Round Up by arrangement with Live Nation present

LUCINDA WILLIAMS

THURSDAY OCTOBER 8, 2015 – Round Up by arrangement with Live Nation is thrilled to announce one of America’s finest singer-songwriters, LUCINDA WILLIAMS will head to New Zealand for one show only, playing Auckland’s Vector Arena on Friday December 4.

It’s been three years since the immensely talented Lucinda Williams graced our shores and we’re honoured to welcome the three-time Grammy Award winner back to New Zealand for a one-off intimate performance. Renowned for marrying rock, blues, country and soul, Lucinda heads our way, with stellar band in tow; including Wallflowers guitarist Stuart Mathis and her irreplaceable rhythm section, David Sutton on bass and Butch Norton on drums.

Tickets for this one-off performance will go on sale at midday Monday, October 12.

My Live Nation and Southern Fork members can be among the first to secure tickets during the pre-sales commencing at midday tomorrow, Friday October 9.

For complete tour and ticketing details, visit: www.livenation.co.nz.

With a recording career spanning 12 albums and nearing four decades, Lucinda Williams is touring on the back of her brilliant 2014 double-album release, Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone, which was voted Album of the Year at the 14th Annual Americana Awards last month.

The album includes 20 new songs with all but two of the tracks written solely by 62-year-old Williams. From the very personal ‘Compassion’ penned by her poet father, Miller Williams and sung into being by Lucinda, to the closing, beautifully epic rendition of JJ Cale’s ‘Magnolia’; Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone is testament to Lucinda’s prowess.

Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone joins a distinguished discography including 1978 debut Ramblin’ on My Mind, 1988’s eponymous breakthrough, Lucinda Williams and 1998’s landmark Car Wheels On A Gravel Road.

  • Fantastic night of song, stories, and videos

by MarkF on 10/16/25The 5th Avenue Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

A wonderful night of song, story telling, and lo-fi film. Truly amazing to see and hear Lucinda revisit so much of her classic work, despite what she called her "temporary setback"which occurred 5 years ago. We felt privileged to be in the audience. It was a unique opportunity to meet Lucinda up close in a perfectly suited venue.

  • Good show!

by SB on 10/12/25The 5th Avenue Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

Lucinda Williams gave an astonishing performance. Her singing sounded very good, her stories were interesting and often funny, great retrospective of her career and engaging slideshow to tie it all together. She showed remarkable resilience, given her history of a stroke, playing over two hours straight with no break. It was a delight to see her looking and sounding so good. Overall, good experience.

  • Sound system was bad

by Sammy on 10/12/25The 5th Avenue Theatre - SeattleRating: 3 out of 5

Worst sound system at a concert ever. Great musicians but the sound was very bad. It is a shame. The theatre is so beautiful

  • Enjoyable

by LRW on 10/12/25The 5th Avenue Theatre - SeattleRating: 4 out of 5

The performance was very enjoyable. The band was exceptional. I did not realize Lucinda had a stroke a few years ago. She did a great job, however.

  • Getting her flowers right on time

by ECLamb on 11/23/24Lincoln Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This was a remarkable show, a wonderful retrospective of her fascinating career. It was the third time I've seen her on stage since her stroke, and while her recovery is not yet complete, she's figured out how to do what she does best. Her voice is as strong as ever, her backing band is fantastic, and the videos behind her reveal everything that's gone into making her the icon she is.

  • Lucinda led the audience on her life's musical journey

    by RocKloud9 on 11/22/24Lincoln Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

I knew of Lucinda's stroke in 2020 and her road to recovery, most recently culminating with the release of her new album and book in 2023, followed by her current tour. However, it was quite sobering to see her helped out on stage to her seat, looking rather fragile. And since I had a front row seat, it was quite evident. She thanked the audience and alluded to her health issues by saying that she was currently unable to play the guitar, but hoped to do so soon. Lucinda alternated between standing and sitting through her over 2 hour/19 song performance. Although her body may have looked fragile, and she required physical assistance periodically throughout the show, her singing voice was anything but fragile. It was strong and she sang mostly solo, with backup harmonies from her superb band. In retrospect, I would have liked to hear her play the guitar, but her "replacements"were fantastic and likely exceeded her capabilities in mastery of the guitar. Her long-standing band - Stuart Mathis on guitar, David Sutton on bass, and Butch Norton on drums, was supplemented with Doug Pettibone on guitar, harmonica and pedal steel guitar. They were tight and enhanced each and every song. Lucinda introduced her songs with a background story, giving it perspective and depth. In addition, there were old video clips on a screen behind the band that provided a visual image to the era she wrote and sang about. The song that stuck out the most for me was "Little Angel, Little Brother,"where Doug's guitar work was reminiscent of Peter Green's early Fleetwood Mac wizardry. For her encore, Lucinda told of her upcoming album "Lucinda Williams Sings The Beatles From Abbey Road"(to be released December 6, 2024) with a treat of George Harrison's classic "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."Mathis simply killed the original Clapton guitar solos. Following the original version, and Prince's 2004 Roll Hall of Fame version, this is a super-strong 3rd favorite version and top favorite version for me personally witnessing it performed live. Lucinda closed the show with a fan favorite "Joy", thanked the audience profusely and was assisted off the stage. There are only a couple of negatives that I can offer. 1) The audience was extremely tame, politely clapping after each song, but never really offering Lucinda and her band to feed off the crowd's energy, because there really wasn't any. For example, after simply scrumtrulescent solos (whether it be guitar, drums, bass, pedal steel, or an extended vocal note or harmony), there was no appreciative applause mid-song; and 2) although I completely understand it, because many entertainers rely on it, even those much younger and not having suffered a stroke, Lucinda used a teleprompter for most, if not all of her songs. Although her voice was hypnotizing, it was a distraction to notice her eyes on the teleprompter rather than on the audience, or simply closed in the moment. All in all, a wonderful show that had me wanting more, leaving with a greater respect for her accomplishments and relishing in the story behind each of the timeless songs she had written and/or covered.

  • Don’t miss this show

by David on 11/22/24Lincoln Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve heard Lucinda before but this show was great. She told her life story in music and pictures. Though she can’t play guitar now due to her stroke, her voice is as good as ever and her band is AMAZING.

  • Lucinda through the ages Rocks!

    by Lucy D on 11/22/24Lincoln Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Lucinda's voice, deep, resonant, shot through with a depth that reached into my soul and blew my heart wide open. The story telling, the videos, tracking her musical journey, all of it was such a gift.. And the band, oh my, vibrational ecstasy. They have always been amazing. Great venue, just the right size to hold her giant sound and still be able to see the stage comfortably. I love you, Lu!
