About

M83's "Midnight City" was one of the most anthemic songs of 2011, ending up at the top of Pitchfork's year-end list and propelling album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming to Top 40 chart positions around the world. The band's subsequent concert tour gave ticket buyers a close-up view of what makes them an international success — namely, a deep catalog of polished songs, a laser and light show that blows all audiences away and the infectious stage presence of founding member Anthony Gonzalez. If there's one word to describe M83's vibe, it's optimistic; and whether it's the band's exhilarating anthems or their danceable synth-based instrumentals, you'll definitely walk away feeling good. "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming" was their breakout, but seeing them live puts them over the top.

The band got its start in Antibes, France, with founding members Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau. After releasing two albums, 2001's self-titled debut and 2003's "Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts," to critical acclaim, Fromageau departed and left Gonzalez to pursue his singular vision. Gonzalez soon followed up with 2005's "Before the Dawn Heals Us" and 2008's "Saturdays=Youth" before culminating with "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming." Gonzalez has also contributed to several remix collections and a film soundtrack while attracting a steady stream of his own collaborators for M83. This band shows that "overnight success" is often years in the making, and now that they're in the limelight, they have the chops to back it up.

M83 was epic. One of the best Nights Ever

by VideoNerd712 on 9/18/09Wexner Center Performance Space - Columbus

I took my friend Taylor to the concert as a gift for her graduation and it was an incredible night. The band was awesome and very personable. The lead singer and the Venue Security got into a fist fight! One of the Best Concerts Ever

The French slap at the end topped it off!

by indierocker on 7/23/09Wexner Center Performance Space - Columbus

Very entertaining show. This was the first show I've been to that is primarily synth/electronic based, and I was curious as to how it would turn out.

    Great Venue and Great Concert

by AnnyBee on 7/22/09Wexner Center Performance Space - Columbus

I enjoyed every moment of this concert. The environment was more intimate than other concerts I've been to, due to the smaller space (making it feel even more special!). Anthony Gonzalez was quite the entertainer, taking his songs to a level I never even imagined. Instead of strictly playing the songs like on his albums, he developed them in a very unique and different way, yet still held on to them like his own. I actually liked the live versions even more than the album versions! GREAT CONCERT. One of my favorite concerts to date. My only regret was I was not able to dance onstage!

    Well worth the wait...

by pyseas on 7/20/09Glass House - Pomona

There are plenty of bands I would love to see, and MANY of them do not tour the U.S. very often, if ever. So when I heard M83 was playing the Glass House in Pomona, I jumped at the chance to go, especially considering it was at venue with ample parking and little in terms of freeway congestion. It's hard to find a decent venue when you live in between L.A. and San Diego, as most bands don't tour the areas between. The opening DJ (James Yuill), was a great showcase of an up and coming talent, as well as a stand alone show in itself. M83 was great as well, and performed hit songs that the crowd was expecting, unlike some more jaded talent *cough*radiohead*cough*....It was an awesome concert, now if only the Glass House's talent scout/scheduler could get more acts of their caliber.

Former synthesizer king brought the rock energy.

by AaronF on 7/20/09Wexner Center Performance Space - Columbus

I've enjoyed M83 on record since the release of shoegaze keyboard epic "Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts" in 2003, but this was my first opportunity to see the group live. Anthony Gonzalez is famous for crafting towering, surging songs filled with electronic textures and oversized emotion, all of which was realized live, as well as the pop/rock chops that he has honed with the release of his last album, 2008's "Saturdays = Youth." The show never dropped in energy, from the opening trio of laptop-based songs to the full band renderings of material from the two most recent albums. In fact, the only substantial complaint I would have about the show was the lack of any material from "Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts." However that complaint pales when all that was performed came to life with zeal and a truly musical sensitivity; for a band so skilled at building to heart-rending climaxes, Gonzalez sure does know how to add the smallest electronic flourish at just the right time. The show reached its peak during the encore performance of full-blown rave up track "Couleurs." Unfortunately, a confrontation between the Wexner Center stage crew and Gonzalez following a disagreement over fans climbing onto the stage did distract from the palpable, dancing energy of the finale, but I left the show feeling alive and energized over the heated atmosphere. For those 10 minutes (approximate), the energy and spontaneity of punk collided with the precision and animation of electro, and it was a very fine moment indeed.

M83 worth the price but could have been better

by M83Fan on 7/20/09Wexner Center Performance Space - Columbus

Really enjoyed the opening performance as well as M83. Venue lacked the environment needed for the type of music being performed. Seeing M83 live gave me a different lsitening perspective than when I have listened at home or on iPod. Really felt the energy of the music and fully appreciated the dancability of the music. Definitely worth seeing live.

    Unlease the drums

by ehill27 on 7/19/09Wexner Center Performance Space - Columbus

I thought the sound was poor. I could see the potential, but the levels were out of whack, particularly the percussion. The drummer was placed behind a sound wall, presumably for control, but the result was muffled percussions that completely took the edge out of most songs.

Excellent show with a memorable ending.

by CharlesBronson on 7/19/09Wexner Center Performance Space - Columbus

The show went very smoothly, and was very good until the ending. Gonzalez got into a confrontation with the Wexner center director, which made things rather tense for both the crowd and the staff. It seems that the staff should have told the band that the stage they were playing on could not hold the extra weight of crowd members before the show, but I also think Gonzalez should not have reacted as violently as he did.

    Eat sh*t, security guy

by Sneve on 7/19/09Wexner Center Performance Space - Columbus

The music was amazing, their sound definitely translates well to live performances. He really knows how to connect with the crowd, and after inviting people to dance on the stage with him, exchanged words and blows with the event security guy. Hilarious, entertaining, and definitely one of the best concerts I've been to, and I've seen alot.

    M83 was great at Mezzanine.

by DigitalCzech on 7/13/09Mezzanine - San Francisco

Mezzanine is a cool spot. It's in a crap neighborhood with some sketchy people. But the club itself is top notch and intimate enough to really enjoy live music. The sound system has to be one of the best in SF.

    M83 - Hot Show!

by carrioncrow on 7/13/09Mezzanine - San Francisco

I loved it. Diverse crowd as well as setlist. The venue seemed to be perfect for a show like this. Anthony Gonzalez is almost as dreamy and powerful as his music. I recommend m83 - the smaller the venue the better!

M83 is great. A must see at least once. Seen them several times over the last year or so and each experience has been different, but they never disappoint.
