Louisville Cardinals Men's Basketball History

An excellent college basketball program across all eras, Louisville is notable especially for its continuity. Bernard "Peck" Hickman (1944-67) went 443-183 during his time in the ‘Ville; John Dromo (1967-71) went 68-23 during his brief run as coach, which ended when a heart attack forced him to retire; Denny Crum (1971-2001) went to six Final Fours, won two national championships and left campus with a shiny 675-295 record; Rick Pitino (2001-17) added another Final Four appearance while going 416-143 overall.

The Crum era in particular is regarded as one of the great coaching tenures in the history of the sport. After serving as the top assistant to the legendary John Wooden at UCLA, Crum took the Cardinals to the Final Four — the first coach to make a Final Four in his first season as a head coach. He earned the nickname "Cool Hand Luke" for his demeanor and "Mr. March" for all the deep postseason runs his teams produced over the years. His offenses were famous for their post play — "Never Nervous Pervis" Ellison was the rock of the Cardinals' second national championship team — and his defenses were a frenzy of switches. The style of play was perhaps ill-suited to the era of the three-pointer, but he was still winning games into the mid ‘90s, including a 26-9 season in 1996-97.

Currently, the team is led by coach Pat Kelsey.

Louisville Cardinals at KFC Yum! Center

Louisville’s KFC Yum! Center seats more than 22,000 fans, making it the second-largest college hoops arena in the country. The student section is known as The Ville'ns, and they keep the stadium lively. To juice their homecourt advantage, the Cardinals have made a habit of staging "color" events — "White Outs," "Red Outs" and "Black Outs" — during which fans are encouraged to wear the same color to games.

  • Pricing

by Bigke on 2/20/16KFC Yum! Center (University of Louisville) - LouisvilleRating: 4 out of 5

The $50 I paid for my seat was not worth the seat I do wonder stand I bought my ticket last minute and had to sit towards the top but it was definitely not worth $50 I also understand the game I attended was a big rival game Syracuse versus Louisville Still the price I paid wasn't worth the seat overall experience at the arena was great though

  • Customer service was poor, but the game was great.

by JuJuBee20 on 2/7/16KFC Yum! Center (University of Louisville) - LouisvilleRating: 3 out of 5

Seeing Louisville play was a fun experience, it was a Christmas gift for my mom so I wanted it to be the best. When we got into the arena and made our way to our section, we couldn't seem to find our correct seats because someone was sitting in them, but we wasn't for sure. We asked an usher for help, but they only made everything worse. We missed about 10 minutes of the game because no one wanted to assist us and told us that there was a tv that we could watch the game on. After walking around the same area for about a good 5 minutes, I had to ask two men if they were in the correct seats and come to find out, they were in our seats. It was an exhausting experience, but overall, as long as my mom was happy, I was ok with that. But the ushers were awful!! No help whatsoever and very unprofessional.

  • The Cards are always exciting!!

by Cards92 on 12/25/15KFC Yum! Center (University of Louisville) - LouisvilleRating: 5 out of 5

My husband is 92, I am 90 and we have been going to see my cardinals play for years. We always have a great time. The Yum Center and its employees are so nice. The center is truly a work of art. My only complaint is the handicapped seating is always full of non handicapped people. It is impossible to purchase seats in these sections. My husband and I are both in wheelchairs and would love to go to more games if we could get wheelchair accessible seats. It would be nice if Yum would save these seats for the people who truly need them.

  • Great Seats

by Paulrse12 on 10/6/15KFC Yum! Center (University of Louisville) - LouisvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Got more fun near the end when public address announcers suggested one side of arena root for red team, other side for white team. Great seats but oddly silent in building, some of it because no one quite knew how to root for against a team of Cardinals :)! — and some of it folks were just as interested in seeing how Rick Pittino was holding up, reacting to latest saga.

  • Everything was fine except the final score

by 123rtey123 on 3/7/15KFC Yum! Center (University of Louisville) - LouisvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Ticketing was fine, parking was fine, excellent staff, fine seats, cold beer, loud crowd, clean restrooms. We just the lost game. Because of the snow, we had lots of seat choices.

  • Great Experience!

by imanewhump on 3/7/15KFC Yum! Center (University of Louisville) - LouisvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Beautiful stadium. Love the sound system. They really know how to get the fans excited and riled up. My husband is a HUGE Louisville Cardinals fan and I surprised him with a trip to the game. They lost, but he loved the whole experience. There's a fan shop, a little museum with historical memorabilia. Plenty of snack bars and beer stands. Never encountered an out of control line. I would highly recommend going to see a game!

Chris Jones did save the day for UL in an exciting come from behind victory. Hopefully, he can bring his personal life up to his athletic ability soon.

Nice experience. Seats weren't the best...a bit cramped and too high up. Definitely would get tickets in the lower level next time.

  • PA system behind sections 210/211 way too loud!!!

by Boserock on 10/29/14KFC Yum! Center (University of Louisville) - LouisvilleRating: 3 out of 5

The speakers behind the 210-211 section are being blown out! You can't even talk without screaming at the bar nor can you understand what is being said. Please turn it down a little. It is trully out of control. Don't believe me? Go listen for yourself. Even the bar tenders agree!
