Cameron Mackintosh presents the acclaimed production of Boublil and Schönberg's Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon, Les Misérables. This brilliant staging has taken the world by storm and has been hailed as "a reborn dream of a production" (Daily Telegraph).
Set against the backdrop of 19th century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption-a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. The magnificent score of Les Misérables includes the songs "I Dreamed a Dream," "On My Own," "Bring Him Home," "One Day More" and many more.
What a great passionate experience, the cast and crew were phenomenal
We attended opening night to a sold-out theater, and it was nothing short of spectacular.
This was the fifth or sixth time I have seen Les Mis. The show itself is beyond compare. But productions vary in both small and large ways. Unfortunately, this was not among the best. The actor who played Jean Valjean seemed ill fitted for the role. He had neither the booming voice nor the stage presence needed for the main character; it seemed some of the other standout characters (inkeeper, Marius) bonded more strongly with the audience. In terms of the production, the stage was small and seemed cramped. The scene of “empty chairs at empty tables” took place, not at a bar with actual chairs and tables, but at the site of the barricade, which greatly reduced its emotional impact. Otherwise, the cast was fine and I thoroughly enjoyed the show.
We have seen Les Miserables 3 times now. This show was spectacular! The singing was amazing, the sets were so realistic and added so much to the show. I loved every minutes.
Riveting, emotional, touching…. Beautifully executed
The cast was fantastic. I’ve seen this play seven times and despite the amazing cast this was the worst performance I’ve seen. The lighting was particularly dark and dingy and the sound during the dialogue scenes was incredibly hard to hear. It was great during the main songs. But if I didn’t know the play so well I never would have been able to distinguish what they were saying during the dialogue. And even then I couldn’t distinguish over half of it.
The cast is truly unbelievable. Every actor is amazing and the ensemble sounds like a 200 person choir.
This was the fourth time for my wife, second for me, and the first for our sons. It has been some years since I'd seen the last production, but I feel as though this production brought about some updated humor, improvisation, and newness to the musical. The orchestra was well rehearsed and the solos were impressive. Even the set design was better placed and flowed with each scene. The only real critique we have is for the venue. Gammage Auditorium is in desperate need of a makeover. The entirety of Tempe has grown and modernized, but Gammage is a relic that just does not fit the ambiance.
Saw Les Miserables for my first time ever with my teenage daughter and it was so incredibly amazing we went back the next night with her twin brother! (Wish the audio was a bit better at the theater, as it was hard to hear a lot of the lyrics.) Can't stop listening to the soundtrack online (just wish it were of the actual performers we saw in 2023 who were just beyond amazing)! Thank you Les Miserables Touring Group and Pantages for a truly remarkable, amazing, unforgettable 2-night experience for me and my twins!
Hands down, this was the best cast that I have seen of Les Miserables in the 4 times that I have seen the musical. Virtually all casted parts had fantastic chemistry and the venue was delightful in San Diego. Overall a wonderful experience and performance. Thank you!
I've seen Le Mix probably a total of at least eight times. The most recent was in May in London. I love Le Miz. I gifted my son a ticket to the San Jose Le Mix Performance, hoping to introduce him to the love of theatre choosing this show in particular because I thought it would appeal to him. Actors spoke and sung the words so fast, even I hard a hard time following and understanding the words. If I hadn't known the story line, I never would have gotten it. As a dancer, I am critical of some of the choreography. The repeated position of the characters being on the floor in the beginning was way over used.
Unfortunately we were unable to attend due to the fact we had a car accident 30 minutes away from the theater. My car is totaled and my 88-year old mom is having trouble getting a deep breath. We were extremely lucky we survived. We hope to be able to travel again to see the future shows down the road.
The show was terrific, but the stage was too low to watch from the 2nd floor. Needed to lean forward to watch it. It was not a comfortable position to keep for 3 hours.
I love this theater, I wish I lived closer. I drove 2 hours to see this rather than go to SF. The production of Les Mis was as good as I've ever seen it & I've seen it many times! Seating is great, although, they are long rows so you will be scooting past many knees if you are sitting in the middle and you are not the first to get there. Speaking of that, we were late because it took a ridiculous amount of time to get through the lights once off the freeway & then again to get into the closest parking structure. There was only one attendant so make an extra, at least, 20 min time allotment for that! There were soooo many people waiting to go rush in during the first act break, the usher said it had been like that all week so we were far from the only ones. The ushers were so patient despite all the people frustrated with missing the beginning....KUDOS TO THE USHERS!!! Despite that it was a wonderful evening & I will continue to make the trip in the future!
Les Mis is one of my favorite productions and I've seen it several times. This time did not disappoint! The performers are beyond talented, with a few standouts that shone above the rest (Javert, Marius, the Bishop, Thenardier and Madame Thenardier, Fantine, and Eponine). However, there were a few drawbacks, though I'm not sure they should count against the production so much as the theater hosting the performance. Namely, the sound on some of the performers was really poor and it made it incredibly difficult to understand them (ex: Jean Valjean...kinda key to the performance. His enunciation needs some work but the sound quality just wasn't up to expectations either.). Adult Cosette had a great voice but it just didn't feel right for the role so that detracted from the show a bit. I know musical theater is largely about big voices, projection, reaching the last row of the audience, etc., and Eponine had an absolutely amazing voice, but belting out Little Fall of Rain just kind of ruined the softness and vulnerability of the moment. I mean, she's dying in the arms of the man she loves so the song just doesn't require force or a big presence. Those drawbacks aside, the show was really fantastic and reminded me of why Les Mis is one of my all-time favorites. I would happily go again and would recommend without hesitation.
It is by far my favorite musical performance so far. Amazing experience. Moved to tears multiple times. I've watched the movie before, and actually watched the movie again after the musical, I think the movie does a better job of providing all the details in the story, but the performances were much stronger in the musical. The San Jose venue is a bit too large for the optimal sound, but oh well...The orchestra seats were perfect too.
Les Miserables is one of the best musicals ever. What else can I say? And this touring company was terrific!
We have seen Les Miserables several times and this troupe stands among the best. Wonderful choreography and set design created a realistic setting for the amazing songs of the show. Jean Valjean, Inspector Javert, Bishop Myriel, Thenardier, Fantine and Eponine were standout performers among an exceptional cast. At some point during this production, one will forget they are watching a musical and you will join the revolution. This production of Les Miserables delivers!
I brought my husband and 18 year old son. We all really enjoyed it. The talent was inspiring - solos were beautiful and harmony powerful. Music excellent. Sound, lighting and stage production well done. I would go again in a heartbeat.
All the vocal parts of the performers were marred by noticeable poor-quality sound interference, and the subtitles in the subtitle field were so small they were almost illegible. A very tall person sat in the front row, obstructing the view. Aside from that, the staff were very enthusiastic, the on-site atmosphere was great, and there was intense applause and cheering after each performance.
