About

A member of Athletic Mic League and Now On, Ann Arbor native and longtime eclectic DJ/producer Andrew Cohen began recording soul-seeped material as something of a joke, not planning on it to reach beyond his circle of friends and family. Mayer Hawthorne, the pseudonym Cohen used for the songs, eventually took on a life of its own. When a couple Hawthorne songs were played for Peanut Butter Wolf, the Stones Throw label head was baffled; he initially thought he could have been hearing re-edits of obscure late-'60s/early-'70s soul singles, not the work of a multi-instrumentalist who laid everything down himself. Subsequently signed to Stones Throw, Cohen debuted Hawthorne with "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out" b/w "When I Said Goodbye," a pair of scratchy and bittersweet tales of heartache, on red, heart-shaped 7" vinyl. The "Maybe So, Maybe No" 12" followed shortly thereafter, which preceded the full-length A Strange Arrangement, released during fall 2009. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

Mayer Hawthorne and the County are a great and entertaining band. My friends and I danced the whole entire time. I love the small venue because you have a better view of the band. I would definitely go see them again.

  • An AMAZING Show!

Mayer Hawthorne is even better live than he is on his albums. Sounded fantastic, the band was incredible - it was a tremendous evening. One of the best shows I've ever attended!

  • Mayer Hawthorne and Quadron was Epic!!!

by Drewskee on 2/11/14Vinyl at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas - Las VegasRating: 5 out of 5

Overall great experience! Stand up shows are always going to be difficult especially if your trying to get to the restroom in the middle of the show. Chances are after taking care of your business, your original spot will already be taken. I sucked it up and stood front stage the whole time! I would definitely go and watch both Mayer and Quadron again!

Very high energy show! I had no idea of the range of this band and what a talented guitar player Mayer is. Great venue, great band, overall fantastic experience! A must see show!

  • mayer hawthorne is amazing!!!

by NATAbynature on 2/5/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

I had the VIP pass and got to meet Mayer Hawthorne before the show. he was so sweet & fun. took pictures, autographed stuff, talked with us. he told us that was his first time playing at the Fox Theater. I wish the meet and greet lasted a little longer. great opening acts (I've never heard of Quadron but after her performance, I became a fan). great venue, & DJ Kurse played awesome old school hits. mayer hawthorne came on stage & out on one helluva show. sounded even better live! and he came back onstage for an encore :) sold out show, great music, great performance. he deserves more recognition.

  • Silky Smooth Mayer Hawthorne

    by AF1892 on 2/4/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time seeing Mayer Hawthorne perform live, and it was also my first time at the Fox Theater in Oakland. The show was amazing! Mayer has such a soulful voice. He's a great throwback to the Motown sound and that Earth, Wind & Fire kind of vibe. I'm so glad that he performed at the Fox and that I was able to get tickets for the mezzanine, so that I don't have to be packed in like a sardine down on the general admission floor. I will definitely go and see him in the future whenever he tours his next album....whenever that is.

Great show, great music, fun crowd of people. Mayer Hawthorne is up and coming and if you don't know about him - you are not on the fast track.

Awesome show as always. I love Coco! She's beautiful and she has a beautiful voice! Mayer is always a very good performer. I wish he did more Dilla tributes, but overall show was dope!

  • Awesome artist...lousy venue!

    by Cook1eLady on 2/4/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

This is the second time I've seen Mayer Hawthorne in 1-1/2 years and he puts on an excellent show! He's very energetic and interacts with the audience. Although my favorite album is "How Do You Do," his latest CD is also very good. I would NEVER hesitate to recommend him to anyone and I LOVE the fact that he doesn't charge HUGE prices. The sound quality at the Fox is LOUSY! I don't think I will ever go back there again The two opening acts weren't bad, but the sound was so loud and distorted that I couldn't enjoy them (with or without earplugs). My prior experiences there led me to believe that the headliner would sound great--not so at this show. If I didn't like him so much, I would have left! I would like to know, if the Fox gets alot of complaints about their sound quality. Does it depend on where your seat is located? I was in the Loge for Lenny Kravitz and it was excellent. Gary Clark, Jr. I was in the first part of the balcony his sound was awesome, but the opening act too loud and distorted. Most of the people in my section went and got earplugs. This really shouldn't be necessary unless you're in the first few rows. I'm hoping someone can address this sound issue with the Fox. Thanks!

Wow to say the least. Mayer Hawthorne's versatility paired with an amazing band. Win win situation

  • Mayer Hawthorne and rhe County was Amazing!!!!

by Berniemomo on 2/4/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

The whole concert was great, from Quadron to Mayer!! They are all so amazing and talented. Fox theater was great, but I felt the sound echoed too much inside, which muffled the sound. Besides that, the experience was phenomenal, because it was great to see new artists open for Mayer as he has for others in the past. The new album, where does this door go, is a must have. Their performance was flawless and I could tell since they have been doing their European tour. I went with my buddy, and we had a blast..we sang to every song...whoop whoop!! The bar tenders were friendly, as well as the coat check girl:) Overall, a fun and great show!!

  • Mayer Hawthorne and The County get better every sh

by OBChico on 2/4/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Third time for us to see Mayer Hawthorne and the quality of the set and stage presence get better each time! One problem with sound, the engineers had Meyer Sound fill in speakers on the stage to help us up front hear better but they never turned them on! You could hear the on-stage amps and the drums but the vocals from the FOH speakers were drowned out by the stage amps! Big mistake as this was my only complaint with the show

  • Absolutely Fantastic

by DLip on 2/4/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Mayer Hawthorne is simply one of the best performers out today. There is no doubt you will be grooving to this funkmeister's soulful sounds.

Good music from Mayer, Quadron and Gavin Turek. Just a great night

  • Great Concert!

    by brid5et on 2/4/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Danced all night! The warm up bands were great and good sound. Mayer H. was good but I wish he played the hard bass on "Her Favorite Song", and there were no back up singers in his group. But, the over all concert was great!

  • Quadron --great! Mayer Hawthorne--great!!

First time at the venue, 2nd time seeing Mayer Hawthorne and a big fan of Quadron. Enjoyable

The opening acts were really good singers and very entertaining. Mayer Hawthorne was absolutely terrific. It was a great show. I haven't been to a concert in a long time and this one exceeded my expectations. Really, really great.

  • Mayer Hawthorne was great

by Jeffnandez on 2/4/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

The sound was awesome the energy was great. Mayer also had good interaction with the crowd. The only downfall was the weak DJ playing between acts.

  • Blue Eyed Soul

by ajcaplc on 2/3/14Hollywood Palladium - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

My first MH concert was more like a giant dance party. Tight band, great crowd reaction. Love that the Paladium leaves the house lights up a bit. It was more like a school dance then a concert.
