About

A member of Athletic Mic League and Now On, Ann Arbor native and longtime eclectic DJ/producer Andrew Cohen began recording soul-seeped material as something of a joke, not planning on it to reach beyond his circle of friends and family. Mayer Hawthorne, the pseudonym Cohen used for the songs, eventually took on a life of its own. When a couple Hawthorne songs were played for Peanut Butter Wolf, the Stones Throw label head was baffled; he initially thought he could have been hearing re-edits of obscure late-'60s/early-'70s soul singles, not the work of a multi-instrumentalist who laid everything down himself. Subsequently signed to Stones Throw, Cohen debuted Hawthorne with "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out" b/w "When I Said Goodbye," a pair of scratchy and bittersweet tales of heartache, on red, heart-shaped 7" vinyl. The "Maybe So, Maybe No" 12" followed shortly thereafter, which preceded the full-length A Strange Arrangement, released during fall 2009. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

    Got my "soul on"

by Katelovesrocknroll on 2/3/14Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

Mayer Hawthorne was amazing live! He was energetic with sex appeal and had that smooth aura that only people who's got their souls in their veins project. Crowd was also lively. He sang mostly songs from the latest album which was fine with me cause that's what I loved the most but also did some mash up of Poison and Walk This Way that got the crowd hyped up including myself. The only thing that annoyed me was the venue itself that it charged $20 for parking and it's not even vallet. But yeah Im a fan of Mayer for life now!!!

    Mayer Hawthorne is amazing

by KylaE on 9/10/13The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Mayer Hawthorne and his band were amazing, just as I expected. They were funny, they were gorgeous, they were so musically talented. He even played bartender for two audience members and then we got to be a part My only problem was how long he took to start. After they took down the opener's set, it was almost an hour before MH and the band started, which was a long time to stand around. The opening group, the Superhumanoids, were also great. They were very talented and fresh, but my only criticism is that they weren't a great opener because their music is kind of slow and sleepy, so it really didn't pump up the crownd at all. However, it was still good.

    by MoeJoe87 on 10/23/12Bluebird Nightclub - Bloomington

Mayer Hawthorne put on a fabulous show at a great venue. I drove an hour from Indy to Bloomington and sacrificed precious sleep to see the show and it was worth every sacrifice! He interacted with the crowd and played every song I wanted to hear.

This concert exceeded my expectations! Mayer Hawthorne is just as good (or better) live than his recordings. One of the best, if not the best concert I've been to.
