Louisville Cardinals Basketball History
An excellent college basketball program across all eras, Louisville is notable especially for its continuity. Bernard "Peck" Hickman (1944-67) went 443-183 during his time in the ‘Ville; John Dromo (1967-71) went 68-23 during his brief run as coach, which ended when a heart attack forced him to retire; Denny Crum (1971-2001) went to six Final Fours, won two national championships and left campus with a shiny 675-295 record; Rick Pitino (2001-17) added another national championship to the pile and two more Final Fours, going 416-143 overall.
The Crum era in particular is regarded as one of the great coaching tenures in the history of the sport. He was the top assistant to the legendary John Wooden at UCLA, and in his first year in Louisville he took the Cardinals to the Final Four — the first coach to make a Final Four in his first season as a head coach. He earned the nickname "Cool Hand Luke" for his demeanor and "Mr. March" for all the deep postseason runs his teams produced over the years. His offenses were famous for their post play — "Never Nervous" Pervis Ellison was the rock of the Cardinals' second national championship team — and his defenses were a frenzy of switches. The style of play was perhaps ill-suited to the era of the three-pointer, but he was still winning games into the mid ‘90s, including a 26-9 season in 1996-97.
Currently, the team is led by coach Kenny Payne.

It was a great view and the YUM Center is awesome. The food was a little bit much and it was servided cold. The waiters where very nice and welcoming.
Awesome facility, but there are kinks to work out. There are still issues with the escalators that required many people to take the stairs to the upper part of the venue. Not a problem for the able-bodied, but I'm sure it was an issue for many. The food and beverages are WAY over priced...why eat at the game when I can go to a nice restaurant and have table service for cheaper than I can feed my family at the arena? Also, even though the crowd was leaving at a trickle towards the end of the game, there was a long wait to use the escalator to exit the upper level. The design seems very poor for handling a large crowd exiting at once...nothing you can do about that now other than encouraging people to take the stairs that are located at other parts of the facility.
I was surprised they didn't have a grander introduction for the coach and players. I was expecting a production since this was the first time in the new arena but was disappointed. The arena is very cool so we enjoyed walking around and seeing everything but as far as the actual scrimmage, we were pretty bored.
We had awesome seats - U of L ROCKS! We are looking forward to a great season.
Being a Card's fan, I couildn't have enjoyed this event more. I got my tickets last minute on the day it sold out. I don't know how I got so lucky but I was at mid-court (116) 6 rows from the floor. Hearing Pitino bark at the players was funny. Best seats I ever had! The facility is great, concessions needed work (no forks or spoons). The arena is more than just an arena, very much like a museum in some respects. Go to any event at this arena!!!!!!!!!!
I was so great to see the new stadium and also to see our cards play. Pitno was so funny cracking jokes and cheering on his cards.
The Yum center was awesome, it is huge and kind of scary when you re up n row w. The men looked great I think we will have a great team this year. GO CARDS!!!
The event was awesome! The arena is absolutely fabulous! And the view from where we were sitting in the new arena was great! I was thrilled to see the amount of people who came out to cheer on the Louisville Cardinals.
First off....WOW what a venue. The KFC Yum Center is beautiful. If you are moving from a basketball monument arena, such as, Freedom Hall...it better be to a place like this. And it was even better with the Cards on the floor, Coach Pitino in warm-ups, Assistant Coaches taking the helm...well sort of! Lots of fun during the intros and breaks...with Coach P teasing the players about being tired and faking injuries to get out of the tough scrimmage. Great venue...Great team...Great coaches!!! GO CARDS!
WOW !! Thats about sums up the KFC Yum center Arena. And Thanks Ticketmaster we had GREAT SEATS to watch The "U of L Cardinal Red White Game".
