Louisville Cardinals Men's Basketball History

An excellent college basketball program across all eras, Louisville is notable especially for its continuity. Bernard "Peck" Hickman (1944-67) went 443-183 during his time in the ‘Ville; John Dromo (1967-71) went 68-23 during his brief run as coach, which ended when a heart attack forced him to retire; Denny Crum (1971-2001) went to six Final Fours, won two national championships and left campus with a shiny 675-295 record; Rick Pitino (2001-17) added another Final Four appearance while going 416-143 overall.

The Crum era in particular is regarded as one of the great coaching tenures in the history of the sport. After serving as the top assistant to the legendary John Wooden at UCLA, Crum took the Cardinals to the Final Four — the first coach to make a Final Four in his first season as a head coach. He earned the nickname "Cool Hand Luke" for his demeanor and "Mr. March" for all the deep postseason runs his teams produced over the years. His offenses were famous for their post play — "Never Nervous Pervis" Ellison was the rock of the Cardinals' second national championship team — and his defenses were a frenzy of switches. The style of play was perhaps ill-suited to the era of the three-pointer, but he was still winning games into the mid ‘90s, including a 26-9 season in 1996-97.

Currently, the team is led by coach Pat Kelsey.

Louisville Cardinals at KFC Yum! Center

Louisville’s KFC Yum! Center seats more than 22,000 fans, making it the second-largest college hoops arena in the country. The student section is known as The Ville'ns, and they keep the stadium lively. To juice their homecourt advantage, the Cardinals have made a habit of staging "color" events — "White Outs," "Red Outs" and "Black Outs" — during which fans are encouraged to wear the same color to games.

It was a great game. I wish there was more rooms between rows, the space is kind of tight. But great venue overall, staff were courteous and helpful. I will be visiting again in the future.

  • Underwhelming

Started off well, but then the pace went downhill and things became a bit boring. Overall it was very underwhelming.

  • It was nice.

The Louisville Live event was nice but there were a few things that could’ve been better. For one, there was way too much down time transitioning between events. There was a time before the scrimmage where everyone was just standing around. The transitions could’ve been faster. Also, the camera work needs improvement. They introduced the senators for the free throw contest and they weren’t on camera for anyone to see. Also, they introduced Darrell Griffith as a judge for the dunk the camera wasn’t even on the judges table so nobody really cheered. At one point Peyton Siva was shown on the half court screen but there was no mention of him that I heard. The needs to be better coordination between what’s being talked about in the mic and what’s being shown on camera.
