About

A member of Athletic Mic League and Now On, Ann Arbor native and longtime eclectic DJ/producer Andrew Cohen began recording soul-seeped material as something of a joke, not planning on it to reach beyond his circle of friends and family. Mayer Hawthorne, the pseudonym Cohen used for the songs, eventually took on a life of its own. When a couple Hawthorne songs were played for Peanut Butter Wolf, the Stones Throw label head was baffled; he initially thought he could have been hearing re-edits of obscure late-'60s/early-'70s soul singles, not the work of a multi-instrumentalist who laid everything down himself. Subsequently signed to Stones Throw, Cohen debuted Hawthorne with "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out" b/w "When I Said Goodbye," a pair of scratchy and bittersweet tales of heartache, on red, heart-shaped 7" vinyl. The "Maybe So, Maybe No" 12" followed shortly thereafter, which preceded the full-length A Strange Arrangement, released during fall 2009. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

  • Mayer Hawthorne slays!

    by JoeDro1 on 5/9/16Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Finally got an opportunity to see Mayer, and he did not disappoint! I took my nephew with me, and he was blown away by the show! Perfect mix of his library too, although being a big fan there were a few songs I'd love to have heard performed! Can't wait to see him again, and Tuxedo as well! He sounded excellent live!

  • Way to loud!

by MayerMakesYouMove on 5/9/16Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 2 out of 5

Mayer Hawthorne's concert was a very disappointing! I was really looking forward to this show but it was so loud that it really diminished the quality of the musicianship. Couldn't hear the lyrics through all the pounding bass and it just sucked the life and fun right out of it.

  • Mayer hawthorne all three bands!!

    by Rich72 on 2/1/16Teragram Ballroom - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

What a great show! All three sets were great. Production was sharp and not a lot of lag time between sets. What an effort my Mayor Hawthorne. My only request is that he would play at a seating venue. The standing makes for a very long night. Once again, great show!

  • This show was amazing!!

Nice place. We were standing up and danced the whole time. :)

  • Could see it again and again!

by Magoocrush on 1/22/16Teragram Ballroom - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

First time seeing Mayer Hawthorne, and all 3 'incarnations' were amazing. The Teragram Ballroom was a great SRO venue, and the crowd was incredibly energetic and appreciative. Such a good show! I will go to see him again! Only (minor) complaint is that his mic was on too low for some songs.

  • Mayer Hawthorne

by Berniemomo on 10/28/14FREMONT COUNTRY CLUB - LAS VEGASRating: 5 out of 5

Coming into the venue was great, it was really close to the life is beautiful festival which as really nice. I'm always excited to see Mayer perform and was even more happy when I saw him in the lineup. When I got inside , check in was easy. The security guards were real chill and nice. There were a few people at first, but more started to come in. The lighting made the setting comfortable. The band as always was on point and real dope.

  • Mayer Hawthorne was DABOMB.COM

    by Danielle1013 on 3/9/14The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

I cannot believe how inexpensive it was to see this man. He is such a true artist and performer that I couldn't believe he wasn't at a much bigger venue. I aboslutely love the outfits Mayer and his band had on. They all looked so good! I have been a big fan of Mayer Hawthorne for years and I can now check it off my bucket list that I have seen him. His music continues to get better and I am truly glad I got this opportunity to see him life. His voice is sick! The band is sick! The choreograph was adorable! And the songs are sick! 5 stars definitely. I Can't wait to see him again.

  • Mayer Hawthorne is so talented and entertaining!

by goingtoboston on 3/6/14House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

I have loved him for so long but never seen him perform. Definitely worth it!!! Him and his band were so entertaining, and he is clearly very talented. I went with a friend who had never heard his music, and he also had a great time.

  • Great show by Mayer Hawthorne

by apsny on 3/5/14Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

It's great to go to concert where everyone- performers and audience- are having a fun time. Such was the Mayer Hawthorne event last week. Everyone onstage and off was singing along, dancing and just letting themselves go with the music. It was light and fun and a very entertaining evening. The opening act, Quadron, was also very good. The lead is a Danish singer with a powerful voice.

  • This show was a treat for the soul

by Mleacock on 3/5/14House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

My only regret is that I missed Quadron. Otherwise, this was everything that I had hope a Mayer Hawthorne and The County show would be. Such a great repertoire; all the best tracks were played and some fantastic covers / medleys too. The show has stuck with me for the past 4 days and has set the bar for the other shows I'll be attending this year.

You want to be on your feet for his show because he will have you moving to the Detroit Motown Hip Hop Soul Vibe all night. Unbelievable song writer and muscian. Go out now and buy any of his music,

  • Mayer Hawthorne - not to be missed!

by AliCatNYC on 3/3/14Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Been trying to get to a Mayer Hawthorne show for a little over a year, and we just keep missing each other by a few days in every location, from Central PA to London to Rio...until NYC. Saw the first of two NYC shows on a frigid Thursday night at Webster Hall - venue was perfect size, ran efficiently with good service, Henny & Gingerale was flowing at the bar, and the two hour set FLEW by. Large contingent turned up early to catch Quadron as opening act as well. Great energy and connection with the audience, and the lead was in good voice - Andrew and his band (The County) truly seem to be having a great time on stage. The DJ during intermission was great also! This is fun, danceable music - similar to a Sharon Jones & Dap-Kings show with alot of the same energy. Even the hipsters danced, and usually they just stand there and don't move much, so there ya go. My only regret was that I had to go out of town and missed the second show / DJ set the following night in Brooklyn. Great show, great band, highly recommend!

  • Mayer Hawthorne Is An Incredible Perfomer

by DWIN on 3/2/14Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This concert was one of the best I have been to in a while. Hawthorne put on an amazing concert and kept everyone up and moving from the very first second his band came on stage till the second he walked off to a roaring applause. I hope that he comes back to amaze and "wow" New York for a very long time!

  • Webster Hall-2

by raincheck on 3/2/14Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Another great show, polished, engaged. I may have liked music from last years show a little better than this years, but still a wonderful time. Lights were amazing and well coordinated with the music. Put MH on your must see live list.

by jazzydo on 3/1/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Thoroughly enjoyed our evening with Mayer Hawthorne--fun, engaged with the audience, music was really really good! I'm from Detroit so definitely out supporting Mayer. Quadron, who opened up was wonderful. Perfect combo and loved the venue-Center Stage.

  • Top-Notch Indie Show

by akeemtoure on 2/27/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

I bought tickets to this concert primarily because of Quadron. I didn't know who Mayer Hawthorne was until I bought the tickets, but I was amazed by his album and by his set. Everything started on time, the sound was great, the musicality was great (didn't even realize there were less than 4 band members on stage at any time. Definitely worth seeing.
