About

M83's "Midnight City" was one of the most anthemic songs of 2011, ending up at the top of Pitchfork's year-end list and propelling album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming to Top 40 chart positions around the world. The band's subsequent concert tour gave ticket buyers a close-up view of what makes them an international success — namely, a deep catalog of polished songs, a laser and light show that blows all audiences away and the infectious stage presence of founding member Anthony Gonzalez. If there's one word to describe M83's vibe, it's optimistic; and whether it's the band's exhilarating anthems or their danceable synth-based instrumentals, you'll definitely walk away feeling good. "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming" was their breakout, but seeing them live puts them over the top.

The band got its start in Antibes, France, with founding members Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau. After releasing two albums, 2001's self-titled debut and 2003's "Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts," to critical acclaim, Fromageau departed and left Gonzalez to pursue his singular vision. Gonzalez soon followed up with 2005's "Before the Dawn Heals Us" and 2008's "Saturdays=Youth" before culminating with "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming." Gonzalez has also contributed to several remix collections and a film soundtrack while attracting a steady stream of his own collaborators for M83. This band shows that "overnight success" is often years in the making, and now that they're in the limelight, they have the chops to back it up.

    M83 Bright lights Big Sound

by SanRafaelSC on 11/13/11Mezzanine - San Francisco

Matt Gonzalez and M83 crew brought all the bells and whistles and synths and guitars and drums and don't forget, the LIGHTS! Beginning with "Intro" from the new double album, the energy never waivered. Nice touch bringing on Justin Meldel Johnson for a couple of songs to jam on bass and guitar. JMJ produced the album and nice to see the fro back on JMJ. Best show I've seen at Mezzanine by far. M83 deserve to be playing bigger venues like right now. If they make their way back to SF towards the end of this tour book them at the FIllmore!

    Too LOUD

by nicknamealias on 11/12/11The Music Box - Hollywood

Too LOUD. Way too LOUD. Internal organ re-arranging LOUD. Could hear nothing but bass. Too bad. Was so looking forward to the show. Now will not go see them again. Its not the venue. Have been to the Music Box plenty of times and its one of my favorite places for a concert. Maybe Im getting old.

    M83 w/ Active Child

by Anonymous on 11/11/11The Music Box - Hollywood

This was one of the best shows I have seen in a long time. It was my favorite of the year. The sound and lighting only added to the magic that is M83. Active Child was a great opener as well. It has been a while since I have felt that certain heaviness in my chest from a performance. I have every intention of see M83 again in January.

    Pinch me, I'm dreaming!

by Flowski on 11/4/11Masquerade - Atlanta

The lights, the crowd, the atmosphere, and most importantly, the music were increbible! Anthony Gonzales was amazing, but I was really blown away by Morgan Kibby and her wonderfully versatile vocals. All the musicians did a great job. It was so good, I wish I could do the concert all over again... and when it was all over, it felt like I was waking from a beautiful dream.

Holloween with M83 is always a good time.

by Anonymous on 11/3/11Masquerade - Atlanta

A kid in a zombie costume stood in the middle in the stage when the lights came on, which was a great touch to the awesome performance that followed.

A great show, a great value!

by InOrbit on 11/3/11Masquerade - Atlanta

M83 put on a great show at the Masquerade in Atlanta Oct. 31, 2011. True to the evening, many attendees dressed up in their favorite costumes, so it was nice to dance and bob one's head while Brian from "Family Guy," witches and wizards, pirates and princesses wafted around the room. I even saw two Waldos, from "Where's Waldo?" Where is he? At the Masquerade, of course! I can't say too much about the openers, really. They fit the mood of the evening pretty well, but they both went on too long for my liking. However, once M83 took the stage, you knew you were in the presence of professionals. The sound mixture and lighting design were both outstanding. It was easy enough to make out both the rocking licks of the guitar and his dream-state vocals. He played numerous songs from the latest album, "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming.", and also some classic tunes from "Saturdays=Youth" and previous albums. All in all a wonderful time! If he drops by your neck of the woods, you might pick up a ticket!

They managed to sounded even better live which I thought would be impossible. The tracks from the new album were played and sounded incredible. I loved how they still managed to play Skin of the night and We own the sky. Btw Active child opened and sounded great as well.

M83 Atlanta, on Halloween at the Masquerade

by RudyRudiger on 11/2/11Masquerade - Atlanta

It's worth your time to see m83 now. They just broke the top 100 on the billboard charts on this recent double album release. I'm sure they will be playing arenas next tour. They have some really sweet lighting rigs, and they change the songs up slightly for a live application. Sounds really good. Hopefully your venue will be better than the Masquerade.
