Mean Girls the Musical (Chicago)
Mean girls can sometimes be popular, but never as much as Mean Girls the Broadway musical, which opened in the August Wilson Theatre in 2018 and has now spun off a touring company featuring a talented new cast and all the hilarious razzle-dazzle of Tony-winning director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw's original production. Comedy queen Tina Fey, who wrote the 2004 hit movie of the same title, won a Drama Desk award for the musical's book, which provides an inside look into the high-stakes world of teenage social strategies. Fey's husband, Jeff Richmond, wrote the songs, which feature lyrics by Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde: The Musical).
Mean Girls the Musical (Chicago) Background
Queen Bees & Wannabes, Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 self-help book about aggressive teenage girls and their cliques, inspired Tina Fey (30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) to write the film Mean Girls, which won a gaggle of Teen Choice and MTV Movie awards upon its release. Mean Girls, the musical, captures the film's caustic wit and soothing moments of recognition while fleshing out its main characters — a newly arrived high school student, her two loyal friends and a wicked trio known collectively as "the Plastics" — with the help of 21 musical numbers that embrace both the Broadway balladry ("What's Wrong With Me?") and the hormonal electricity of the best teenage pop ("Apex Predator," "Fearless").
Mean Girls contains everything fans loved about the film, and more. Of its Broadway debut, New York Magazine observed that "Mean Girls is a fast-paced fancy fun time, but it's a real treat to find that it's still witty, worldly, and wise." Directed by Casey Nicholaw, winner of a Tony for his work on The Book of Mormon, the musical Mean Girls both parodies and honors Broadway's history. Highlights include "Stop," a show-stopping tap sequence, and "Sexy," a Halloween party that combines saucy costumes with feminist sentiments. A smart and sly take on adolescent angst, Mean Girls delivers hard teenage truths with empathy and plenty of pep.
The girls that played Janice snd Karen were great. The show was very funny and we really enjoyed it.
Loved it! So much fun taking my Teen granddaughters, Daughter and Daughter in law ! Lots of laughs. Great cast! A great girls night out!
Mean Girls was a great show. The songs and dances were executed very well, and it was a great experience.
We live about 3 hours outside of Chicago but traveled there to see "Mean Girls" at the Nederlander. The entire experience was amazing! It is a wonderful show in a beyond beautiful venue. We will definitely be back!
The show was amazing! My only complaint - Our seats were relatively close (orchestra level) but we ended up with a giant seated two rows up which obstructed our view significantly. It should be theater etiquette for incredibly tall men with large heads to a “skooch” down in their seat a bit. ;)
From the very first line of the performance I knew it was going to be a great evening. Very funny & very current. All teenagers & parents should see this. 5 stars
I did not care for this musical. I wanted to leave at intermission
Very high energy show. Lot's of fun, I highly recommend it....❤❤
The good message of be yourself was rather lost in the extreme sexualization. There were many young children there. I would have walked out if I were those parents. Definitely PG -13 given this as well as language. On the positive side, the vocals and acting were excellent.
The show was amazing and we loved the backdrop visuals!!!! A lot of creativity and energy! The only negative was the amount of people allowed to enter the theater once the show started. Once the show begins, doors should remain closed.
My husband and I took our 19 year old daughter and all three of us enjoyed this show so much! The music, the singing, the dancing (even some tap dancing!!) were all wonderful. The colorful set and costumes were uplifting, eye-catching. And the story was engaging too. Some humor, some poignant dialogue.... it was great. A lot of fun. Even my husband loved it!
Show was well done. Cast was sensational. Lots of action. Cast handled a cast change for Karen in the second act with humor. I took my daughter and she also loved the show. Loved it!
Great seats. Beautiful venue. Show was good. Acting superb.
Loved the show! Very funny! The digital set was amazing. Closed captioning was helpful in a few parts where we couldn't understand some of the dialogue. My family had a great time!
I attended with my 13yr old daughter, some of the jokes themes were a bit mature but I just hope they went over her head. The songs were fun and worked well with the movie. Overall we enjoyed the show very much.
Very lively and entertaining show with wonderful music!
"Mean Girls" was a Christmas gift for our 16-year-old daughter. She LOVED it! Colorful. Modern. Fun. Definitely PG-14. The theatre is beautiful with helpful staff. I wish we could afford to do it again! :-)
Great original songs, fantastic set design, very funny and superb dancing.
We lucked out on the nice weather and were able to take a nice walk to and from the beautiful theater. No wait to get in and lots of time for fun pictures. The theater was first rate and very comfortable. Great view and didn't look like a bad seat in the place. "Mean Girls" was a choice my teen daughters had picked and not knowing anything about it I was happily surprised at how much I really enjoyed the show. I liked the content, the voices of the actors were amazing as was the acting and dancing. Never had seen the video type scene changes and they were so smooth and unbelievably realistic looking. I have to say a big KUDOS to the theater for providing the closed captioning. One of my daughters is hearing impaired and misses a lot during big shows so that was a huge plus! Thank you for thinking of this group of patrons. Truly an amazing experience for all of us!
Took my tween daughter as a Christmas present and she enjoyed the experience from start to finish. Seating was smooth, sound was great and the tour is really, really talented. I would ask the Nederlander to do a better job staffing both the merch stand and the bar to facilitate more sales and serve customers. We got our merch before the show after waiting in line for a bit and I pulled the rip cord on my intermission drinks for fear of being late into the second act.
