About

Les Misérables on Tour

Theater producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh created his — dare we say it? — revolutionary new production of Les Misérables to commemorate the 25th anniversary of composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyricist Alain Boublil's musical, a rousing sung-through story of the Paris underclass' failed 1832 rebellion. After being seen around the world, Mackintosh's brisk new version opened in 2019 in the lavishly refurbished Sondheim Theatre (formerly Queen's Theatre) in London, thereby extending Les Mis' record as the West End's longest-running musical.

Mackintosh notably replaced the original production's famous revolving stage with a stream of projections derived from original drawings by Victor Hugo, upon whose 1862 novel Les Misérables is based. The current production stars Jon Robyns as Valjean, the tortured petty criminal whose pursuit by the steely and serpentine Javert (Bradley Jaden) drives the show. As the tragic Fantine, Carrie Hope Fletcher sings the show-stopping ballad "I Dreamed a Dream," and Shan Ako plays the equally ill-fated Eponine, who delivers the heartbreaking "On My Own." Surging ensemble numbers have been leaving audiences tingling.

About Les Misérables

The idea for a musical based on Victor Hugo's novel came to Alain Boublil during a performance of Oliver!, another show famously set among the proletariat. The concept album he recorded with composer Schönberg led to its first French stage version in 1980. Cameron Mackintosh's first English-language production opened in London in 1985, and Les Mis migrated to Broadway two years later. It has since been seen by more than 120 million people in 52 countries and 22 languages.

Set in the gritty streets of Paris during an explosive period of French history, Les Misérables conveys the poverty, danger and degradation of lower-class existence through magnificent songs such as "I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home," "One Day More" and "Master of the House." And the new production, according to The Guardian's Miriam Gillinson, could not be more contemporary, arriving as it does "at a time when all of us — in our own way — are hoping for a brighter tomorrow."

    Pretty Good

by Kate on 1/7/19Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

This show is all about the music. The orchestra was fabulous! The singers were great, but there seemed to be something wrong with the sound. Either the singers weren't enunciating or the sound was not "clean". The lighting was muddy. The costumes were hurt by the lighting. In the wedding I couldn't enjoy all the colors because the lighting was so poor. But the show is a feast for the ears and I enjoyed it very much.

    Amazing!!!

by Reina on 1/6/19Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

I love Les Miz and this show did not disappoint in anyway. Nick cartell (Jean valjean) was equal to the great Colm Wilkinson and the rest of the cast (particularly gavroche, cosette, Marius and javert) were just as good.

    Knoxvillw Tour 1-2-19

by June 2019 on 1/6/19Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

Saw the touring Les Miserables at the Tennessee Theater in Knoxville TN on 1-2-19. This was the opening night of the tour in Knoxville. The theater staff are very friendly. The theater itself is a typical theater of its age, with the main level and one balcony level. Beautiful and ornate building with narrow red cloth seats with hardwood armrests. Parking is public pay parking on street, pay lots, or garage. I gave this performance a 4(and not a 5) only because I found the stage very dark and hard to see performers. There were sound issues also. Could not understand words of any group songs. Some microphones were louder than others. The music itself was beautiful and the performances I could understand were beautiful. I wasn't the only one having problems hearing, several I spoke with complained of the same problem. I have seen other performances in this theater with no lighting or sound issues, so I believe this was an issue with this particular tour lighting and sound. Some theater goers did lack courtesy by coming and going during performance. That is an issue the theater should deal with by not allowing people to come back in the theater during an active scene.

    Les mis is incredible

by Teater on 10/24/18North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

Fabulous production, not to be missed. Great sound and environment. My only issue with the performing arts center is the lack of a center aisle - you have to climb over a lot of people to get to the middle. Otherwise great venue.
