Although beautifully performed, I was left feeling somewhat emotionally void and inspired. I kept waiting, searching myself and the performance but never reached that overwhelming out poor of emotion I've received from other operas. Faust stayed with me for days but Madame was gone right after I left. I expected far more than I was given.
The orchestra, soloists, chorus, actors were superb. I was, however, a little disappointed in the set design and costuming -- I expected a more colorful presentation.
If the amount of tears is any indication of the quality then Madama Butterfly deserves an A+. The simplicity of the set allowed one to really focus on the storyline and the emotion portrayed by the performers was incredible! Jill Gardner's voice - magnificent.
Opera was great with great acting and singing. Venue was crowded and hot.
i loved the entire opera.... it was awesome. thank you for a great performance.
An excellent production; very moving performances. Highly recommended.
I thought the voices were excellent and overall enjoyed the production very much.
Exquisite voices, interesting story. The act before intermission is a little slow to get going, but short. The rest of the performance is engrossing and extremely well done. The story comes together nicely and generates great empathy for the title character. I am not an aficionado of Opera, but I enjoyed this production.
Better seats, great company, our second time around. This Butterfly was just not as good as the last time Madama Butterfly was in town. The re-positioning of the aria was just anti-climatic. And whose idea was it to commit Hari-Kari in the neck. Of course I am not familiar with all parts of the culture but isn't the traditional Hari-Kari attained by sending a weapon into the bowel? Because I have a theatre imagination, I will not linger on the concept of a dark haired dark eyed couple producing a blond blue eyed kid, but it seemed overly creative.
Your white linen hankie will never be the same after catching the bucketsful of tears generated during "Un bel di vedremo." Butterfly sets the Gold Standard for tear jerkers and was beautifully performed and staged. We all know the story, and what happens, and how it all ends. But...we still perch on the edge of our seat waiting breathlessly and hoping, no, praying that Cio-Cio-San will live happily ever after. And why not? Maybe this is Revision 6. Jill Gardner as Butterfly was unable to reach the high notes without squeaking but she's young and will hopefully improve with age (as supposedly does fine wine). Her acting was verrrrry good. The Sat. matinee was a first so we attendees were ground breakers. The pre-performance lecture was edifying and the after stage-side gathering hosted by the really HOT General Director (he wears it well) was fun. Some great questions from the audience and I liked the old lady who asked the Bonze about how he got into the opera part of the music business and if he regretted not going the Mick Jagger/Stones route. I was front row, center: Up close and personal is a good description. Actually, it was almost participatory...
It was our first opera experience and it was great! We appreciated the matinee offering and the wonderful Opera Chat before the show.
Voices, settings, costumes, everything enjoyable. We are looking forward to the next opera.
music, performers outstanding, thoroughly wonderful.
The voices, staging, acting, and costumes were superb, every bit as good as the New York Met!
Great singing and stagecraft ,however it got a little boring near the end and could have been shorter all in all could have been better and more fluent
1st live opera and we loved it. The staging and costumes were very nice.
This was the first time I had been to an opera. Had previously avoided operas because I could not understand what was happening through music. The sub titles were very helpful and I thoroughly enjoyed it and the orchestra was wonderful, as always.
This was my first opera experience in Phoenix and I wasn't disappointed. The cast was fantastic though the sets and costumes were lacking. I will attend another Arizona Opera performance in the future.
This was the first live opera performance I have seen. While I have nothing against which to compare, I was blown away by this performance. The staging was simple and beautiful, and the music and singing were the equal of any recording I have heard. I am eager to see more performances by Arizona Opera!
