About

Mean Girls the Musical (Chicago)

Mean girls can sometimes be popular, but never as much as Mean Girls the Broadway musical, which opened in the August Wilson Theatre in 2018 and has now spun off a touring company featuring a talented new cast and all the hilarious razzle-dazzle of Tony-winning director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw's original production. Comedy queen Tina Fey, who wrote the 2004 hit movie of the same title, won a Drama Desk award for the musical's book, which provides an inside look into the high-stakes world of teenage social strategies. Fey's husband, Jeff Richmond, wrote the songs, which feature lyrics by Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde: The Musical).

Mean Girls the Musical (Chicago) Background

Queen Bees & Wannabes, Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 self-help book about aggressive teenage girls and their cliques, inspired Tina Fey (30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) to write the film Mean Girls, which won a gaggle of Teen Choice and MTV Movie awards upon its release. Mean Girls, the musical, captures the film's caustic wit and soothing moments of recognition while fleshing out its main characters — a newly arrived high school student, her two loyal friends and a wicked trio known collectively as "the Plastics" — with the help of 21 musical numbers that embrace both the Broadway balladry ("What's Wrong With Me?") and the hormonal electricity of the best teenage pop ("Apex Predator," "Fearless").

Mean Girls contains everything fans loved about the film, and more. Of its Broadway debut, New York Magazine observed that "Mean Girls is a fast-paced fancy fun time, but it's a real treat to find that it's still witty, worldly, and wise." Directed by Casey Nicholaw, winner of a Tony for his work on The Book of Mormon, the musical Mean Girls both parodies and honors Broadway's history. Highlights include "Stop," a show-stopping tap sequence, and "Sexy," a Halloween party that combines saucy costumes with feminist sentiments. A smart and sly take on adolescent angst, Mean Girls delivers hard teenage truths with empathy and plenty of pep.

    Disappointing

by Chicago TR on 1/17/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

The actors appeared to be giving their all to create a strong performance. However, it was not enough to overcome a weak and trite storyline, an mediocre stage set, and audio that made it difficult to distinguish what was being said or sung. A very disappointing evening overall.

    Very Enjoyable!

    by A. P. on 1/14/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

If you are someone who enjoys musicals with excellent singing, dancing, writing and staging, this is the show for you. Don’t let the subject matter of high school drama dissuade you. We all can relate to some aspect of the plot, but the theme is presented so well, you will only laugh through it this time around.

This was a high energy show that never stopped moving. The music and stage was amazing. We sat up high and was able to see everything. I loved how they modernized from the movie, and thought they did an amazing job also staying true to it.

    Watch the Movie?

by SFgirlinCHI on 1/14/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

Super underwhelmed. We left before intermission. I *think* you need to be very familiar with the movie or you might not follow on what's happening (person I attended with had NOT seen the movie and was lost at times.) The acting and singing was 5-star-- not criticizing the performers AT ALL-- they did what they could. The sets are basic and the music .. totally forgettable.

    Not A Fan...

by KW on 1/14/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

If I wasn’t familiar with the movie I would have been lost. I felt that the songs didn’t do justice for bringing the story through the end. There were things that were missed - key lines that were said in the movie as well as key scenes. One of the biggest disappointments was how they hardly focused on the talent show. That was a huge scene in the movie and they spent maybe 30 seconds! The musical also tried to be more modern with the inclusion of today’s teenage slang and social media. It could have done without that since most of the audience was in their late 20s/30s. Lastly, casting could have been much better. You have an idea in your head of who Janice is - black hair/punk gothic vibes... she had blonde hair and wasn’t that punk gothic. Damien and Aaron Samuels were also not casted well. Overall, I am glad I saw this and it was cute. However I was highly disappointed and would not go see it again.

    VIP package disappointing

by Janie on 1/12/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

The show was great at 2pm on 12/27/19. The VIP package that I was forced to purchase ($80 extra) with my 2 tickets was ridiculous. They had some plumbing issues so the bar had a puddle of water around it and the private bathrooms were closed during intermission (that probably explains the smell that was coming from the entire VIP lounge.

One of the best shows we’ve seen! We had fabulous seats in front of orchestra and also splurged for suite service and so glad we did! It felt like a private party just for us and the best part was the private bathrooms:)

It was an incredible had some extremely great one liners! The cast was outstanding great acting and singing! I would love to see it again and would advise everyone to see it.
