About

Mean Girls the Musical (Chicago)

Mean girls can sometimes be popular, but never as much as Mean Girls the Broadway musical, which opened in the August Wilson Theatre in 2018 and has now spun off a touring company featuring a talented new cast and all the hilarious razzle-dazzle of Tony-winning director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw's original production. Comedy queen Tina Fey, who wrote the 2004 hit movie of the same title, won a Drama Desk award for the musical's book, which provides an inside look into the high-stakes world of teenage social strategies. Fey's husband, Jeff Richmond, wrote the songs, which feature lyrics by Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde: The Musical).

Mean Girls the Musical (Chicago) Background

Queen Bees & Wannabes, Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 self-help book about aggressive teenage girls and their cliques, inspired Tina Fey (30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) to write the film Mean Girls, which won a gaggle of Teen Choice and MTV Movie awards upon its release. Mean Girls, the musical, captures the film's caustic wit and soothing moments of recognition while fleshing out its main characters — a newly arrived high school student, her two loyal friends and a wicked trio known collectively as "the Plastics" — with the help of 21 musical numbers that embrace both the Broadway balladry ("What's Wrong With Me?") and the hormonal electricity of the best teenage pop ("Apex Predator," "Fearless").

Mean Girls contains everything fans loved about the film, and more. Of its Broadway debut, New York Magazine observed that "Mean Girls is a fast-paced fancy fun time, but it's a real treat to find that it's still witty, worldly, and wise." Directed by Casey Nicholaw, winner of a Tony for his work on The Book of Mormon, the musical Mean Girls both parodies and honors Broadway's history. Highlights include "Stop," a show-stopping tap sequence, and "Sexy," a Halloween party that combines saucy costumes with feminist sentiments. A smart and sly take on adolescent angst, Mean Girls delivers hard teenage truths with empathy and plenty of pep.

Show was great, venue was not

    by W.W.D on 1/23/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

The show was great. My family had two elderly folks and another on crutches. It was a very cold snowy night and the venue was not friendly to letting people out of the cold to wait for the ticket holder. After the show they kicked my family out prior to me getting back with the car. It was totally icy in front of the theater which was very treacherous to navigate on crutches and a cane.

We came in late due to the snow storm, but we were seated quickly. The show had us cracking up the entire time. The cast/crew/music all did AMAZING! I would recommend this show to anyone needing a comedy show to break up the winter blues.

    Great Theater Experience.

    by J.Mo on 1/22/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

I saw Mean Girls in NYC two years ago when it opened and this touring production (even with MANY understudies) did not disappoint. I loved the dialogue, lyrics and especially the innovative set design.

The boys routines were really entertaining . I also enjoyed the Tao dancing, that was a treat! It went by really quickly and had some really important messages tucked in there !!

    Mean Girls 1-18-2020

by JLB on 1/21/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

Several of the leads were played by the understudies at the 8pm performance. That was a little disappointing but still the actors were all extremely talented. There was one standout singer. The songs and dances were entertaining though no real songs that stuck in our ears. We loved the sets and digital backdrops. A friend asked if it was worth a 2 hr drive from her town. I wasn’t sure what to answer. I LOVE Tina Fey and the orig movie, but not sure I’d drive 2 hours for this show in Chicago. We had driven 4.5 hours for another event In Chicago this weekend and added Mean Girls to our itinerary. Our seats were around $141 each. Not sure i would do it over, having hindsight.

    Great Musical, Terrible Staff

by Jennifer S. on 1/21/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

The production was great. We had a really fun time during the actual performance. But the staff at the Nederlander Chicago were rude, impatient, and hostile. The guy running the merch was yelling at guests and verbally and physically impatient. When the musical ended, in was bitterly cold and people were probably taking a bit longer than usual to exit. Security and ushers were yelling at guests to leave. One usher actually yelled to a group of ladies, “Hey, get back here! You have to leave right now!”

    Energetic and Fun

    by G B on 1/21/20James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

Good young talent and loved the production's used of digital visual effects. First act was OK but second was much better and made a connection. This is not ever going to be a classic or seen again and again but it was worth the price once.
