Everyone who loves a great musical performed by utterly professional and talented singers should go and see this production. This 25th Anniversary production does the original proud!!!! Saw that too in Chicago many many years ago at the Auditorium. Bravo good job to all in the cast!!!!!

  • Les Mis was better 4th time around!

This is the fourth time I have seen Les Mis and loved it even more. I especially liked the special effects like when Javert jumped into the river! The singing was flawless and mesmerizing.

  • The "new" Les Miserables was amazing

    by MatthewJason74 on 2/11/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

We had FRONT row seats to Les Miserables in Chicago... I have seen the show many years ago and this "new" version was amazing. I was afraid what would happen with all the new changes but I was surprised at how great it was, sure it lacked the revolving stage and the "making of the barricade" but the set they did have was fantastick!!!! I was so impressed with all of it! It sure isn't the old black, white and gray show it once was... I have to say that there were some things left to be desired (the old music was so wonderful, I am not sure why they had to "hurry" the music along...and speed up the songs)...but everything else was on point! And again, we had FRONT ROW seats... :)

  • Total Surprise

by stets on 2/11/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Les Mis, I'm not sure how many times now...many years ago in Chicago, NYC, once in Miami and another time in San Francisco, and most recently in London's West End. Going to see this traveling company, I thought what the hell, reluctantly, I'd travel in to the Cadillac theater thinking, even though I learned there would be no rotating stage, the orchestration would be different than the original, as well as the staging, I'd give it a shot because I loved the story and the music so well. I was convinced before I got to the Cadillac, that I'd probably be disappointed because of those advertised changes from the original. What a shocking surprise I received. Those of you in Chicago, if you get the opportunity, go see this version [this "touring company"], while you still have the chance. It is a magnificent presentation, every bit as good if not better than the original. The cast is made up of powerful voices, the staging is so totally different than the original that I would have had to take notes to remember all the differences which make this production so unique. The innovative lighting, the battle at the barricades, Javert's suicide scene, Valjean's rescue of Marius through the under belly of Paris all in all were so imaginative and unique, along with other staging differences, makes this production so different than anything I can remember, honestly, I thought I was seeing Les Miserables for the very first time. For you Les Mis lovers, trust me, you will walk away from this production as spell bound as I was. For those of you never having seen this superb musical, go see it now. It's been playing around this country for a quarter of a century. That has to say something about its longevity and popularity. I would see this version again at the Cadillac Theater in a heart beat.

  • Les Mis still such an inspiration 25 years later.

    by ABmom3 on 2/11/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Saw this 25 years ago on Broadway with the original cast. This 25th anniversary production was stunning. Lawrence Clayton as Jean Valjean was absolutely amazing - his performance was moving, passionate and beautiful. Loved, loved, loved it!!

Very good performers. Music over voice just a little loud. Diction (as compared with NYC shows) could have been a little better. If I had not seen other performances, I would not have known there have been slightly better renditions.

  • I would go again!!!

Whole family loved it! What a great production. The performances, the scenery, everything together created a fantastic experience.

  • A classic that always pleases

The music was as thrilling as ever. I wish the vocals were slowed down slightly to achieve the optimal emotional impact.

  • Les Miserable Chicago

    by Shelley17 on 2/11/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

My first time seeing Les Miserable. I have been to many many other Broadway productions, just love theater. Was pleasantly surprised by Les Mis. Not as upbeat as The Lion King, but as entertaining as Phantom or Rent.

  • Les Mis - Chicago - 25th Anniversary production

by ElizabethJZ on 2/11/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 1 out of 5

Les Mis has been my favorite Broadway show since I first saw it. This production does the original a grave disservice -- Jean Val Jean was not strong; Fantine was forcing her voice; vibratto was unnecessarily added in several place; the notes were all shortened instead of extended; Master of the House became a much crasser number - and not as witty and funny as original; Javert was fabulous as was Eponine. Gavrosh's song was removed; the sets were lovely, and the use of Victor Hugo's artwork was well done. However, the flow was extraordinarily difficult for first time Les Mis goers to follow, the intelligibility was lacking, the difference in the appearance of the young and adult Cossette and Eponine made it hard for those not familiar with the story to follow. The orchestra was wonderful, and Cossette was good.

  • Les Miserables, always a pleasure

by Bermoji on 2/11/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

It is the third time that I watch Les Miserables. The first two times in Europe (a spanish company and a british company). Every time has been different but still very exciting. I recommend it to everybody without reservations.

  • Worth the trip

by LesMizfan on 2/11/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Overall, a well done performance - especially strong in the ensemble. In general, male roles were stronger except for Fantine who was the strongest in the female roles. Enjolas was marvelous.

  • Solid performance

Overall I thought the production was solid. The vocal was weak in some parts.

First time to see Les Miserables and we were definitely not disappointed. Could have skipped the suite upgrade, although having a private place to hang our coats and being able to take drinks to our seats was a big plus.

  • Les Miserables

by MJdds on 2/9/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

A slightly new interpretation of a classic was thoroughly enjoyable! New set design incorporating actual art work by the author, Victor Hugo, created an atmosphere new to the play. Three dimensional backdrops added the appearance of depth and movement to many scenes. With a few exceptions, performances are very strong which you would expect from a touring company. We had a substitute performer, Ron Sharpe, in the role of ValJean who was absolutely spectacular!

  • Les Miserables was definitely not miserable!

by JulieLB on 2/9/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

We bought tickets to see Les Miserables for my parents' birthdays - yes, they are difficult to buy for - and it was a hit! They have seen the show three times in other locations and both said it was the best production, by far.

  • Les Miz does not disappoint!!

by lovethismusic on 2/9/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This was the 4th time that I have seen a production of Les Miserables. This was my favorite of the performances. I saw the show twice in the 1980's at the Auditorium in Chicago, and about ten years ago I saw a high school performance of the show. Each time was really good. I love the music. This particular show was especially well staged, as well as, extremely well acted. As far as I am concerned, a must see!

  • Les Miserables was Miserable

    by pwsevo8 on 2/9/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

It was hard to hear the story line. It wasn't so obvious who the characters were growing up. The little girl from the orphanage who later grew up somehow went from a white girl to a black woman. That didn't make any sense. Although she played the role very well, it was difficult to figure out.

The story, of course, is timeless. There is almost no way to fail with such great subject matter and 25 years of proven audience appeal for the show. I saw the original production in Chicago twice when it was here the first time and have since listened to the Broadway Cast album countless times. I think the album more than anything has spoiled my recollection of how the singers should sound. For sure Eponine did not project the volume, spirit or emotion I expected. On the album, "On My Own" is my favorite song but the current production has none of the energy of that presentation. Also, the Thénardiers were disappointing as when I saw the show before, they brought the house down. Others in the line for the car after the show also commented on this. However, I thought that perhaps toning down their performance was on purpose to give more weight to the main characters. Also, in the book, the Thénardiers are really, really evil people and the joyous tone of Master of the House doesn't fit with the Victor Hugo characters. While I'm on the book, the opening scene was changed from a chain gang to a boat scene perhaps in homage to the book where one off Valjean's prison escapes involves diving off the mast of a ship. Also, during the battle at the barricade, I noticed that Valjean takes a shot aimed way up high and to the side of the stage. This was most definitely staged from the book where he took out a sniper that was shooting at the students with a single shot. I would guess that there are many more book references if one would see the performance enough times to catch them. While the rotating stage which was very cool in the original production is gone, the new scenery and effects were done just as well in my mind. Overall I still enjoyed it and am actually going to see it again next weekend with the family.
