then funny

by dramamom on 1/6/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

Getting in and out of the theatre was like herding cattle. Not sure what the deal is, but I have been to a ton of plays in Chicago and New York, and never experienced quite the gridlock that we faced at the Nederlander. However, the show was fun. I saw the show in New York, and I would say that all but Regina are pretty comparable. Admittedly, it is tough to upstage Taylor Louderman, but she was hilarious after the bus accident, and I didn't find it as funny. However, great chorus, great energy and fun show.
