About

A member of Athletic Mic League and Now On, Ann Arbor native and longtime eclectic DJ/producer Andrew Cohen began recording soul-seeped material as something of a joke, not planning on it to reach beyond his circle of friends and family. Mayer Hawthorne, the pseudonym Cohen used for the songs, eventually took on a life of its own. When a couple Hawthorne songs were played for Peanut Butter Wolf, the Stones Throw label head was baffled; he initially thought he could have been hearing re-edits of obscure late-'60s/early-'70s soul singles, not the work of a multi-instrumentalist who laid everything down himself. Subsequently signed to Stones Throw, Cohen debuted Hawthorne with "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out" b/w "When I Said Goodbye," a pair of scratchy and bittersweet tales of heartache, on red, heart-shaped 7" vinyl. The "Maybe So, Maybe No" 12" followed shortly thereafter, which preceded the full-length A Strange Arrangement, released during fall 2009. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

  • Mayer Hawthotne GREAT SHOW!

    by plr728 on 2/25/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Had a great time. Venue was good and Mayer Hawthorne was fantastic. Good value. I go to many live shows and pay much more at times for far less of a show. If you can get out to see him I recommend it.

  • QUADRON& MAYER SHUT IT DOWN!

    by Kristen735 on 2/25/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

FINALLY! Artists who aren't afraid to ACTUALLY play real music. UGH - EVERYTHING about their performance was fantastic! And don't let the lead singer of Quadron fool you, that girl has PIPES!! The greatest Lauren Hill covers I've ever heard live. Sweet Jesus, this show was everything. Mayer also turns the house out with his smooth style band choreography and sexy little dance moves. The show was clean though, and suitable for all ages. For the performance we got, the ticket prices were a STEAL! I'm almost certain this is the last time I'll see Quadron or Mayer Hawthorne tickets for those prices again. This was possibly one of the greatest recreational choices I've made in a while.

Was turned on to Mayer Hawthorne by friends and really enjoyed his retro sound. His concert totally reinforced my belief that he will be an act to be reckoned with and is a very entertaining showman. Not necessarily the music but his ability to draw in the audience, attract an eclectic crowd and put on a totally entertaining show to support the great music, reminded me very much of the young Chris Isaak back in the day.

  • Awesome concert!

by Bnlewismd on 2/25/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Great concert. Started right on time. The first act, Quadron, I had never heard of but was very impressed. I saw half the audience during the intermission googling her. Mayer was awesome. He played almost all the songs from "Where does this door go" and played a couple from his other albums. I had a great time and would definitely recommend it.

The musicians were very talented! Great opening band. Loved the groove and style of Quadron. This is a great venue, not too large but comfortable.

  • Worth Every Penny

by Funkatopia on 2/25/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Mayer is a GREAT vocalist and performer. Nothing fancy about the show minus a nice heart door that he enters through. They reached through the full library and stay focused mostly on the new album which was incredible. The band is incredibly tight and the musicians are top notch. Sound balance between the performers was perfect (maybe a tad loud though, so bring earplugs), but all in all, it was a great show. I wouldn't hesitate to see them in the least and will definitely do so again. Opening band Quadron was also a pleasant surprise as well.

Amazing show! Great entertainer and fabulous singer! Super fun, non-stop. If you love Motown music, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, and singers like Amy Winehouse, don't miss out on Mayer Hawthorne! He's awesome!

  • Mayer Hawthorne at Center Stage 22FEB14

    by LML416 on 2/25/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

I go to my fair share of concerts and I am a devoted fan of all music but Mayer Hawthorne at Center Stage this weekend has escalated to the tip top of my favorite performances at this venue... And quite possibly in my top three of all time favorite shows. After the show I was telling my friend I would LOVE to see him do a stripped down (acoustic) performance at this venue.

  • Amazing show

Blow up the chairs, everyone was trying to dance...

  • Great show, strict venue

by voxtacet on 2/24/14The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely loved hearing Mayer Hawthorne play, he put on such a great and energetic show! The Pageant was different than any other venues I'd been to. There were a plethora of security guards around. I didn't mind having my bag searched upon entering, but I thought it was a bit ridiculous that beverages weren't allowed on the dance floor, not even water. And a creepy security guard was in front of me the whole time next to the stage. Also, the drinks are really expensive. Mayer Hawthorne and the wonderful opening act, Quadron, were definitely party enough to distract me from the drawbacks of the venue. I would see MH anywhere!

  • Mayer Hawthorne is even better in person!

Loved the concert - even better than expected. And really enjoyed Quadron, the opening act.

  • Mayer Hawthorne is an EPIC performer!!!!

    by Redbone1216 on 2/23/14The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

I hesitated to attend the concert because I had been under the weather and didn't want to leave the house, but at the 11th hour, I decided to go......That was the best decision I ever made. It was so worth risking relapse of a cold. Mayer Hawthorne would have been worth getting sick over. He is amazing. The age range was all over the place. Though I am 42, I partied like I was in my 20s.

  • In my top 5 shows of all time!

by MsNiki on 2/23/14The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

I was worried at first because it looked to be sparsley attended for awhile, but the floor and the other seating quickly filled up. We had a great spot! CoCo O. has the voice of an angel! She kept mostly to songs from the new album "Avalanche" . With her hair in a ponytail and dressed in a short floral shirtdress and flat shoes, she had a sweet, unassuming stage presence and seamlessly moved from song to song. You can tell that some of the Mayer Hawthorne fans weren't too familiar with her, but I think she gained some new fans. After a brief delay, funky drums, guitars, and keys filled the air and smoke and lights flashed: Mayer Hawthorne had arrived and didn't mess around! If his mission was to keep everyone moving all night, fill their ears with silky soul and radiate confidence, humor, and sex appeal--I believe he succeeded tenfold! He stuck to new album material for the most part as well. The County was tight--wonderful group of musicians--and I loved the little choreography Mayer and the band did.

  • Mayer is amazing!

by LaFornarina on 2/18/14Madison Theater - CovingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This is my second time seeing Mayer and he just gets better and better.

  • Couldn't hear the vocals

by OkayDrae on 2/18/14Madison Theater - CovingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The sound was amazing for the opener. Quadron's lead singer belted some beautiful, sultry and soulful numbers. And I could hear every word. When Mayer came on though, the base and guitar were so much louder than the vocals I felt like I was watching I high school Jam band in a garage. Great energy and stage presence... Just wish I could hear the songs! This may be attributed to the venue or Mayer's attempts to have more of a rock sound. Not sure.
